Ronnie O'Sullivan Talks Snooker Legacy | Overcoming Depression | Becoming The Greatest of All Time

  • Ronnie O’Sullivan is known for disrupting the snooker world in his own unique and dynamic ways but he is interested in a lot more things than snooker! He is an author, keen runner and so much more.
    ✩NEVER MISS AN EPISODE ✩
Exclusive content & interviews only available on the podcast linktr.ee/robmoore
Ronnie really loves being in the world of running. He noticed early on that many of the people who are into running are laid back, social and not materialistic. You leave the rest of your world, career, money etc at the door. None of that matters in the community of running. It’s a great escape for him to be in that world.
Health and fitness was never something Ronnie focused on when he was younger. But he has spent the last few years on himself physically and is the healthiest he has ever been. He treats this ‘hobby’ as one of his addictions; he knows he has an addictive personality so has channeled it into something good.
Ronnie is very humble and says there are many snooker players out there at least as good as him if not better, but he feels like snooker fans are drawn to him because of the way he plays. They want to watch him.
There have been plenty of struggles in Ronnie’s life and career. By his mid-twenties he had suffered with bouts of anxiety, depression and addiction. But learning about these things and their impact on himself and the world around him helped him reframe his life and learn to live it alongside his demons.
Self-sabotage can take many forms. Most people do not even recognise the behaviours they are doing to sabotage themselves. Once Ronnie was told of his self-sabotaging behaviours he began to work on them and it made a dramatic difference to his career as well as his own self-worth.
The world championships in 2012 is Ronnie’s career high. He was 35 and didn’t have a lot of motivation or self-belief but he then met Steve Peters who helped him reignite his passion for snooker and he went on to win.
It’s essential to have the right people around you in sport. Having a good mentor, manager, partner and role models is so important for your mental and physical wellbeing as a sportsperson as well as putting you on the right path in your career.
In some ways surprising until you hear about Ronnie’s story, he would not recommend a career in snooker to anyone. He says it is a bad game, it’s can cause you a lot of damage, it is a waste of a life for almost everyone.

Great interview with honesty and humbleness. I like the fact that Ronnie talks openly about his demons and depression. Ronnie found it so difficult when he lost his dad for years. I found it difficult when I lost my saintly Mum to cancer when I was 15 back in 1988. I had a breakdown while my Mum was dying unfortunately. I couldn't stay strong for my Mum when she needed me. For years I felt guilty of having a breakdown but the first thing my dear dad said to me after I recovered from my breakdown, was "sue don't ever be ashamed of your breakdown." I didn't understand at the time what my dad meant as I was a naive 16 year old. But then over the years I found out how taboo mental illness was back in 1988. Im so glad we can talk about mental illness now unlike years ago when it was never discussed! So thank you Ronnie for opening up, it will help youngsters struggling too. I think it's only a matter of time before there will be a film out about Ronnie. That will be worth watching. Who plays Ronnie? A future good looking actor with a spark like Ronnie no doubt! Best wishes to Ronnie and his beautiful family ❤

What is different about snooker is that you cannot come out and win every week like you can in golf, cricket, football, tennis etc. Some days you are just out of kilter with your cue action or alignment or timing and you cannot correct it on the spot. The next day it all mysteriously comes back.
Mentally Ronnie has come to terms with this fact and yet deep in his soul lies a person who really hates it.
He is a perfectionist who has had to adjust to life as something a bit less than what he dreams of.
When I think about Ronnie scoring that maximum in 5 minutes and 20 seconds, he achieved perfection and changed the way people thought about snooker. That was a rare glimpse into what perfection looks like on a snooker table.
Control of the white ball is his greatest strength and that is what makes me want to watch him play, and by comparison makes me turn the tv off when most others are playing.

I loved Ronnie before this interview but I love him more, having watched it. Great insight into his character. He’s a genius on the table but there’s so much more to him and this interview shone a light on that

Very interesting interview, and shows a few sides that might not be obvious. As an aside, I was fortunate to see Ronnie in an exhibition years ago (around 2006 maybe) in Huddersfield, he knocked in two 147's in a best of 19 against Steven Hendry... that is a memory that will stay with me forever.

  • @philipdent-composermusicpr9297

As someone that grew up loving Ronnie. I was late in my life when I realised how bad my temperament was ,itl kill your life.
Ronnie's done well but he's achillies heal is he's temperament, mix that with people pleasing and anti authority,,having these negative traits really affected he's astonishing talent.hendry didn't have these traits and it showed In he's career .the good thing is Ronnie is a far better human being than snooker player .

Great great interview. I 'played' Ronnie once many many years ago. It was around 89 or 90 and i was a club player at Barkingside Snooker club (Not there now sadly) and on Thursday nights was a one frame competition. I played Ronnie in the first round once when he came down there - as a one off I think... He must have been about 14 and I was about 19... I broke off, sat down and he cleaned up. lol... Glad to see him doing so well and as I say, great interview!

  • @jamboz

Such an excellent interview. The art of interviewing is much more than simply asking questions. It's about asking smart questions, and not dominating the conversation by rambling on for 2 minutes by jamming in several questions and opinions into a single monologue -- I find lots of amateur interviewers do that, and it's frustrating to watch / listen to. The interviewer here nails it, he gets it right from start to finish.
Plus, Ronnie really is great at explaining things here, lots of the stuff he talks about I found myself nodding my head at, often stuff I'd never really considered before, like the amount of time a snooker player has just sitting down with their own thoughts when their opponent is at the table. I'm struggling to think of another sport like that, and it must take a strong mind to be able to do that day in, day out, and perform at such a high level for so long.
Well done to all concerned here.

Ronnie, You are inspirational and I am glad you did this interview and I congratulate you on how you turned out and are true to what you believe in and keeping your feet on the ground, while achieving exceptional high standards. It is one thing to stir & change but to then perform tops and better than the best is what I admire as I have done the same. I am not a snooker player, but over the years I always watch video's of you. I am 79 and live in New Zealand since 2001 and watching your interview made me feel "at home" having and still live and perform at high level. Take care and may life always be good to you. Special regards, Andries Maritz.

Very nice interview! But at the end Ronnie left me with a sweet and bitter feeling, because I do think he should not say things like feeling sorry for the 'other snooker player', I know he means well, but it's just not a smart thing to say. That 'other snooker player' was him 10-20 years ago, but he was fortunate enough to make enough money to create a situation for himself where he is now surrounded by good people and he has a life outside of snooker. Earlier he was talking about dedication to the sport and that is exactly what the 'other snooker player' is doing and it is the same with every sport, you cannot have all Roger Federer's in tennis, you need that 'other tennis player' who is happy getting to the final in a Challenger, you need that snooker player that never reach the professional level to make the sport complete and never underestimate the joy someone can get from dedication and reaching a certain level, even if that level is 100 miles below you.

Whether it's Ronnie or Rob, I'm not sure but that 2 hours flew by! Fantastic interview. Well edited with the "coming up" bits too... maybe that played a part in keeping me glued!
I've heard Ronnie talk about this stuff in interviews here and there but to have him in this form going into this much detail... really felt like I was in the room with him. He looked relaxed and happy even when talking about the darker stuff. Credit to Rob and the team for making him feel so at ease 👍🏼
