  • Irena Szewinska beating the controversial Marita Koch who would dominate womens 400m from 1978 to 1985 when she set the current world record of 47.60. All that was allegedly done on a regime of sophisticated drug clinics in the GDR.

    She is definitely the best all-round sprinter the world has ever seen; and the best 200 meter runner.Being ranked # 1 in the world 7 times; in 65,66,67,68,74,76,77; 2nd in 64,69,73,75; 5th 78; 8th 79. In the 400 meters she was #1, 4 times; 74-77, 3rd in 78, 4th in 79. In the 100 m 2 times #1, in 67 & 74; 2nd in 65,66; 3rd in 68,73,75; 4th in 76; 6th in 69;7th in71; 8th in 78; 10th in 72. She was # 1 in 100/200/400 in 74, 200/400 in 76 & 77; 100/200 in 67. A completely outstanding record.

Irena Szewinska is by far the best sprint all round women's athlete in history...and she is also the cleanest. No other athlete would have such a long career as her ( 1964 - 1980 ) and still being at the top.
Just look at most of the women's sprinters since then, they will only be at the top for a few years and then dissappear after being caught on peds.
Szewinska was pure talent and hard work....period.

Koch lives in Rostock, Germany and manages a sport shop. She never has admited to have been under a doping program in the GDR. She even demanded the German newspaper "Der Spiegel" asking for 510.000 Euros when they acused koch for having oral turabinosi "the magic blue pills" from the GDR.

Mind that Szewińska ( her maiden name Kirszenstein) began her olympic career in 1964! First of all, there was hardly any doping in athletics in those days. Secondly, she wouldn`t have been able to continue her career for such a long time if she was just on drugs; it would`ve killed her several times before Moscow Olympics if she were. She simply was unbelievably strong and talented. Things happen!

In Jamaica and the United States there are no doping controls like in Europe. In Germany you get tested 4am in Holliday. In Jamaica and United States there are even no unannounced doping tests. So since the 90ies these American and Jamaicans etc sprinters have a great advantage, because they can take drugs like the Europeans in the eighties, while the European athletes can't do the same because European track and field authorities want to distance themselves from the patterns of communist, DDR etc. Sports methods of the past.

Marita Koch was the best 400m runner of all time. She was a natural 400m runner but unfortunately she used drugs. She will always be my favourite athlete

Damn that lady got some strong manly features. She could be mistaken with a dude if she cut her hair. To be honest i don't trust any record that came pre 90's from USSR and Europe.

You shouldnt 'trust' from that period fullstop. If anybody thinks those US sprint times (female particularly) were clean they are mad. USATF ignored doping by their athletes, the Eastern European nations encouraged it. End result is still the same.
The record books need to be wiped clean, started from the year out of competition testing was brought in. coincidentally the same year Flo-Jo shocked the world with her sudden retirement.
