Great video friend! I agree - the lagom mini is an incredible little package. Very hard to beat for this price and I enjoyed it more than I originally thought I would. It’s interesting - I’ve yet to face any stalling but I have heard and seen from a few that this is an issue since posting my review. I’ll be keeping my eye on this with mine.
Kyle, based on your reviews this was high on my list! I'm upgrading from a $60 conical burr grinder and I want a budget friendly option that can "do it all" from drip coffee, to V60, to espresso. Because I use 60-65 grams every morning through my Technivorm Moccamaster I needed something that could conveniently handle the larger amounts :-( Otherwise this was #1 on my list.
Just found your channel yesterday and you have quickly become one of my favorite channels for coffee! Appreciate the longer format videos because they are detailed but not boring. Your random banter in between explanations are hilarious. Looking forward to future videos. Cheers!
the lagom mini is basically perfect for what I need because I already have a decent grinder to handle filter coffee, and I just got a Flair to pull espresso for myself at home which means I'm probably only making 1 or 2 shots a day. plus I live in a tiny studio, so gimme that small footprint. great vid
I’m a real one! Just some feedback Lance, I personally like to see grinder reviews where the full process of putting the beans into the grinder, grinding the beans and pulling a shot is shown in real time. That way we get to see things like the work flow, speed/noise of the grinder, how the grinds look + how you deal with emptying the grinds into a portafilter.
It's as simple as dumping the beans in the hopper, grinder into the catch, and dumping them in the portafilter. Lol nothing special. Since it is anodized, it is super slick and the grounds don't stick. The video was long do I cut things I didn't think were of utmost importance. I did show how grinding can be a pain with the low power motor and how to slow feed. Only thing I guess I didn't show was dumping the grounds jnto the PF. It was as simple as that- dumping them in. Lol
@@LanceHedrick thank YOU. In the forums I'm seeing people having more issues and it looks like option O is researching whether or not regional outlet power affects the functionality of the motor and they're discussing whether or not they're going to increase the limited 80w available power from the motor which I guess is actually rated at 120w. Thank you Max! So glad you enjoyed the video. I think you would be happy with this as long as you don't grind too much espresso. The motor is a bit too weak imo. But I bet they will crank it up following this, hopefully.

@@LanceHedrick That's really interesting! Would that be something that can be done aftermarket? I wonder why they chose to limit the motor to 85 though. Perhaps for longevity or noise reasons?
Glad to see more questions answered I have had after people mentioning stalling and noise. Looking forward to more info as time passes (Eg: new car long-term use testing). I suspect they're underrating the motor for longevity, but if they have room up to 120w then I'd prefer they run it around 100 instead of 85 since lighter roasts appear to be giving it more issue. If it comes down to DC voltage out being less than needed I can whip up a lab bench supply with bits off eBay for cheap enough in the case they don't beef up the supply some. this thing seems perfect for me. i only ever make at most two cups of coffee per day, and i’m okay to slowly pour beans into the grinder instead of all at once. i also really love the design, it looks like if apple made a coffee grinder. though i do wish that it had stall detection similar to the fellow ode, that’s still not at all a dealbreaker for me. one thing that could be a problem though is that enormous external power supply.
Good video as usual. The only thing i always like to see is first just using the grinder as designed out the box and show the workflow before the taking apart and tasting etc.
@@LanceHedrick I mean let's us see the grinder and how it works not just the results. Is it easy to load beans into it? Is it loud? Easy to pack and carry?
I show at the end the sound of it with beans going thru it. Perhaps you didn't finish the video? And I show the bean hopper. It's pretty straight forward. Take off the magnetic lid and dump beans in, as I show in the video.
Interesting product. I've been contemplating assembling a travel espresso kit with a flair and a hand grinder. This tiny little guy is an interesting alternative! I'll have to think about this a little more...
It is only 25 mins video but I am sure you use a lot hours to make this. Thank you for your sincerely shot during C40 and Option-O . That mean it perform quite equal taste with the same price range. Appreciate your effort , good job 👍🏻
I want to be showered with love! but in all seriousness, great review! Someone else already asked about this in the comments, but I suppose the more interest, the better - just curious about your thoughts on the moonshine burrs (if you have any)?
Please do a video ranking all your recommendations based on price, akira Koki with ssp, Ode with the ssp/gorilla gear, df64 w/ssp, vario + with steel burs, Lagom mini. I feel like you recommended most of those so does Lagom mini take top spot over Akira koki and ode w/gorilla gear ? For filter coffee
True! I did recommend them all! But for what they offer. They're all in different price ranges and target cup profiles. Best filter- Ode with ssp or gorilla Best FLAT all around- Either Akira ssp (filter first, espresso second) or urbanic with gevi (espresso first, filter second) Best CONICAL- Lagom mini I have yet to make df64 ssp video but that would be in the price range of vario!
