    I 3d-printed a funnel to sit on top of the Mini so I can slow-feed beans (when grinding for espresso) and avoid stalling (and avoid popcorning). It works brilliantly. Also, the funnel allows me to hot-start the grinder when grinding for pour-over.

    I find your comment about 98mm brew for p100 very interesting. I heard from a few users that say, in order to do espresso on brew burrs, you are only 2 notches away from zero (touch). Doesnt that really limit your ability to go any finer and limit your self to turbos only?

  • @BensCoffeeRants

    Nice to know they fixed the stalling in the mini.
    For P64 max RPM on it is the same as the DF64s speed (setting 4 out of 9 is a lot slower like 600rpm vs 1400) I thought it sounded about the same while grinding at the same or similar rpm but I love the smooth quiet motor on the p64. Tried a lot of grinders and I thought that one was the best in that regard (monolith flat has a high pitch wine, weber key has a reverberation noise, Eureka Atom 75 was actually good too just a slight vibration noise which was kinda nice especially considering the speed and power of that thing but that's a very different grinder. Eureka specialita was also pretty good sound wise. They do a good job quieting their grinders usually even when its grinding (Oro / XL is a bit louder though).
    Putting a lid on top of the p64 quiets the grinding sound just a little otherwise then sound travels up the burr chamber. I noticed the same thing on the Monolith and df64 etc it's always a little louder without some kinda lid or bellows to block out the sound.
    I never used RDT on the p64 worked alright that way.

  • @BensCoffeeRants
    @BensCoffeeRants Год назад

    Do the SSP Cast burrs really change with seasoning? Because (for espresso) I haven't found the clarity to be anywhere near the SSP MP burrs, it's more like a decent conical burr to me. Lots of body, not too much clarity.
    Update: I think I didn't love the SSP Cast burrs because the alignment wasn't perfect, and they really need a good alignment for clarity. The other burrs I really like, like the SSP MP, I suspect even if your alignment is off, since it's so unimodal it's still super high clarity.
    Might be interesting to see how they work for Aeropress though since they're originally designed more for coarser brews I believe. Just tried it with a weird coffee (which I didn't love but figured it might be ok for aeropress, but nope) at lower AND higher RPM, not bad, once I get the MP burrs back in the Lagom P64 it will be interesting to compare the two for aeropress. I think it's similar to how espresso works with the cast burrs, there's more body than MP so people who prefer more traditional coffee would like it vs the MP but if you value clarity the MP is likely the better option.
    I was surprised there was just a subtle difference between the SSP Cast burrs at highest vs lowest RPM not as dramatic as I thought it would be. Maybe a tiny bit more clarity, less bitterness in the low RPM but in High RPM I think there was maybe more complexity and a longer lingering aftertaste (which was kinda weird but I think that was just because the coffee was weird).

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants Год назад

      Sold my SSP 64mm Cast burrs, they turned the expensive P64 or DF64 into something that tastes like it might be out of a much cheaper conical burr grinder (might as well save money and get one of those!). I didn't bother seasoning them though, I didn't want to waste 20-30lbs of coffee, or suffer through a bunch of Meh coffee and waste the potential of good quality light roasted coffees before it started to have some flavour clarity! I have the Option-O Mizen Burrs coming hopefully soon which are similar to the SSP cast burrs but from what I've heard so far, they do have higher flavour clarity out of the box so they hopefully get even better and don't require so much seasoning. Most flat burrs I've had besides the SSP cast burrs seem like they don't really require seasoning, I've had some conical burrs that weren't so great until they were seasoned so I believe it's USUALLY more important to season conicals!

My current setup is a Decent DE1Pro, a Flair lever (signature) Kalita wave, a V60, a aeropress, and a Clever Dipper. I've been using Brew for several months now, all the warnings people gave me about Brews being boring or too clinical, none of that turned out true for me personally. However I interpret them as very, as the british say, quaffable. The body is delicate in a lovely thin manner that makes it easy to go through many cups without feeling palate fatigue or ever feeling like your chewing on a too thick body. It reminds me of when I nail a pot of exquisite tea and it's so sweet on its own that I can't help but want to down it too fast. It'll come down to personal preference though if you'd prefer a tad bit more blended body or not from the other burrs, but I personally say to not hesitate to try Brews if you have any curiosity whatsoever. The HU burr will have a lot of fines for brewing as it's intended more for espresso.
      Also will differ for others but I find the hyper clarity nothing but a perk as it encourages me in a fun and enlightening way to explore and find new delicious and lighter roasted beans that reveal bright fruits and florals. As a runner up recommendation, no personal experience with it but I know several lovers of the ULF in my group who say it's an excellent brew burr with a bit more blending going on. LUs are similar but different as well. I'd say ULF if you discover you prefer a bit of blended body, and Brew if you can't stand your curiosity anymore. But I wouldn't go HU for only filter.

