I love mine. I have 9 of them with 5 Harlequin Rasbora and 3 Endlers in a 13 gallon planted tank. They stay mid tank and school loosely, but really don't seem to hide much. I also have 3 Panda Loaches and some Neo shrimp, which gives me lots to watch at all levels of the tank.
+Rachel O'leary Would theese guys be okay to be put into a RCS tank with some Sparrow Rasboras. I'm hoping to have some shrimp fry and don't want anything eating them!
Oh dear! haha will my saprrow micro rasboras? atm they just hide behind my sponge filter and don't really venture out much. (going to get a surface plant so they feel more safe. thanks for the reply!Rachel O'leary
+Ryan Hotchin I keep a really dense area of have moss that the fish can't really swim into well. It became a fish sanctuary. It's like a little city in there. Some get eaten a lot survive. But it balances out. I started with about thirty and never really bought more than the occasional nice female to keep the genetics diverse.
I am glad you said they are not schooling fish. I think they do well in a heavily planted tank where they can steak out their territories. They won't fight to the death like betta's but they would keep re-establishing their place. But they lived a long time. The last two lived about 6 years.
I have 15 of these, 15 Cardinals and 15 Ember tetras. They tend to swim around in one giant school all together, the Embers group together tightly within the school while the Cardinals and CPD's spread out within it. Mine aren't all that shy, I'm wondering if that's because the Cardinals are so outgoing and make them feel safe.
Mine just had babies this week. Interestingly, they aren't shy at all for me. They come up for feeding when I gently tap the rim of the tank. They live with a Betta and a small Albino pleco in a 50ltr.
I have a group of 6 small CPDs in with ember tetras, sparkling gouramis, glowlight tetras, and orange von rio tetras. They often swim with the embers, who are closest to them in size. I switch between about 5 kinds of food, always making sure some of it is ground down to powder size so everyone can eat. I have a good number of plants, none of them are very big yet, but the CPDs haven't been overly shy and swim all through my 29G tank. I only got them a few days ago. They're doing good at filling out their thin bellies, and I'm looking forward to being able to see them easier as they grow. They are beautiful little fish.
Hey Rachel! I just bought 10 of them and put them in a cycled, moderately planted 10 gallon with my small but relatively established red cherries. Did your way of plop and drop and kept the lights out throughout the process and for about another hour. Fed them live daphnia and then turn the lights on after a while. The things is, I expected them to be very shy and hide in the plants like what you've said. Instead, what I am seeing are 10 EXTREMELY active and social fish that swim around A LOT (both around plant covers and through uncovered open swimming space available) and gravitate especially to the side of the tank where they can see me. Is this normal behavior for newly introduced CPDs (or fish in general)? I really don't know if all this excitement comes out of stress of being in a new tank or them just really enjoying what they perceive to be a safe new tank.
If you have enough CPD's and the tank is well planted, they're not nearly as shy. My CPD's killed all of my cherry shrimp. They were sharing a large bunch of java moss with the shrimp, and were in full breeding/spawning behavior, and I think they just didn't like the shrimp in their breeding area. I started with a breeding colony of cherries, about 20. I had 12 CPD's, good ratio of males to females. They haven't bothered the Amano shrimp in the tank. When I questioned the place I bought both the danios and the shrimp from, they said I must have too much copper in my water. Not sure how that factored in since I have cherry shrimp in other tanks using the same water source, or how the pieces of shredded shrimp I found happened. Only other fish in the tank are several panda corydoras, not typically known for attacking anything, let alone shrimp.
Cpd's are definitely one of the top 5 most beautiful nano fish. I had four in my nano community tank and sadly lost all of them one by one to dropsy, any ideas why would be appreciated.
I've got a planted 20 w/ GBR, Cherry Barb, Phantom Tetra, Julii Cory. I'd like a super peaceful small surface feeder that hangs out up there. Small school, like no more than 6. Was hoping CPD were good for this, but probably not after watching with great vid. Looking for suggestions, advice...
Densely planted back + mid ground with heavy covering of floating plants, dark substrate, dark wood, compatible tank mates of equal size or smaller, and they will be far from shy.
700 lumen sounds spot on for that sized tank, esp been dimmable. Im having a great deal of success breeding Celestials; lost count at over 300 fry so far and hardly any losses. Got a video up on my profile when i first noticed them spawning.