Can you make a video about conical burrs vs. flat burrs? That would be really helpful as I am getting an electric grinder soon and I’m still wondering which is best for me. I’ve watched many vids on the particular grinders but a video specifically on that would be even better!
Best choice is to go to your local espresso gear store and taste test there. Both are awesome. Both have their own flaws. I prefer conical. But from a really good really expensive flat burr ... You just can't beat espresso from that. Lol.
For sure! Boiled down, conicals will tend to give more traditional profiles (think chocolate, big body, etc) whereas flats tend to showcase clarity. Both incredible, just different aims!
Great video lance, Just an update. It seems the motor on the Mini is actually capable of drawing more current and is at present limited by the current supplied by the adapter. So the next batch comes with a 5A adapter which will remove stalling issue. Current users also can ask for a new adapter. It will only take a bit more time since it's the Chinese new year right now.
Love the video, but I don´t really get what people mean by saying it can only grind beans for 2-3 or like Kyle Rowsell said 7 espressos per day. Where does this number come from? What happens if I grind more. Do I damage the grinder? Or is the ground coffee just not as good as the first few?
You will shorten the life span of the motor. Idk where Kyle got seven. 2-3 is the number from option o themselves. They have rated the number at a certain longevity. If you run it on espresso, the torque will have negative consequences on the motor in the long run
@@LanceHedrick Tjanks for the answer, good to know. It´s actually the only thing that keeps me from buying it instantly (and the fact that it´s sold out), as I sometimes make espresso for firends and family, which then would be like 8 shots. I guess if it actually comes to the point where the motor dies, hopefully you can replace it. Kyle actually said 8 shots, I misheard that.
I don't know where he got 8 haha! 2-3 is the number. If you do 8 or even 12 in a single day, it isn't bad. Just don't make it a habit. The idea is if you make espresso daily, don't do more than 2.
Thanks for the great video! Have you had a chance to test the new moonshine burrs? I prefer clarity in pour over but more body and sweetness in the espresso which i think might be lacking a bit in the wilfa uniform that I'm currently using. Ordered this grinder with stock burrs based off of your review, but would you actually recommend the moonshine burrs instead?
Great video 👏🏻👏🏻 You’re as mad as a bag of badgers 😂 video idea, the next grinder for a BBE owner to develop taste. Better conical or go flat. On the lines of what Brian Quan has been doing but for a BBE owner 👍🏼🇮🇪 #realone
Can someone explain the 2-3 shots per day limit? I imagine something to do with overheating the motor, but per day seems like an excessive limitation? I would more easily understand like 2-3 shots per hour or something. How long does the motor need to be rested between shots??
Not about the motor needing resting. It ha about the lifespan and Rating of the motor. You will get similar longevity as they rated it if consistently doing 2-3. More than that will shorten the life by a lot
Great video Lance. how do you think this compares to a Sette 270 or Eureka Mignon Facile for mainly espresso (2-4 doses per day). All within $25 of each other?
Thanks for the link to the bellows! I’ve seen a few Asian reviews where they’re using a black cylindrical bellows but no idea if they’re of the shelf or 3d printed.
I have the Remi which has the 38mm burrs and it grinds the best espresso and pour overs out of all the grinders I have. I prefer it over my old EK43S and my Sette.
Another great video But I am curious about the “two shots per day “ limit On option O Is that really two per day? Or can I do another two after a half hour? Or an hour?
Huge fan! I’ve watching hours of your videos since getting my first machine, pour over, and now upgrading to the ascaso duo and now want to step up from my hand grinder. I was looking at the new opus and encore but I’d like a little better build quality/aesthetics without spending to much. So it’s kinda come down to this or the varia vs3. Do you have an opinion on what I should go with or was there another option that I should consider?
Lance, thanks for the amazing content as usual! I’m very interested in this grinder, but I’m worried by comments like, “this grinder can only do 2-3 shots a day safely.” What is that based on? I think Kyle recommended not buying the Mini if you plan on pulling more than 8 shots a day. Is there concern that the motor will burn up? If so, can I really even feel safe pulling a couple shots a day with the Mini? Thanks!
