RC ADVENTURES - Portal Axles: What Are They?! Install on my Trail Finder 2 RC4WD

  • PORTAL AXLES for my YOTA! I have had these for about 2 months & finally I have had the time to get them installed. I figured I would cover what portal axles are, and what their uses are - for our new viewers and for folks that are interested in how they work. Are they beneficial to you?! Very possible. By installing these portal axles, I am able to effectively lift the differential housing away from the low clearance hang-up issues - and at the same tim by transferring the load of each axle to Dual same 15t Gears per side.. the work is cut in half by load sharing. Easier on my ESC, Easier on my motor, and easier to turn these tires when there is sticky mud everywhere. Use lots of grease!
$30 Factory Team HEX Bit Set: amzn.to/2gHbqYc

I love the winter because we get more of these build videos. I still don't own a single R/C vehicle but know way more about them than I should. As 4+ years of watching this channel will do that to you.
Side note I just went back to see when I subscribed and I think it was around winter of 2012. I found a comment of mine from 4 years ago on "Skate park pain 5" But I also remember project overkill being built so it could have been earlier.

A cool trick that I did with my TF2 was mounting my tires backward on the stock RC4WD steelies. The exact number escapes me at the moment but the track width is increased by around 10-15 mm per axle... The rig became more stable when leaning to the side and when on the ass end. This mod helped with stability and with correct tire placement on your obstacles and with the great help of geometry, helped with that extra pumpkin clearance.
The other thing I did which a lot of people steered clear of was the overdrive of the front axle as it is a pain in the arse to do and definitely takes a bit of RC experience to do correctly. This was the best thing I have EVER done to my rig. Doing the old trailfinder backflip on steep inclines or serious ledges was near eliminated, Turning was increased and the precision I got driving, crawling, extreme crawling, in the high current or algae infested river ways -a total driving rig. The only downside I found with this was the serious mud bogging which I do very little of but the mod works adversely. I am working on a solution to that this years season... Anyone interested in an almost too good driving TF2 or wants improved crawling with precision or simply wants to try something new, just continue on this thread...comment...whatever we call this...and happy trailing

Portals with a gear reduction are also much nicer on diffs as they take some of the load off the diff centre. Rock crawlers use these and can get away with a much smaller diff centre and the portal does the majority of the gear reduction. Cool to see them in R/C

The RC4WD portal axles don't have gear reduction. They definitely lift your pumpkin but both gears on each side are 15 tooth. Its still 1:1 gear ratio.

Another cool video, cheers Medic. Correct me if I'm wrong though, those portal axles don't have any reduction in gear ratio, they're 1:1, they'll reverse the tire direction. Look awesome though and lifts the yota even higher, looks on point 👌 👌 👌 👌

  • @skagerstrom

One more good thing : On the Traxxas you'll probably get less tourqe twist, as a certain percentage of the tourqe transfer happens in the portals. Meaning the main driveline from the gearbox to the diffs can run at a higher speed - transfering less tourque - thus reducing tourque twist.
This particular set do seem to (if my eyes arnen't tricking me) have the same size on both the gears - so no gear reduction benefit here.

I have a TRX-4 and found out I couldn't use RC4WD 1.9 wheels. I got a new set of RC4WD 1.9 Raceline Monster Beadlock wheels and can't use them with the portal axles. In fact the inside diameter of any wheel needs to be at least 38mm to be able to use them with the portal axles. I got a set of SSD 1.9" Steel Trail Beadlock Wheels (Black) and a set of their new Portal Brass Weights for the front axle. The weights are very heavy 75g/2.64oz each and are easy to install. They replace the outer plastic portal covers. I did it with the axle on the truck. I also have 3oz of lead weight in each front wheel and 2oz in each rear wheel.

Love the video HOWEVER as a fellow Canadian it would have been great if you had provided a link to your tool that would ship to Canada. You Amazon link says "This item does not ship to Canada"

Hey Aaron what do u think the best beginner rc crawler is? I really love the crawler videos and rock crawling in general and want to get one. But not sure what’s the best. And suggestions??

My friend - I wish I could say for you - as it is all personal choice. Some Brands to investigate would be Axial Vaterra RC4WD Traxxas, HPI and GMade. These are a few of the mainstream brands of good, current quality. RC4WD is super scale stuff - while the other brands are more "General Trail Trucks"