I guess I have the odd ball group since my school of CPDs haven't been shy at all. Hangs out mainly in the mid level, but goes everywhere. Have them with some decent sized fish too. (Celebes Rainbow. Was also with Buenos Aires Tetras for almost a year)
I got 8 of these guys for my 5 gallon fluval spec. I temp acclimated them for about a half hour before netting them and putting them in the tank. They colored up immediately and didn't seem shy at all after a few hours. They ate the same day (I fed them some crushed flake food) and they seemed to be thriving. They seemed to die at a consistent rate of 2 per day after that even though they weren't showing signs of sickness or stress. I would wake up and inspect the tank and to an attendance basically, always to find 2 dead somewhere. My water parameters are good, and the flow in the tank is low. But they all died? I would love some help with this because I have never had die off before, especially not on this scale. I get all my fish from the same store. I really am at a loss with what to do :(
curious how you'd think a group of 6 of them would do in a 15g long with 2 bolivian rams, a cherry barb, and 5 endlers livebearers? You think they'll be scared of the rams, or will the endlers livebearers help them feel safe? Thanks
Mine are not shy at all somehow. I used to have shy ones. For some time I had no tank. Now I bought CPD's again and these are not shy. They come to glass when they see me. They come to inspect new objects in their tank for example when I am gravel vacuuming. They don't fear a betta that is living with them . Maybe that betta is their dither fish, cos often they seem to follow him . I am lucky that my betta doesn't see them as food. Though risk was high, because I bought them almost at fry size. Anyway none are missing and they are almost adult size now.
I was given some yomo danios from the same fish store in riverside,ca..just wondering if they can be aggressive towards the celestial pearl danios? I just saw a yomo danio harass one of my celestial pearl danios...also came home to find one of my danios dead.
i'll be picking some of these up in 2 weeks time. any tips on introducing them to a new tank? they'll be without tankmates(or maybe dwarf shrimp) but i assume a few hiding places, but what about lighting and food?
Rachel idk what causing my celestial pearl danios to die...same with the yomo danios. I don't drip acclimate during partial water changes. And I keep my temperature as close to what you said in this video. This the first time keeping them and I'm having no luck keeping them alive for more than a week...this is the second day I've had them...ive lost 2 yomo, and 4 celestial pearl danios so far already...
Kathleen Monsegue Maybe you have a little ammonia or nitrite or too much nitrate in your tank? Did you cycle it? Perhaps the fish were sick when you got them 🤔
HI Rachel. I have been binge watching your videos, very cool. May try a planted bin this summer. I have 8 juvenile CPD in a fluval spec V, planted. They will move to bigger tank in a couple months. I have kept 15 wild caught in a 30g and hardly saw them until my evening low viewing light came on. However with the tank raised onesthat I now have, they are quite sociable and even come to the glass in anticipation of being fed, I arranged plants and they came to investigate my chopstick with no fear. My question is" Will this sociable behavior disappear after moving to a 30g tank? Thanks
That depends a lot on decor. You may want to get more to add to the group, or combine them with another small "fearless" fish to help them feel secure with that much space. Thanks for the kind words! I am glad you are enjoying my channel!
When you say they do better if you have a lot of them, how many would be a lot? I'm trying to decide if I want to get some. They look so cool like small trout.
Love CPD's! Awesome video Rachel! Are we allowed to request species spotlights lol? If so I'd like to see a video on Dario Dario..fast growing popular fish but not much info on them and members of the dario/badis family
thanks for the informative videos :) I have 8 of these guys in my 10 gal and luckily they aren't that shy. I have a few Endlers in there so maybe they are helping. Unfortunately when I got them I had no idea what sex they were, is it dangerous to have a higher male to female ratio?
I have a single Swordtail and a few bottom dwellers, would I be ok to add some of these guys with them? I had male guppies but they bothered my swordtail.
I notice that your cpds have sunken in stomachs, are they a diseases or sickness? Because i own some cpds with sunken stomach too. Any tips to get them well fed ?
Just came across white cloud In my local fish store. WOW didn't have realize how beautiful they are. For only six for $10 why are they not in EVERY tank. Am I missing something???