Honestly just from a physics perspective the biggest thing is heat. What I take this to mean is you should let the grinder cool down (couple of hours) after pulling 2-3 espresso shots. But my gut feeling is that is a conservative number, but I would agree with Kyle’s rule of thumb that 8+ shot get something with a beefier motor
Great video Lance. I'm a real one! I saw Kyle Roswell's vid on it and this is just confirming it's a real contender grinder at this price point. I'm looking into budget espresso grinders, how do you think this compares to a Sette 270 or Eureka Mignon Facile. All within $25 of each other?
Thanks for the deep testing and review as always Lance! If you do find a slow feeder mod please do share! Is the black finish easily nicked? What is the colour underneath the black finish? I'm gonna get one to accompany my C40 to use specifically for espresso on my Cafelat Robot.
@@mike216514 Thanks! I guess getting the silver one will mean less obvious dings and scratches will appear. The anodized black version is going to be more prone. Thanks for your help!
Good video, I have a mini 48mm burrs, and your review is accurate IMO. Big thanks for link to bellows! I only use mini for pour over brews, & I my Niche for espresso. My son is the daily espresso drinker and he uses a Lagom P64. I also have Comandante C40 when I get the urge to be manual, and for reference check purposes. Lately tried Cometeer nitrogen frozen coffee and it is surprisingly good IMO.
Yeah the cometeer peeps were just in town visiting! Lovely folks. They will be using onyx (where i work) starting soon! Thanks for watching. And tho the bellows are ugly, they're the best I've found.
I have been seeing this grinder popping up on the yub-tubs, I quite like it with one caveat that keeps me away. I want a more powerful motor on that little dude, even if it makes him not so little. I also feel like there is room for a 500ish option from option. You get my drift! there 2,500 dollar one is spiffy, but for the price I would need it to launch surveillance drones to guard itself while I am at work.
Was totally stoked to receive my Mini yesterday, but I believe I received a faulty unit. As soon as I plugged it in and turned it on, the motor sounded like it was trying to climb a hill to its desired RPM and just couldn’t (without beans present, and far from the lock point of the burrs). Then it choked trying to grind medium beans at a coarse grind setting. Something is obviously wrong with the motor or power supply or something. I’ll check back in with an update on the quality of Option-O customer service.
Option-O already responded to my email (in under 8 hours), confirmed that the behavior I was describing (and the sound recording I sent them) is not the intended function of the grinder, and have offered to ship a replacement. Excellent customer service experience so far.
@@bruceywayne9254 I 3d-printed a funnel to sit on top of the Mini that allows me to slow-feed beans when grinding for espresso and prevents popcorning out of the hopper. It’s tremendous, and there’s zero stalling when slow-feeding beans.
What do you mean by the Lagom Mini can "only do 2-3 cups per day safely"? In a 24 hr period, it can only handle grinding 40-60g of beans? Or that you'd need to let it rest a while and cool down between uses?
I'm a real one! Great video! I'm gonna stick to my hand grinder for now. Do you like Yemen coffee? Watched a show on tv that was raving about Yemen coffee so was curious about your thoughts. I have a light roast of Yemen coffee waiting for me to finish my Sunergos blend.
Sunergos are good people! Louisville. It's been a while! And Yemen coffee is fine. Not really a huge fan. It is difficult to get because how war torn their country has been in recent years, so that drives up the cost and demand and can give it hype. But let me know your thoughts! Might be right up your alley!
I just wanted to add I’ve recently got mind, and it’s handled everything I’ve thrown at it so far. I’ve used light beans, but only a couple different kinds. Real test will be with more varieties. So far it hasn’t even got close to stalling.
nice! mine stalls a ton with lighter coffees at espresso fineness. are you in the USA? Apparently it seems to be a much bigger trend here with the power limitations than elsewhere.
Depends. Does it take you loads of shots to dial in everyday? The issue with the mini is the motor is small so excessive reliance on ot for espresso isn't ideal
@@LanceHedrick I'm still pretty new to espresso in general, so I might. I've got it my choice of electric pretty much narrowed down to the niche and mini and I'm mostly looking for input.
Hi Lance, would you be able to tell me where you got the white bellows from? I have a Niche Zero and looking for something after market that would fit! Great video! Thanks!
I was looking for an espresso grinder. I was really considering the Option O, the design is amazing and compact. What stopped me is that they don’t advice it if you make more than 3 espressos per day. Even though I rarely make that amount of coffee, I was more concerned with the durability over time if you use it only for espresso. In the end, I opted for the Niche even though it costs almost twice
I’d have given the Mini a chance. I’d be curious on the actually longevity of 2 Minis (one after the other) compared with Niche (given that the Niche is twice as expensive).
Option-O recently updated their product page and replaced the "2-3 espressos per day" language and instead mention the upgraded burrs could be used for espresso "home grinding duty, not commercial." I wonder if the change is due to more optimism around espresso grinding or if it's purely marketing change.

