I had a similar problem to what a bunch of people here said and still checking online for solution. I have Windows 7 and was using a WD external hard drive.
When I plugged it in to any of my USB ports, I get this popup that the device wasn't recognized or it may be defective or it may ever say anything.And won't show the device or drive.
I was pretty worried and confused. Searched all over the internet and forums. used many softwares , changed the usb cables ,but of no use.Finally my fellow friend ,who is PC technician put together a couple solutions and solved it! Let me show you exactly that.

i've watched a lot of tutorials and searched all how to's of how to fix my external drive problem all of them has "unallocated" space and i don't even have that so this is the only one that worked! you're amazing!

My hard drive had been unrecognized since 2018. Tried formatting it several times but with no progress. After watching this video it took me 20seconds to start using my hard drive again. Thanks a lot
To anyone having the grey out issue that only allows you to click on "help" and "delete volume" I have solved this issue. You have to click on delete volume and set up a new volume using the set up wizard. Once you delete the volume you can then right click again to "set up new sample" follow the wizard, assign your drive letter and your done. Hope this helps!

Thank you for this explanation. For some reason none of my external hard drives were being recognized by Windows 10 today. They have always worked in the past, but this is the first time no drive I have connected would be recognized. I still don't know what happened, but at least I have this work around now to force it to be recognized. Thank you!
i tried these steps but the option is unhighlighted and wont let me select the option you spoke of...?
go to my computer, turn on view hidden files, eject unwanted hidden disks, try again.

@TheBigHase xp doesnt support that. Try 64 bit windows 7 or 64 bit windows 10. Dont use 32 bit OS

Hi I have a problem with external hard drive. It work perfectly but
after booting laptop from shutdown I need to take out and replug inorder
to read this drive. Window doesn't automatically reconnect the drive..
So any idea how to solve this problem??

I don't know if you can help but my problem is the exact same to the point of changing the drive letter, however when I right click to choose that option it is not bold and is not letting me click it. the only option i have is to click "delete volume" or "help" and i was just wondering if u knew how i could fix that.

Instead of cliicking ADD, click on CHANGE and you should get an option to change the drive letter..........

Just make sure your anti virus is not blocking and your HDD is properly formatted for Windows. Anyway first go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Folder Options > View Tab, scroll down and confirm that there is a tick in ‘Show drive letters’. Also, the field ’Hide empty drives in the Computer folder‘ should be ticked for removable storage.
Same problem, I have no anti-virus, the boxes are ticked aswell....

You can use r or f after the /
And e as the drive letter is just an example.... So you will have to use ur hdd letter there

what if the option for change drive letters its grayed out and cant be selected????
Maybe your disk is in MBR type instead of GPT. Download MiniTool Partition Wizard, look for your disk and if it's MBR type do right click on it and select Convert from MBR to GPT. Also look for the partition type of your disk, if it is FAT32 or NTFS is ok, but if it is some type of EXT you also have to format it to FAT32 or NTFS. Click apply to apply all changes. Once finished, disconnect your disk from USB and connect it again, your PC will detect it automatically

I know this is a year after the comment, but I'll just post for anyone in the future that comes across this problem (which also happened to me). All I did was delete the Volume first, then format. After that, I just followed his instruction and assigned it a letter and it worked for me.

Thank You sooooo Very Much. I was wiggin out because I couldn't find my External and these easy steps did the trick. Another site wanted me to go to the Control Command...So not on that level.
but when i go to disk manager its not there
One possible solution is got to Control Panel->System and Security->Storage Spaces'. See if that drive is set up as a storage space, if so, delete it. Then again go back to disk management. Sometimes Windows gets too weird.You just have to restart it couple of times and leave it there. It might load up the drive.

Sorry it was not salvagable but luckily it was under last 2 weeks of warranty so I gave back to reseller after 2 months of struggle somehow got the a replacement.
So issue in u r hard drive?
They did not say what exactly was the issue but it was apparently it was unfix-able.

this work when the disk is corrupted too? I turned my computer off by mistake when my external was loading a file then when I rebooted windows keeps asking me to format the drive.. I'm not formatting shit lol.. I have very important shit on there... changing the drive letter does not damage the disk?
