- There's been a lot of different types of changers throughout Super Sentai's long-running history. But what makes a changer truly standout from the rest? In this video, I do a breakdown of the different Sentai changer styles we've gotten over the years, and share with you some of my personal favorites. What's your favorite changer or type of changer?

I find it interesting that Kamen Rider has basically said "Belts are mine, back off"
I think it's partly bc Sentai was originally a spinoff of Rider, so they wanted to distinguish themself. I will say tho whenever rider moves away from the classic belt designs and innovates it's really interesting. Few examples off the top of my head are Wizard's driver is literally a regular belt that gets magicked into a rider belt, or Necrom from KR Ghost having an eyedrop on his wrist as his transformer almost like a sentai wristband.
technically Zyuranger's henshin item is a belt
and the Reboot MMPR morpher toy is basically a classic spring loaded spinner belt that the cheap, below DX class rider belt toys use as a gimmick

so it doesn't work the same way

Another thing about the weapon changers/morphers, I could also say that it would also be convenient when an enemy tries to attack when their in the middle of morphing
I love that Kamen Rider's answer to the characters wearing bulky belts all the time was just keeping them in a magic butt dimension that they can just pull the belt from whenever
Yup, it's stupid when they let the viewers to think MC literally carrying thick buckle belt what ever he goes . Then the director just insert a frame where the MC holding the buckle out of nowhere before transforming. The only true depiction of KR struggle to bring buckle is in 555 where Takumi or someone else will bring the Smart brain briefcase
I gotta agree with the Shodophone it’s like you said how the home turns into a brush but then also how useful the shodophone is, anything they write comes to life
Another favorite changer of mine if the ToQger changer, so polite “please stand behind the white line”,

Sentai Changers are generally shaped in 3 ways:
•Watches
•Phones
•Weapons
-Watches are often preferred in this franchise because they are items that can be carried with you at all times and are easy to use.
-Phones are henshin items that were especially fashionable during the Heisei period but have not been preferred recently. (Something like this was last used in Zyuohger's core team)
-The use of weapons as changers has become fashionable in the post-Gokaiger seasons and has been frequently preferred recently. Sometimes this can be in the form of a gun, sometimes in the form of a sword.
+As for the Boonboom Boosters, I'm putting them in the weapon category since they are part of their user's sword/axe.
Late reply but for the Boonboomgers doesn't it fit more in the watches/wearables category? They use it a lot in the show as kinda smartwatches.

It also acts as a communication device so it makes sense
For me, i love weapon changers,specifically donrogoku spear/axe,because it dual usage

10: Turbo Brace
Reason: I remember having this as a kid and me and my brother use to always play with these outside.
9: Accellular
Reason: Other than the name, it’s playability is great, and it connects deeply to the shows adventure and theme as the bottom of it acts as a compass
8: Twin Brace
Reason: I have a deep connection with this one, as when my dad puts on Liveman, he always makes sure that the Twin Brace is in my hands so I can mimic the things the Livemans do.
7:Chrono Changer
Reason: Aside from my love for Timeranger, the Chrono Changers sounds make the feeling of using it even more halcyonic.
6: Ginga Brace
Reason: In a long time, this is one of the handful of changers that has usage for all 5 main rangers.
5: ToQ Changer
Reason: Not only is the trains super cool if you have a train set, but they also incapsulates the theme very well.
4: OhgerCalibur
Reason: Swords are one thing, but another sword changer is another, I love how complex and complicated it is to actually mimic the way the rangers change, and this is something I would of loved to see on the Ninja Ichibantou.
3: Gaburivolver
Reason: There are many Zyudenchis to use in this, capsulating on the collective side of this, it’s also super catchy.
2: Mobilate
Reason: I would have put the Geartlinger here, but then again, this puts in main theme more than the anniversary theme, and I like that.
1: Prism Flash
Reason: This was the ver first changer I had, and I loved it, it was so cool to show and play with it with my friends, it was so cool just to use it, and the gimmick was simple, not too complex.
If you like changers with a lot of collectivity, why isn't the Seiza Changer here?

