@jakkeday1 Many respected commentators would tell you why they consider Marita to be the greatest sprinter, male or female, of all time. Let me spell it out for you. No matter the era, EVERYONE, is on a level playing field, and yet, over 200m and 400m, Marita was still almost invincible. As far as I'm aware, she only ever lost 1 200m race, the 1979 World Cup in Montreal to Ashford, and 2 400m races, the 1977 World Cup to Szewinska and the 1981 World Cup to Kratochvilova. Just 3 competitive losses over 200 and 400 in 10 years of racing that included relays as well. (As far as I'm aware, she also won every relay over 4x100m and 4x400m that she ever participated in). She broke WR's over 50m, 60, 100m (an indoor WR of 11.11 that still stands today) broke the 200m multiple times, the 400 multiple times and still holds it, both of the relays multiple times and she is still also the unofficial holder of the 300m WR (34.1 made during her 400m WR). Therefore, Marita Koch, is the ONLY athlete, male or female, who has held, or still holds, EVERY regularly run sprint WR. People always talk about drugs etc, but, if it was just a case of drugs, the other GDR athletes would have been next to her as well and doing the 50-400 distances too. But, they weren't good enough to do so. And in all of her events, she still pulverised the rest of the GDR girls as well. Even if everyone in the world was 'clean' they'd have still metaphorically finished miles behind Marita. She is an utterly unique talent, a once in a lifetime athlete. She is more than a legend. She is the unquestionably the greatest sprinter, male or female, of all time. (For comparison, Graf lost more than 3 matches and if memory serves me correctly, she had a losing record against a younger Seles. I watched it carefully at 1/4 speed and I think she just avoids it. Watched at normal speed the shadow of her left foot in the overhead lights makes it seen like she touches but if you focus on the foot itself it stays in lane.
Flo Jo had never beaten Marita Koch over 200m during her lifetime. And the East German was smart enough to retire before dope testing became more stringent. She wouldn't have been able to set all her world records had she been clean. Her staggering 400m world record of 47.60sec set in 1985 still stands after 30 years. And even till today all the world's top 400m runners are struggling to break the 49 seconds barrier, let alone 48 seconds. Not impressed. When I was in high school, a 7th Grade boy ran the 220-yard dash in 24.0. The boy's high school record in the U.S. is 20.5 seconds, which was done 10 years before this meet.

@@mattwad9738 You said Koch over Flojo! There are documents outlining the German state sponsored doping program and Marita Koch's drug regimen. Of course we don't have any official evidence but it's highly probable that Flojo doped for about a year. It's the rapid increase in her performances from 1987 to 1988 that suggest this. In this 1986 race, I doubt Flojo was on anything whereas Koch was already benefitting from years of doping. In any case, Flojo had many advantages over Koch & every other woman in the history of the sport as a sprinter. She had the fastest foot strike in recorded history, meaning her foot was in contact with the ground for the least amount of time. Her combination of cadence and stride length, particularly with her lower leg forward motion was unmatched. At her peak no sprinter, male or female, could match her relaxation. If we recognise that the vast majority of female sprinters benefitted from drugs at some point (and even discount the 10.49 which was blatantly wind assisted), Flojo was a marvel!

Ranked 4 times #1 at 400 meters and 2 times #1 at 100 meters. Koch was never ranked #1 at 100 meters and never held the world record at the distances either. Szewinska was also ranked the world's #1 long jumper 3 times.
That is quite impressive!
+Bob Jacubas Koch was much better than the Jew
Yep Irena was in a class of her own. The all-round female sprinter we have seen. The first woman to break the 50.0 second barrier. And lets not forget beating the favoured and younger east german's Wockel (200m) and Koch (400) at the first world cup in 1977 at 31.
Not impressed. When I was in high school, a 7th Grade boy ran the 220-yard dash in 24.0. The boy's high school record in the U.S. is 20.5 seconds, which was done 10 years before this meet.
not indoors it wasn't meathead and not without starting blocks nor on a super tight track, this is a 170yd track, totally different to run on compared to a 440yd/400m track and run a 220, you're clueless!
Do you realize they were running on wood those were actually boards the track was made out of plywood
no blocks
That'sa tenth or so
Marita Koch over Floyo.
Being part of a nationally controlled drug program from your teenage years VS doping for a year as an adult!
@@jakkeday1 for a year?? Americans start as teenagers even today.

You said Koch over Flojo!
@@jakkeday1 I know, I´m also german. I also know the dude who got 2nd highest amount of drugs. But the americans did and still do the same
it makes me angry that you talk like this about athletes who without any shadow of a doubt have cheated throughout their careers; that the GDR has doped any sporty woman from an early age, and for about three decades, even the walls know it, and that sport should be a hymn to doping, I'm not in! obviously not only did they cheat; in Eastern European countries doping at that time was a common practice, but even the Americans were not immune, and among the established facts such as the positivity of Lewis and De Loach in Seoul, and other very probable ones, Griffith is certainly no exception indeed she, like Obelix, fell into the cauldron and drank all the potion! Today, however, everyone is suspicious, those who arrive ahead and even the last ones, that the culture of doping makes converts even among amateurs, who, in order to win the Sunday race, put their lives at risk, a stupid risk!
if this surrogate is the Sport you want, here you are served!
Slo Jo
Koch ran out of her lane. should have been disqualified
I think she may have too...but hey lol I guess we will have to call the congressional congress have a great day my friend
She never went out of her lane.