this thing seems perfect for me. i only ever make at most two cups of coffee per day, and i’m okay to slowly pour beans into the grinder instead of all at once. i also really love the design, it looks like if apple made a coffee grinder. though i do wish that it had stall detection similar to the fellow ode, that’s still not at all a dealbreaker for me. one thing that could be a problem though is that enormous external power supply.
Good video as usual. The only thing i always like to see is first just using the grinder as designed out the box and show the workflow before the taking apart and tasting etc.
I haven't done any mods to this grinder. It is directly out of the box! Used it stock for the video!
Pack and carry really depends on if you're willing to bring a power block with you
Looks like a great little grinder.
Ima Reel Wan. Nice to meet you Lance.
Interesting product. I've been contemplating assembling a travel espresso kit with a flair and a hand grinder. This tiny little guy is an interesting alternative! I'll have to think about this a little more...
The Lagom is great but not light, almost 4 pounds
It is only 25 mins video but I am sure you use a lot hours to make this.
Thank you for your sincerely shot during C40 and Option-O . That mean it perform quite equal taste with the same price range.
Appreciate your effort , good job 👍🏻
Thank you! And yes. Many hours were spent tasting for this lol
I don't see an option for smaller burrs on the preorder website, I wonder if they just decided it wasn't worth it any more?
I own this grinder and love it. The issues with the high pitched sound and stalling have been resolved by Option-O at this point.
They have not. They sent me a newer edition and the same issues persisted, sadly.
@@LanceHedrick I don't grind for espresso but haven't had any straining or issues with the motor noise with grinding for pour over.
I havent seen this video yet.. but I hope you say that its better than the niche.. so that the niche can be finally IN STOCK for me to buy
As per usual.. not dissapointed. and.. thank you.. now I can probably get my hands on the niche since the demand will surely shift to the O haha
Haha! We will see! The workflow on the niche is insanely good. Arguably favorite workflow out there tbh
I want to be showered with love!
but in all seriousness, great review!
Someone else already asked about this in the comments, but I suppose the more interest, the better - just curious about your thoughts on the moonshine burrs (if you have any)?
Looks like a great option for a travel grinder. Cool compact design. Very minimal while still being very functional.
This is exactly why I bought it. Been using it for pour-over and french press at home too.
Yeah! Beautiful, sturdy, and produces delicious brews
It’s been tough getting people the believe that great coffee should be paired with a great grinder. Cheers all around.
Correct! People want to shell out on, say, the espresso machine but not the grinder. Odd!
I am a real one ;) thanks, good video! I really am thinking about buying this and this video was a massive help!
Wish you could get this easily in the uk 😢
Same problem here in the Philippines. I just settled for a copycat (Mischief Mini) so far I think it matches the capabilities of the Lagom Mini 😁
I had to wait 3 months for it to be delivered to UK from Canada, when it was finally available. Worth it tho!
Budget? With burr upgrade you need for espresso it costs almost same as DF64!
Guess it depends on where you are in the world. Also, this vs df64 with standard burrs? I prefer this.
Best filter-
Ode with ssp or gorilla
Best FLAT all around-
Either Akira ssp (filter first, espresso second) or urbanic with gevi (espresso first, filter second)
Best CONICAL-
Lagom mini
I have yet to make df64 ssp video but that would be in the price range of vario!
Lance, you rock!
@@freezingsunbreaka that's not a good way
Great video lance, Just an update.
Yep! I'm aware. I've been chatting with them since I released this. Hayden told me 🤙🏼
great rev
@@LanceHedrick Good to know, keep up the great content!!
thanks for this video, i enjoyed it thoroughly
Thank you so much! Really means the world. Appreciate you!
Thanks for the great video! Have you had a chance to test the new moonshine burrs? I prefer clarity in pour over but more body and sweetness in the espresso which i think might be lacking a bit in the wilfa uniform that I'm currently using. Ordered this grinder with stock burrs based off of your review, but would you actually recommend the moonshine burrs instead?
yes, also curious about this, so just bumping up your comment!
I’m a real one! Thanks for always producing QUALITY content ☝️🌱☕️Happy brewing!! ☕️☕️☕️
Thank you, Kimberly! Much love!
Nice review. Good to know it stalls and has popcorning issues.
Yeah. They already reached out and are actively working on the stalling!
you've got a great singing voice, lance!
Thanks for the link to the bellows! I’ve seen a few Asian reviews where they’re using a black cylindrical bellows but no idea if they’re of the shelf or 3d printed.