+DaSchoe Nope, that is why I stocked them in my 150. Fantastic fish, and a CARES species (i.e. endangered or extinct in the wild, and maintained solely through farming and hobbyist efforts)
How shy are they compared to danio erithromicron? I love them and all but they don't fully come out unless I stand in front of the tank in the dark. They hide more than kuhli loaches. Seriously though, don't get them if you want to see your fish.
+thetheflyinghawaiian I have a bunch of emerald dwarves (Danio Erythromicron) too. When I first got them, they hid most of the time, but now I have them in a densely planted tank with neons and male guppies. They are much more confident when they know that they can reach cover with the flick of a fin. sometimes they even get into sparring matches with the male guppies even though the guppies outweigh them by about five to three. I think they would make good inhabitants for a small tank close to your desk or chair because their colors are quite beautiful from close up, but end to fade into grey when seen from a distance.
Why does everytime my fry hatch it can't swim and just go at the bottom then the next morning it all died. I used aerator only, with no heater. What should I do.
Hi Rachel, I got 4 of these little guys, there beautiful an hard to find in my local pet stores, had to go out of town for them, will they be ok with some amber tetras I also got 3 of them? Thanks.. 💛💛💛
I thought I was the only one that didn't love CPDs! I had a few a while back. The males are very pretty but I just didn't find them very interesting; they don't school and as you said they're so shy.
any possibility of these being for sale anytime? i have a few (one male, 2 female) from the store i woke at, but we get them pretty rarely. i want to add to the community and potentially get some spawning.
I collected eggs from my 6 CPDs over a month every day or so using the moss dish method. They are housed in a 46 litre bowfront with 5 Pygmy corys. They aren’t always out n about but def not hiding away all the time. I would sit in morning n have a coffee watching them for 25 minutes placing hand near tank glass so they’d get used to someone there. I placed the eggs into a 20 litre fry tank with moss. they simply hatch in 48 hours or so. After 7 weeks I transferred them all into a 60 litre counting as I went, 82. I even kept tally of how many eggs I’d put in, over a hundred. Found 5 dead in the 60 litre over next month which could be just natural passings or some larger picking at smaller. I did massive clean of 60 litre yesterday removing all fish n counting roughly. Approx 69/70 now so a few more had disappeared. I’ve had buyers for all 80 right from the 4 week old fry mark so I’m happy about that for 10$ each, I bought mine for 16.95$ Aussie which is the current store price going. Electricity bill went up almost double over breeding months but the money will cover that. They are roughly at the 10 to 11 week old mark Rachel and most have celestial dots but quite hard to sex them yet. I’m looking for black spot near anal fin but how do I know if poop or black dot? The fins aren’t coloured up enough for that alone to define. I thought the males had a very distinct pale stripe along head n back but a lot of mine do...do the females also? I was hoping to be able to atleast sex some for my buyers incase they with to breed or simply just so there’s not too many men amongst the group. Yes some are darker or paler tummy but still hard to tell. I got my breeding advice from Mark at Marks Aquatics on youtube. Great down to earth English dude, love his relaxed homey videos...not posey like some you get. Any more advice on sexing juveniles would be great Rachel. Water changes are hard with fry as you don’t wanna suck them up so sadly I did not do water changes as often as I would...he seems they could have grown quicker n maybe for healthier. Lisa x
Thank you very much for doing this video! Interesting to learn about all these little guys. They definitely wouldn't be interesting fish in my tank with how much they hide! Didn't realize they did that.
great video and thanks for doing it, i was one of the people that want to see a species spotlight for them and can you do a species spotlight on Dario dario
Love, love, love these guys!!! Do you sell these fish? I got some from a Petco near me years ago and now I'm down to 1. I've looked for them at both local fish stores and the big chain stores and none of them have them now. I saw Lucas had them a couple months ago breeding but they will not be ready till spring at the soonest. My son picked these fish and I came to love them so much! They're one of my favorite small community fish!!! If you do have them for sale I'd love to place an order for them! Please and Thank you! They're so beautiful and a fish that I have come to love so much! Thank you sharing your knowledge with us! I will leave a message through Facebook with my e-mail address so that I can ask you more on finding them. Thank you again!
So sorry I just realized this was an older post. I saw the date and thought it was from 2017 and then saw that it was from 2015. I also found your By Msjinkzd.com also and looked at your in stock list and no CPD. : ( If you know of an online person that does have them.....let me know please!
