  • Outdoor and action sport culture is drifting down a path of ultra-high risk. Yes, safety gear is important. But, Dr. Robb Gaffney explores the parent/child relationship and how it could be the most effective safety tool for kids entering outdoor sports.
Dr. Robb Gaffney is a psychiatrist working in Tahoe City, CA who for the past 15 years has been has been sharing his passion for the outdoors with his two children. As an accomplished big mountain and backcountry skier, who has written a book on high level skiing and has been featured in over 10 ski films, Dr. Gaffney has a unique perspective on risk, sports, and what elements lead to good decisions in the outdoors. Driven by the increasing morbidity and mortality in action sports, he founded the company, Sportgevity, and helped create the grass roots, Tahoe based movement, the Go Bigger Coalition. Dr. Gaffney believes that connecting children to the outdoors effectively and safely begins with the parent-child relationship.

Robb you are in the exact right space where you helped shift skiing culture from “extreme! I’m a gnarly toughguy, scowl, grrr” to a more fun, more silly, irreverent space of camaraderie and laughter…to recognizing this endless escalation toward sketchier and sketchier and making moves to pull back into family and love and just ripping around together having a good time instead of a contest of who can cheat death longest.
We’re the survivors of a movement that lost so many of our best, it’s on us to carry those lessons, and convey what was learned from the movements of our ski culture.