      As long as the burrs are flatly machined you're unlikely to have any issues. At least for some version of the 98mm burrs there has been a shim needed because the burrs themselves are thinner than the HU burrs so without shim the carrier inner part would be slightly higher than the inner edge of the burrs.

      @@tob4942 thx id like to see something from anyone on a head to head comparison - or me it seems a couple extra percent on one axis of taste vs much faster grind time - I think I would take the latter. I also like the silver P100 a lot better than the flat max, but that’s just me …

    Good looking lineup, good brand uniformity, performance aside. Been considering making a switch from an MC4 to the P64 with a good all rounder burr set, possibly a P100. 70/30 espresso/filter usage ratio. Anyone done the same thing have any input?

      What do you not like about the MC4? Do you want more flavour clarity?

      @@BensCoffeeRants hey Ben, my man how are you? Thanks again for the detailed message you provided on your channel for me.
      Yes sir, in search of further clarity. I have the standard Roburs on my MC4, but even with probably 25lbs or more on them, it's possible there's more breaking in to do. My espresso brewing is anywhere from the bean emblem on the right (little past 10) to 7.5. Most stuff I've been grinding is right in the middle of that range around 8 or 9. Other guys who ran a strict break in program of ~25lbs right out of the gate for some reason settled at 2-4, which is odd and I may inquire further with Denis about why that's the case.
      As of now, on lighter roasts that work best with 1:3 or higher recommendations are coming in lacking the clarity I'm after due to fines, and I suspect further break-in isn't going to magically turn Roburs into high uniformity flats. I can't currently do crazy pre-infushions flow profiling, etc due to having a simple Rocket Giotto HX, but I'm itching for an upgrade (always like most everyone else in this dumb hobby lol)
      I've also been using my Moccamaster more and have an unloved Chemex that will probably get more seat time, and limiting fines is even more important in brew it seems.
      Thanks for checking in!

      @@JusBThankful for higher clarity lagom p64 with ssp unimodal burrs will be great. If you got the budget p100 with their stock ssp HU should be even better. Haven't tried those yet though myself ! Make me a coffee If you get that ;)

      @@JusBThankful it's not great for more dark roasted coffee which I don't like usually. If you're using coffee with flavours you don't like I'd think its gonna be even worse lol. I think conical burrs and monolith flats shuriken LM burrs do a decent job of making bad coffee less bad. But I've seen managed to get some bad coffees from the monolith sometimes.

    Great video, but you overlooked the not-insignificant issue of not being able to actually buy a P64 - at least not here in the U.S. The single authorized retailer currently has a wait list of at least a year, so hearing someone sing the praises of this great grinder is kind of an exercise in frustration for those of us who would like nothing better to own one but can’t.

      Just sold mine to someone in the US, and regretted it, then bought another one used, had to drive a few hours but made a nice trip of it!
      I heard there's a year wait, but I think they may have over-estimated in hopes of over delivering maybe? I think people have been getting them recently (although not sure if some of them had been waiting for 8 months or what) :D

      So do you buy all those grinders and coffee machines you review? I am just curious? Do you get those products for free, how does it work? I am just wondering how one can get fair reviews is everybody is getting products for free? I have been looking at a lot of reviews, and with the exception of James Hoffmann, who is very transparent on the fact that he buys and then gives away everything he reviews, I have a hard time understanding how it all works and how much fairness it all has? @@BrianQuan

    I have to decide whether I get a P64 or not. I have a Niche and an Ode with the SSP multipurpose, and I use both (the Ode doesn’t have the right adjustment range, of course, but it works), but I don’t find myself necessarily preferring the SSP shots to the Niche, so I’m not sure there is much point spending the money.
    I’m pretty sure I’m going to get a Mini for my fiancée to replace her Encore, though: if the grind quality is like or better than the Remi I have then the mini has to be as good as the reviewers keep saying!

    $2000k is ridiculous for such a simple tool. That motor is made in China and probably cost $20 bucks to make. People say-the precision though… yeah a $2000 telescope has way more precision with mirrors and lenses for that money. It’s crazy what they’re charging and crazier that people pay that. Hopefully soon more honest companies come out with more realistically valued products.