Im not too sure if you read comments on a video from 3 years ago, but lets try :) My celestial pearl danio eggs just hatched today. When do you think I should start feeding them? And, do the fry eat frozen (crushed) cyclops? and just regular dry fish food (crushed)? Have a great day!
Hello to the past, haha. I begin to feed my fry when they begin to swim. As a start food, I use Paramecium caudatum (you can breed it in a small tank or in a jar, use dry banana peel or several drops of milk - try both to choose the best way for you). Some later I include feeding the egg yolk, Sera micron (you can use spirulina), micro-worms. And after that I begin to feed my galaxies with Dero furcata and Enchytraeus buchholzi. In the US as I know you guys often use the so-called blackworms. Great video, Rachel!
hey Rachel, I love these fish and was interested in getting some to put in with my betta fish in his 5g tank, is this a good or a bad idea? i'd really appreciate a reply, thanks
It COULD work, but they are a fish that is low end of the food chain, so tend to hide if they are not in good sized groups. You could try it, and always have your 60g tank as the backup plan
yeah i'll definitely give it a shot, i love them, thanks again, keep up the awesome work, if i need more info on stuff in the future i'll come to you if thats alright?
Would bettas, khuli loaches, harlequin rasboras, get along with them? Aswell as ghost cats? I plan on getting ghost cats in the future. I assume they'd eat them but its worth asking lol
these are awesome. I'll have to ask my lfs to get some, I also happen to work at my lfs. And I believe you are personal friends with the owners or my lfs , Chris F. ,and Tom O.
+Calyn G I met them when they were in the planning stages of their store! Upstate NY, right? Very cool. Send my regards. I haven't talked to Tom in forever!
Plenty of places! I somehow even managed to buy them through my local mom & pop pet store, where fish aren't even their main focus. Try asking your local fish store if they carry any, or if they can order some for you to buy through them.
Maybe you could do a video on your top nano fish favorites.
I tried to counteract their shyness by getting more and more of them. But I just ended up with 20 hiding fish. :)
+pecktec bwahaha, right? I like adding endler's or Laubuka dadiburjori with them to draw them out.
+Rachel O'leary Would theese guys be okay to be put into a RCS tank with some Sparrow Rasboras. I'm hoping to have some shrimp fry and don't want anything eating them!
+Ryan Hotchin they will eat baby shrimp, with relish
Oh dear! haha will my saprrow micro rasboras? atm they just hide behind my sponge filter and don't really venture out much. (going to get a surface plant so they feel more safe. thanks for the reply!Rachel O'leary

When I first saw these guys in various videos I thought they looked like miniature rainbow trout. Awesome look for a fish.
Can you write out the ideal tankmates since some of the names are difficult and they are less common. Thank you
Hey Rachel! I just bought 10 of them and put them in a cycled, moderately planted 10 gallon with my small but relatively established red cherries. Pygmy hatchets!
what were the names of the fish that you recommend to pair with these? my Latin is a little weak. thanks!
Whate is the best schooling fish. Cooler water fish. Like the zebra. And white clouds. Love the long fin zeba
Will they live in very hard water?
Densely planted back + mid ground with heavy covering of floating plants, dark substrate, dark wood, compatible tank mates of equal size or smaller, and they will be far from shy.
i have such a set up and they are quite social. fluval spec 5..for now.
Spec's are great nano tanks, esp latest revised version with new light unit & some other subtle changes.
I have the older version but I uprgraded the light to a current dimmable 700 lumen output, that works nicely as a replacement.
700 lumen sounds spot on for that sized tank, esp been dimmable.

+John Zimm no. Not very jumpy at all
Sadly I beg to differ! hahaha I lost a poor Galaxy because he jumped but dont think its very common

Whats that soeciaes u say theure found along side u said petroithese rosy or something like that
What do you do when you change their water...i mean whats the whole process to keep these little beautiful fish alive?
curious how you'd think a group of 6 of them would do in a 15g long with 2 bolivian rams, a cherry barb, and 5 endlers livebearers? You think they'll be scared of the rams, or will the endlers livebearers help them feel safe? Thanks

Got it !!!!!! What can I keep with my shrimp that's safe....& schooling
if your goal is breeding shrimp- keep it shrimp in all honesty
Think they'd be okay with a small school of Blood Fin Tetras?
