I watch this podcast regularly to constantly remind myself how to take responsibility for my life and to feel strengthened by that. Today is a hard day.
Today my dad told me my uncle is dying of pancreatic cancer complications. We can’t even go to the hospital to say goodbye because of this virus. I am very close to him and he’s been a mentor of sorts in my life. He’s an engineer who has made a big impact on many people’s lives.
My family thinks the odds are very grim, only my cousin, his son, is holding on to hope. This is very tough and I just felt the need to write about it. It’s hard to think we may not be able to see him if he passes away.

Thank you all so much for your kind words to a total stranger. My uncle died yesterday at 1pm. He never woke up from a coma he was in. My dad has been torn by this, I’ve never seen him like this. This was his only brother and they were the two closest people in the world. I’m trying to be there for him and for my cousin, it’s all I can do. The hard thing about it is that it wasn’t a bad cancer, the doctor said he could have lived with it for the rest of his life and been fine but my uncle was persistent he wanted to remove it surgically and that’s when everything went wrong. They removed it but the surgery caused many other serious problems. So it’s hard to process someone who was so healthy and full of life just a month ago, all of a sudden gone. It’s awful but we will have to get through it together. Thanks again. God bless.

The intro was hard to listen to. My family is from Laos and many died in the secret war in support of US troops. I am the first to be born in the USA and serve in the US military.
At times I am heartbroken about the history of my family’s past. Other times, I am full of gratitude to be born as an American.
Thanks for writing this book. To this day, all my family members who experience trauma from the war, would not talk about it and still feel betrayed from the Americans who left them to died. This book seems to open up on the kept secrets in that war. Thanks

If not for honoring the agreement between laos and the u.s. to keep it neutral, which the north Vietnamese didn't, things would have been a lot different... without safe passage through laos, it would have been difficult for the north to use Cambodia at all and seriously affected their supply chain.

I'm 64, old enough to remember our Living Room War, and never did serve because though possessing a 1-H draft card, Pres. Nixon has instituted the all volunteer army and Pres. Ford had ended the war by the time I graduated from high school in 1974. Not to mention that the yellow beret was too often an option. Small world! Former SOG Lieutenant Robert Van Buskirk was one of the Americans on this op and was misquoted by CNN. Met him while helping a buddy a sell a airplane he inherited and Buskirk was the buyer. He has a Rolex and a sapphire pinky ring and I asked if he was SF back in the day. He couldn’t believe I called him out as SF and told us about tailwind. Also crazy is the fact I met James C Parker who was running the battle for the CIA in Laos at the time of Tailwind. Got a call from of of Parker’s former soldiers when he was a Capt with the 25th INF. Tracked down Parker and explain I had one of his guys being denied VA benefits because there was no proof he ever served. James was appalled and helped my get enough sworn affidavits to finally fix the soldiers denial of benefits. Small world!

@ 1:00:00 approx re helicopter damage.
I worked on the 53 while in the Air Force. I assume the Marine ships were similarly protected: The pilots sat in seats that had thick metal bottoms, backs and side wings that extended forward enough that the torso was protected. The armor plating was placed at critical bellcranks, tail, intermediate gear boxes and key points of the main transmission. The engine fuel controls were protected, but there was no protection for the compressor or turbine section. Certainly weight was a limiting factor. The main rotor blades could easily take a bullet as it was thin sheet metal but a hole in it may cause a pocket to rise up, affecting the blades tracking, hence a bumpy ride. A hole through the blade's spar would be critical. The drive shafts from the engines to the main transmission and the shaft to the tail gearboxes were hollow and about 4" in diameter. From the engines and to the tail, each section was attached to the other with a stackup of thin stainless steel discs, the assembly was called a Thomas Coupling, the flexability of which compensated for the flexing of the airframe. The placement of the armor plating guarded against ground fire straight up, but once on the ground, eye level fire could hit critical components.
    Re 1:40:00 autorotation:
Helicopters have a one-way clutch that mechanically disconnects the engines should they quit, ie a sprag clutch. The main rotor is free to turn. The tail rotor is also driven by the same gears that continue to rotate when the main rotor turns. The upward flow of air spins the main rotor. Rotational speed is partly controlled by dropping the nose and raising/lowering the collective control stick. Biting more air slows the rotation, lowering the collective bites less air and rotor rpm goes up. I think max rpm on the 53 main rotor is 350rpm. Flight controls can only be moved if there is remaining hydraulic pressure. Primary pump drives directly off the main gearbox and secondary and utility pumps are mounted on the accessory gearbox that is mounted fwd of the main gearbox and between the engines. It is driven by a driveshaft out of the main gearbox or the APU. The hydraulics runs at about 3000 psi so any bullet holes to any of the pressure lines would be a spraying mess and fire hazard. It uses Mil-H-5606 red fluid.

    • @brandonstonestone1795

The reason he refers to them as commie news is because they interviewed General singlaub and he admitted to CNN that he was the one who requested chemical weapons that were used against the nva. And most sog men know nothing of the chemical weapons because of the compartmentalization. But CNN did an extremely good piece on sog. That they didn't like. Because of the obvious war crime. How else do you think these guys were able to get out alive against multiple divisions of nva.