A lot of them are silicon that I've seen in Asia
I have some and they aren't super effective, tbh. I much prefer the one I linked!
@@LanceHedrick done deal! Keep up the great work, really love your videos and I for one prefer more chit-chat.
Thank you so much! I need to focus on comments like yours and drive the negative Nancy's out of my mind lol
I have the Remi which has the 38mm burrs and it grinds the best espresso and pour overs out of all the grinders I have. I prefer it over my old EK43S and my Sette.
Oh nice! I have one but haven't tasted yet. It is in my lineup for a massive hand grinder video I'll be working on soon.
I just came here for " The Coffee Song ". 🤣👍🇵🇷
Another great video
But I am curious about the “two shots per day “ limit On option O
Is that really two per day? Or can I do another two after a half hour? Or an hour?
Duty Cycle, simply put. The motor has a specific lifespan. Grinding more than 2 at that high of friction and torque will greatly lessen the lifespan.
Hi Lance, can the conical burr also be removed for a thorough clean? Thinking of picking one up someday with the 48mm moonshine burrs. Thanks
Same idea here, for my robot (so won’t be doing mass production espresso anyway)
@@alexmontanus Yeah. A bit tired of hand grinding for the Robot. :p
Hello, Lagom Mini user here, the black finish is not paint so it stays very well. It's metal sliver underneath.
@@mike216514 Thanks! I guess getting the silver one will mean less obvious dings and scratches will appear. The anodized black version is going to be more prone. Thanks for your help!
Looks like my work here is done haha! Thanks Ho Sze!
I’m a real one 😂
Thoughts on: Sage Barista Pro vs De’Longhi Dedica Arte + Sage Smart Grinder?
Big love
The built in grinder on a pro and the smart grinder are identical. I think the pro is a better choice between the espresso machines
@@LanceHedrick Order placed! Thanks Lance - will be going through your latte art series video by video when the machine arrives 😏
Hahaha! I feel this. It would be nice to have an in between. Something like $500-800 that is between this and the p64
They're great! They've responded to my video already and want to work on the stalling.
@@LanceHedrick would you do an update once option-o solve the stalling problem?
Option-O has already shipped my replacement Mini. Couldn’t be more impressed by the level of customer service. It inspires confidence in the brand.
@@bruceywayne9254 I 3d-printed a funnel to sit on top of the Mini that allows me to slow-feed beans when grinding for espresso and prevents popcorning out of the hopper. It’s tremendous, and there’s zero stalling when slow-feeding beans.
The question I have is use the baratza encore I have for my travel grinder or buy the option o mini with the obsidian burrs? Upgradeitis is no joke.
Def upgrade! Peer pressure (tbh this blows the encore out of the water)
What do you mean by the Lagom Mini can "only do 2-3 cups per day safely"? In a 24 hr period, it can only handle grinding 40-60g of beans? Or that you'd need to let it rest a while and cool down between uses?
I mean they say consistently going over that amount daily can shorten the life of the motor greatly.
And of espresso
My guess is that having a c40 it makes no sense to get the lagom mini? I think i get a flat burr espresso grinder.
@@LanceHedrick I am actually, good ol’ TX. Wonder if they put in a new motor or power block on the newer ones? Mine isn’t even a week old yet.
Oh y3s they did! Following this video haha. They sent Me the new block.
Does the issue of only being able to put a few shots through the mini impact your ability to dial in a given bag of beans?
Thanks!
Hey! I have it in the caption! A direct link to amazon
Lance power stance! FTW!
Only way to cup! Learned from my hero, Jack Black
@@LanceHedrick A hero indeed!
Haha! Mt dream is to do a video teaching him coffee. And singing.
If u keep that white plastic feed guard would it avoid stalling or is that thing annoying to use?
I was looking for an espresso grinder. I was really considering the Option O, the design is amazing and compact. What stopped me is that they don’t advice it if you make more than 3 espressos per day. Even though I rarely make that amount of coffee, I was more concerned with the durability over time if you use it only for espresso. In the end, I opted for the Niche even though it costs almost twice
df64 is all u need
I’d have given the Mini a chance. I’d be curious on the actually longevity of 2 Minis (one after the other) compared with Niche (given that the Niche is twice as expensive).
Option-O recently updated their product page and replaced the "2-3 espressos per day" language and instead mention the upgraded burrs could be used for espresso "home grinding duty, not commercial." I wonder if the change is due to more optimism around espresso grinding or if it's purely marketing change.
I like the use of the bellows! Would it fit a Baratza Encore?
Hey!
That is a great question. One to which I dont know the answer! Maybe!
