I have been trying to get doubles for like a year and after watching this I said what the hell and got it in like 20 min. Something just clicked. Thanks so much
I'm a self taught drummer. I have a lot of rhythmic experience from playing the tabla (Indian percussion instrument), and my way of learning was by playing to songs and applying what I learned in tabla to drums. I don't feel the best technically - I can't do all sorts of crazy chops and fills that easily now. It seems that this would be a great way to get started in that direction and learn more over time.
I am in the same situation - Just bought a kit again, comes in couple days and rather than just go at it again with my old sytle of playing and learning, i am concentrating on becoming technically tighter (i lack a lot of the basic fundamentals that can't be picked up by just learning to play a long to tracks)
This takes me back to high school when I would sit in the back of the room and get yelled at by the director for practicing doubles on a pad while everyone else was playing.
Wow. You impress me everyday. Back then i had quit drumming for x reasons but you would always upload videos that answered my questions and motivated me to play again. Recently i was thinking about how to do a proper drum roll technique and BAM, here you are. Thanks for everything.
I like how I started using my sisters drum pad while she was gone just to mess around and see what I could do and eventually I got this down I guess but I watched this video and then realized- “oh- I already taught myself?- how- how literally how-“ and I was so confused yet proud of myself 😂
Just now getting into drumming at 33 years old. I've always wanted to but finally got a practice pad and have been starting with tons of rudiments to try and get better.
i just realized how close your name is to Steven Tyler...lol......but i bet you get that ALL the time- lol wow...out of ALL the videos ive watched on Moeller and doubles...DOZENS of them, THIS is THE best one EVER.....i am learning that EVERYTHING on drums is muscle memory, and you CANNOT go fast without going painfully and agonizingly slow FIRST.....AND using a pad....i gotta get a hard one like that....im wearing mine out.... THANK YOU for doing what you DO-
I really appreciate this man because he teaches me more than my band teacher that was and graduated playing percussion and has a band but doesn't know how to teach so thank you very much sir
Problem I’ve always ran into practicing this is a pad just ain’t the same as doing so on a snare drum. Seems rebound is always more ample on the pad. When possible, spend as much time practicing this on the snare as well!
brian96597 I always tried to get practice in on a snare, but there’s always someone there to yell at me for being too loud. In high school it was my classmates, in college my roommates, now it’s my neighbors. I can never win.
I a 46 years old, ordered a practice pad due to arrive tomorrow, I am very exited to learn to play the drums, and it looks like I found the right teacher.
I remember my music teacher in jr. high having drummers practice that. I wasn't a drummer at the time, but I remember him telling them "mama papa, mama papa".
I know this is an old video but I just wanted to stop give my thanks for this video. I grew up before the internet really took off and you’d have to pay someone for information like this. My uncle was a master at playing the drums and always wondered about the “magic” of certain techniques. I saw this video and bought a practice pad and sticks and started practicing this. After just a few days I’m starting to get better. My biggest flaw is that I’m right handed and boy you have to be fluid in both hands. I actually do really good with my right hand because of it being dominant and having really good dexterity in it. My left hand, when I first started, was like trying to hold a stick with a brick for a hand. I subbed to your channel and I’m hoping I get really good at this. Thank you.
Thanks Stephen! Some instruction videos seem like a chance for the creator to show their talent or how much they know but this felt like a genuine attempt to help fellow drummers. Can’t wait to practice now
Great lesson Stephen. Thank you for posting. Developing doubles reminds me of my golfing days and the pursuit of the perfect swing. Developing both takes a long time and alot of practice. At least drum sticks are cheaper than buckets of balls.
Amazing video! Something that always bugged me when going for RRLL stuff was people telling me "you have to aim to make your Rs sound the same as your Ls", but in this video we can clearly differentiate one side from the other. I also reckon that due to a lot of subtle differences (like where exactly we end up hitting the drums, angle, acoustics), it SHOULD be incredibly hard to have the same sound from the two different strokes. Not to mention the difference in thee drumsticks themselves. So my biggest question is: should we really aim for that "same sound" feeling? Or should we focus on our subjective power and tempo more? (on that regard, I think the latter is better than the former ^^, but I want to hear more ideas!)
DanBC people differ on their opinion with this. Although I’ve never heard a drummer whole left sounded like their right. I think you should strive for evenness in your rolls. But to me, your hands will sound different because they are different. I tried for years to have my right sound like my left and vice versa. But they are different hands and they will sound slightly different. That being said, the goal is a smooth and even roll. Good discussion though and one I’ve thought a lot on.
If your hands sound very distinctly different, something is off. Everyone is weaker with one hand and you may be closing the diddle or getting a weak second stroke with the weak hand. Focusing on smooth, open, and even strokes will help the hands sounds similar enough. A good open double stroke should sound like a single stroke of the same tempo. If they don't, you are likely having the above mentioned problems (closed diddles and/or weak second stroke).
Thank you Stephen!! As begginer this technique has been driving me insane with frustration!! I think I had an "ah ha!!" moment. I couldn't understand what was meant by bounce. I thought you had to let gravity just drop the stick which made absolutely no sence to me because speed would be completely governed by terminal velocity!!! I knew there was something else going on. I got so frustrated with my friend who was trying to teach me saying "You JUST bounce the sticks" I whacked him with the sticks!! 😂
The circular motion derives as the Whip Cream roll Buddy Rich learned from the New Orlean drummers. That style of roll has been around for a hundred years now.
PanchoPlant sure, totally agree. I lived and gigged in NOLA for 3 years so I’m very familiar. And that circular motion is very common in creating a smooth buzz roll (something the drummers down there are insanely good at). But, it is much harder to get a consistent and even double stroke roll by adding a whipping, circular motion. Ive listened and studied most of the drummers from that area. And if you go in to a drum line situation, orchestral, etc. you need to know how to perform a traditional double stroke roll. So when I teach, we start with the basic mechanics as I broke out here. Learning hybrid ways of rolling later down the road is great. But they help little if you can’t play an even double stroke roll. Circular motions will only compound the issue at the start. building off of a good foundation is also key. Great discussion though.
1. If I start learning with chopsticks on convenient flat surfaces, how much trouble will I have moving to sticks? 2. I have arthritis in every joint (genetic disorder thing). Is it a bad sign that a few minutes causes me pain and joint fatigue, or is that normal for beginners? Thank you so much! I've wanted to learn drums for a good 40 years, and I'm trying with what I've got.
Hope I’m not too too late to responding. (I’ve been a percussionist for about 7 years now) 1. Even with no experience moving drumsticks isn’t too difficult but since you’ve been practicing that way you should already have it down. Obviously though the drum sticks are going to be a bit heavier and bigger so those should be about the only differences. 2. it was pretty normal for me to get pain in my wrists when I was starting off but you should become numb to that pain pretty quickly.
I dunno if its your thing but can you do a lesson on "hip hop grooves"? I know it isn' t every drummer's cup of tea but its something interesting and fun to learn