Dinobrace is gotta be my fav changer.... Nostalgia aside yeah as you said the integration of the dino plates also the fact that they can actually communicate with their dino buddies is really cool! And like their mouths moving and stuff its amazing
And let's not forget how they were adapted for Dino thunder, changing for the changer to a cool super discreet metal bracelet, didn't make a lot of sense but still super cool

The interesting thing is the dynamic difference between Ultra changers and Sentai/Rider changers. Ultra usually doesn't try to be anything other than alien technology, so it often blends into the more boring or generic side of things. If they end functioning like something else (a magic wand, sunglasses, a blaster, etc.), it often feels more like coincidence than a thematic decision. But when Rider or Sentai make changers based on things we recognize (cellphones, belt buckles, safety locks, etc.), it's more fun to examine the similarities, the high-tech differences, and how they fit with the theme of the show. You'd think that the Ultra changers would be more interesting because of their freedom to basically be anything, but here we are.
Also, gotta be honest, I don't like the CONCEPT of using a weapon as a changer. I'm not going to complain if a show does it. After all, it's happened so many times, it'd be dumb to complain about it by now. I just think that, conceptually, you are putting your changer at a much greater risk of being destroyed if it doubles as a weapon. Honestly, would love to see that storyline play out more, especially if it forces the heroes to consider redesigning their changers into something new. But that's just my thoughts on it. I'm fine with whatever the show runners want to do.
I think the best way to describe Ultra Changers in a general sense would be Relics (?) since most of the time they dont resemble items you’d see everyday!
Ive seen people say they dont like Ultra changers because they dont resemble anything… which I get, but at the same time, like what you mentioned in the video, its very alien-like! Which I find appealing.
Sentai-wise, im fully biased, I love the SP license!
Personally, while I've not dipped my toes into Sentai as much (though Marvelous definitely fits his name), I do have to admit that the dichotomy of morphers between Gekiranger and Power Rangers Jungle Fury was interesting, as they both took aspects of the fully morphed appearance for the principle team's morphers, but went about it for different degrees of stealth. The guards used by Gekiranger are weapons, but also protective equipment, so if they walked around while wearing a Gi, the wearer could just play it off as equipment they forgot to take off after training or donned early on the way to training. By comparison, Jungle Fury making the morpher sunglasses with the same shape as the visors worked well also, since having sunglasses on your person isn't that strange in the United States, especially if you work somewhere that you may have to go outside at (such as a pizza parlor with indoor and mentioned outdoor seating). Differing levels of stealth/ubiquity, differing practicality (weapon/guard versus identity protection/visibility), same ultimate end goal.
As a Gaoranger fan I hope one day they’ll have a new version of the G-Phone that’s touch display just imagine how hilarious they would call it (G-Phone Gao Max)

Gekiranger was my 1st exposure to sentai and it got me way too excited when you mentioned it
It's funny how the only driver that has made an attempt of being concealed with the ring that reveals the driver.
My favorite is the mobirate. Not only i find it satisfying to turn the key to turn the screen into the jolly roger. You can be any ranger you want (it can technically be any changer you want.)

Shodophone(for reasons you mentioned and the fact being Shinkenger was my intro to tokusatsu)
Dekaranger morpher (S.P.D being the first power ranger i ever watched and the fact that it doubles as their id card and their tool to apprehend criminals)

JAKQ (Very unique and badass as well).
The Magi Phone is a realy cool morpher, it as well as the dino bracer and some of my top favs. I actually have the Wolzard variant of the Magi-phone and its so cool with all the spell combos
I blame smartphones for us drifting away from phone changers. Let's be honest, with as many impressive apps they can put in, nothing will replace that satisfying snap of opening a phone up, nor the feeling of pressing buttons. Plus, with how much you can do with a smart phone, translating that into a much cheaper toy would probably not leave you with much. Maybe it can be done, bjt it would take creativity.
Im a sucker for wrist changers, they most of the time look so slick and cool with out being super obvious, specially the Chrono changer and V comander, looking so simple but so cool at the same time, on the other hand I super dislike weapon changers with some exception of course, but most of the time they're so bulky and seem like they'd be a pain in the ass to carry around in your day to day
5:34 Well in theory, they can straight up release a 1:1 scale of the weapon changers as toys without the need of a memorial edition remasters. But since Sentai and other toku shows its predominantly audience is for kids and they sell toys to kids, they cant afford to make 1:1 scale versions cause it will make the toys heavy and not playable for the younger kids. And if they made the blade tip (for blade,axe style changers) using metals or stronger materials, kids will hurt themselves and others in the process. So thats why DX line is for kids and memorial edition are for adults.
I think Abarekiller has my favorite changer. The Top Galer design on the regular Dinobrace just looks so cool, plus I just love Abarekiller and Top Galer in general
My favorite changers are definitely the Powered Capsules from JAKQ, as they force the team to retreat to the Sky Ace to transform, relying on the more discreet cybernetic enhancements that they can access in their normal civilian forms until they can do so. Any transformation device that inherently puts limitations on when, where, and how the heroes can change other than simply losing it is automatically gonna be more interesting to me, which is also one of the reasons I really liked Kamen Rider Stronger and the first few episodes of the original Kamen Rider

The SP License is a Phone, Putting it in other feels wrong considering when it looks more like a phone than the Zyuohger changer and the Burger phone

Thank you! Good point, I guess I put it as Other because it screams to be as a police badge first and foremost with the phone function being very secondary. But that’s a fair point especially for the burger 😂

My top favourite changer are geartliger n geardaliger from kikai sentai zenkaiger also GoOn phone , shift brace n goonwings changer from enjien sentai goonger , gaburevolver/mousa changer from different dino sentai teams...

