No, GRRM has confirmed his father died of a burst appendix. Viserys is just emphasizing how quickly Otto rose from just a courtier to the second most powerful man in the kingdom.
I think he’s just saying that he used Baelon’s death to advance in the court. Positioned himself as a viable replacement as Hand, and likely played Jaehaerys’ heart strings who was grieving his son in order to be selected. It’s not really sinister, but I could see how it could be viewed as slimy
I believe this is correct. Otto became Hand while the king was grieving his son, and his daughter became queen when Viserys was grieving his wife. Viserys is making the connection of Otto manipulating others' grief to put himself in a position of power.
This time, Otto was clearly in the right. Rhaenyra not only lied to Alicent(lying on her mother's grave, a sort spot for Alicent, hence why she "declares war"), but Otto, despite giving this news to Viserys, doesn't enjoy it at all. It's not to put Aegon first, it's because he legitimately wanted Viserys to know the truth. It clearly hurts both of these men, as they are such close friends.
Lol, Otto served the realm for decades, always gave good counsel for two kings, he gave his friend his daughter's hand in marriage, who was a good wife to him and gave him three sons. All that and the king dismisses his father in law for telling him the truth. In Otto's place I would be fucking livid. He was as good a hand as you could hope for. "Calculated distraction"...cry me a river, as if Viserys is some 5 year old toddler with no accountability, the marriage was his choice, his responsiblity. Of course everyone has ulterior motives, everyone seeks to advance his own station on the side, of course they all wanted him to marry their daughters for the political benefit. It could have been a mutual benefit. Viserys's judgment is compromised, he put his emotions above the interests of the realm.
Otto Hightower was a social-climbing sneak who indulged in the corruption of King's Landing. He used his daughter like a pawn, first with comforting Jaehaerys in his old age (and there's some rumours in the book of what she did while looking after him) and then with Viserys. Otto never cared about the realm, he never cared about giving good counsel. The show made that quite clear by contrasting him with Lyonel Strong. If Viserys is guilty of putting his own blood above the realm, then Otto is certainly guilty of that too. The king named his heir, and Otto did everything in his power to undermine that decree. All because he hated Daemon and because he wanted his own blood on the Iron Throne.

This is the real reason Otto didn't want Rhaenyra on the throne because she knew he wasn't trustworthy just like Daemon did and Otto knew it. He knew Rhaenyra becoming Queen would put him in a precarious position because unlike Viserys who he could easily manipulate Rhaenyra wouldn't swallow his bullshit so easily especially with Daemon by her side. Thats why Otto planted the seed of doubt in Alicent to get her to change Viserys' mind even when removed from office Otto was scheming and manipulating Rhaenyra's one mistake was leaving Otto alive she should have had Syrax roast him and that would have weakened Alicent and the others because Alicent isn't as smart as she thinks she is her and Otto caused the war with their meddling and scheming

I think he was just recalling how otto became hand but it honestly is good speculation that he had something to do with the former hands sudden death I didn’t think that way
No, GRRM has confirmed his father died of a burst appendix.
It clearly hurts both of these men, as they are such close friends.
haha the treacherous Otto was revealed.
@@JimmyStellerby law at the time. Aegon was the rightful heir. Sons come before daughter
@@mohammedismail147that wasn’t true tho, sons didn’t auto get the throne before daughters like the way the first horns is first in line. Viserys name his daughter his air. They usurped her
@@hopesweeney-qx3ur actually they did, but his daughter would've been the first ever Queen of the 7 Kingdoms. The council was scared that this decision would cause a civil war, and they were absolutely right. Literally more than half of the heads of houses were not in agreeance. Viserys was a kind king, but WEAK. Sons did get priority when it came to birthright.
Otto did what any other Lord would have done ,put his blood in throne. Its kinda insane how Viserys blames him but he was not force to marry Alicent, he choose her even when he was adviced to marry Laena, the dance was going to happen with or without Otto involving himself and his family.
cole and eagon is a combo of ecstasy, coke and jack while drive at high speed... both are so dumb and disgusting.
Have you actually watched the scene where aegon fires otto ? I would argue that's much more understanding than viserys firing otto. The complete lack of tact and respect that otto shows aegon compared to viserys and given what aegon has already went through in his first few months as king. All viserys was dealing with in this scenario was sex scandals and wedding off rhaenyra. While aegon has to deal with a civil was starting and his own son being murdered by the other side.
He discharged him because Rhaenyra asked him to. Because her and Daemon got caught in a brothel. Otto is a good person. Viserys was good too but he was hasty with his decision making.
It’ll be nice to see him lose his head.
Otto was a conniving snake in the grass that over reached
Viserys is a weak king and dominated by all those around him. Otto does care about his own interests, but also fills the empty throne and manages the realm well.
Pretty unprofessional way to handle a conflict of interest.
