    After the match Rapport said instead of the expected threefold repetition, he played e5 without seeing the end results. He called it “a leap of faith” move.

    I am so happy that Rapport won. Watching him play in the Candidates will be amazing against top players like Fabi, Alireza , Nepo etc.

    At 4:50 Rd1 to C1 was played probably to defend against the threat of Bishop takes a3,bxa3 followed by Queen or Rook captures knight on C3.

      Or maybe to bring Black's queen to a5 and then the queen couldn't defend the e6 pawn so black had to play Kf7..

    The only way he doesn’t make the Candidates now is as follows: In the third leg, Hikaru has to finish in second place (or win his pool with a better tiebreak than rapport) and the first place winner must be Dominguez, Giri, or MVL AND they must have a better tiebreak than Rapport.

      I think that chances are he won't qualify if Hikaru finishes in second place and either Aronian or Andreikin win the third leg, as Hikaru and Aronian or Andreikin would get 23 points and leave Rappoprt behind with 20

    Insane from Rapport. Very accurate in a volatile position...which leads me to wonder why Andreikin opted for the Janowski. It just played to Rapport's strengths in complex positions.

    He had to play rc1 as there is bxa3 otherwise and if the bishop is taken by the b2 pawn, then the c3 knight hangs(attacked twice). With rook on c1, the c3 knight is defended twice.

    at 12:33, in your what-if scenario, if black queen moves to d4 instead of b5, then Dmitry could have check mated the white. After that queen move, even if white pawn advances and gets 2 queens, it is worth nothing. In the next 2-3 moves like rook to c2, white king to c1, black queen to d2 and dropping the rook to row 1 will finish off the King.

    4:45 There is an obvious reason why Rapport plays Rc1. Black can play Bxa3 and if white takes back with bxa3, one of the defenders of the knight on c3 is gone. So Rc1 adds another defender for the knight.

    What would happen if the scores of 2nd place are equal? will there we some tie break matches or just take the standings as they are?

      First tiebreak is number of grand prix wins, second is number of runner ups, third is a bit ambiguous, number of total game points, fourth is equally ambiguous, number of total wins. Ambiguous because those who make semifinals/finals will obviously have more games.

    Probably the likeliest scenario of Rapport missing Candidates is Giry over Nakamura in Leg 3 finals, with Giry having a chance to get more points in classical games.