I like that the weapon is the changer cus than kids can have the whole essential roleplay set in one toy so that more kids can play together. And then everything else comes as a bonus or collectible but isn't required for a kids to have fun. where with more traditional changers kids need buy 1 weapon and 1 changer.
My opinion the SP License is a phone changer. Sort of. Basically it has the multi-functionality of a Smart Phone even before I-Phone.
Yeah weapon Changers are either Sword or a Gun.
I kinda miss the gun blades of early Sentai. Like those seen in Bioman, Maskman, and Zyuranger.
I think the weapon changers are hit and miss tbh. I think that if the rangers are known to be rangers it can work. Like I wouldn’t bat an eye at the pat rangers or the king ohgers having weapon changers because every knows they’re rangers and it makes sense thematically. However, if you want the secret identity part, a weapon changer is a horrible idea
I feel like Dekarangers sp License would be in the mobile category yk just more advance, also how come zyuranger, and kakuranger in the wrist section though both are ofc handheld i feel they should be other to
Honestly, the Gekiranger's changer is actually better than what Jungle Fury(sorry those who like Jungle Fury) and King-Ohger Calibur is still one my favourite changers so far. Great Ranking by the way.
+the precure (yes they are cannon in the Sentai multiverse) have the same ideas
Some wrist changers aren't very inconspicuous (ex.: Brace Throttle, ToQ Changer, the Abaranger changers, the Hurricanger changers - ESPECIALLY the Gourai Changer, that thing and even the much longer Bandai America Thunder Morpher would ALWAYS get mistaken for the Beetleborgs/B-Fighter & B-Fighter Kabuto henshin devices!!). And obviously, two-piece wrist changers like the Cross Changer, Power & King Braces, and Aura & Kibachangers have zero inconspicuousness whatsoever.
As for the SP & Master Licenses, I'd probably just lump them in with the Phone types, simply because while it's not the main function, they DO have a Phone Mode. (Change/Phone/Judge, remember?) Speaking of the phones, the larger ones aren't exactly inconspicuous either (Go-Phone, Shoudouphone, Mobirates, Gokai Cellular, Ninja Star Burger, and whatever ToQ 6's smartphone changer is called; Magishine's Grip Phone gets a pass because it's also a literal functional ticket puncher...)
Beet buster and stag buster can be categorized as phones rather than side weapons. The kakuranger doron changer doesn’t fit in traditional wrist changer category. It’s more like goseiger changer. The same can be said about gekiranger changer where the show did a lot of unique stuffs from their villain story to mecha good or bad. Does it count as wrist changer if they put it in their axe in the recent show?
Ah yes, so I know most generalize it as wrist changer, but I decided to call it “wearable” to include other items that are typically worn on your person (specifically like Dino Buckler), so that’s why I put Doron Changer there! Also I did intend to put the BoonBoom Booster in weapon, but I must have forgotten 😅
There is a certain irony and how many phone changers there are, but to the best of my knowledge I have yet to see one based off a smartphone. I'm more of a ranger guy than a Sentai guy, so anyone here is more than welcome to correct me
I think the only one is mainly the Applichanger from ToQger, and technically there’s that High School Heroes thing where they use their smart phones too, but that’s mainly it 😄 I think they could stand to use that concept more but then I think it lessens the creative possibilities for the toy version, which might be why we don’t see a lot 🤔

Is the zyuranger changer iconic in Japan? Even though the series isn’t as beloved as its western counterpart. The show introduced a new style of mecha, the sixth ranger trope, and a more unique changer.
i don't think so, they didn't reproduce it's merch as often as PR does with MMPR's
Ok so this isnt a toksatsu thing but would u be willing to do a talk video on sentai daishikkaku (gogo loser ranger). Its a cool subversion on the genre but the anime is pretty new

Im going to be brave enough to say it: one of the many missteps of PR Samurai was not integrating the Shodophone for the core team like for everything else they copied 1 to 1 from Shinkenger you would think the calligraphy brush part of the phone would be utilized since they were using 'symbol power' and you could've easily incorporated the designated colors for each core member but have Lauren keep the traditional style as she was learning the sealing power...ok Samurai rant over...for now...
It’s really funny you say this because I had a section of this video where I said exactly this, but I decided to take it out 😅 so I feel the exact same way!!!
Also like to mention the power rangers exclusive changers, the jungle fury using glasses, beast Morphers having keys for there changer and others that I might be forgetting
I would see shade/ glasses morphers make a return. Its what jungle fury one of my favs due to that distinguishing morpher