Would 5 be ok for a 4.5 gallon cube tank that is heavily planted and a sponge filter rated for a 20 gallon tank
ihave them since a year and I don't find them that shy , it is true that my tank is well planted

Great video Rachel. Are you offering any of these for sale?
+tommy rosalee Yup! My complete stocklist can be found on my website, msjinkzd.com :)
+Rachel O'leary thanks Rachel! So this would be the danio margaratatus on your stock list, correct?
Yep! Celestichthys margaritatus (formerly Danio)
Would these fish be safe for shrimp?
they will eat baby shrimp, but are a popular choice- though not one I would choose for a shrimp tank
Why does everytime my fry hatch it can't swim and just go at the bottom then the next morning it all died. I used aerator only, with no heater. What should I do.
When the fry are grown out should they be put back in aquarium with parents. Thanks
+Howard G yep. Once they are big enough to not get eaten
I'm so confused because they were housed together in the same tank and under there description online, it said that they are peaceful fish.
My cpd are not shy with ember tetras.
May I ask what did they eat?
can they live in cold water?
Would white cloud minnows be a good tank mate for the CPDs?
Yes
+Awesome St. Cool I have more coming in friday
oh man. i'm pretty stoked about that. i'm more than likely going to be putting in an order in the near future :D
Hi Rachel, I've been to your website and don't see any order form. How do we order from you and find out cost and shipping?

I have 6 zebra danios in a 19 litre tank. Is that okay?
What did u feed them?
Pls do a video on peacock gudgeons, I love keeping them but need more info
Any Spotlights for Strawberry Rasboras? :D
Have you had success with this species in your summer tubs?
+aligpiro yes, many times
Would love to see hatchet fish at some point
Thank you very much for doing this video! Interesting to learn about all these little guys. They definitely wouldn't be interesting fish in my tank with how much they hide! Didn't realize they did that.
never seen this fish before. is this ok with betta and tetras? if its small i like it :)
+FaLLenStormyGod yes
what is the minimum size school should you have these?
i don't like less than 8
ok, thank you!
great video and thanks for doing it, i was one of the people that want to see a species spotlight for them and can you do a species spotlight on Dario dario
Dario dario are awesome so are black tiger dario i want them sooo bad.
+Freddy you will need something smaller than cyclops. Usually rotifers or microworms or even pulverized flake
Alright! And I'll start feeding them as soon as they are free swimming I assume :)
+Freddy yep. They generally go right up to the surface
and i read all the comments, or try to!
Great video, Rachel!
hi are they shrump safe? coz they look really small
sort of- adult shrimp do fine, but they will predate on baby shrimp
thank you! that explains why i dont see any more baby shrimp in the tank
I want some of these so bad but I can only seem to find them online for a ton of $$$$.
I just got some CPDs. Can it be kept with Glowlight Danios Thanks for your info
+Howard G yes, should be fine though the lowlights are way more boisterous
hey Rachel, I love these fish and was interested in getting some to put in with my betta fish in his 5g tank, is this a good or a bad idea? i'd really appreciate a reply, thanks
They can work well with betta, but you wont be able to have a very big group in a 5g, which makes them prone to hiding.
ah right, thank you for replying i really appreciate it
It COULD work, but they are a fish that is low end of the food chain, so tend to hide if they are not in good sized groups. You could try it, and always have your 60g tank as the backup plan
yeah i'll definitely give it a shot, i love them, thanks again, keep up the awesome work, if i need more info on stuff in the future i'll come to you if thats alright?
+Horse sure thing
Awsome little fish! Thanks for the video.
mine isnt shy at all. litterallybgoes to my fingers when i put my finger in the tank
They look like miniature brook trout. Thank you for sharing! I didnt know these are available.
Would bettas, khuli loaches, harlequin rasboras, get along with them? Aswell as ghost cats? I plan on getting ghost cats in the future. I assume they'd eat them but its worth asking lol
I may just get these instead of ghost cats
I've been super lucky with mine! They never really hide, even when I'm fooling around with the tank. Only when I'm doing water changes they hide
Love small fish Like cooler water fish platy zebra rice fish whitecloud can you let me know any more cooler water fish like guppy too
They look like some kind of awesome looking miniature trout
these are awesome.
+Rachel O'leary yes upstate newyork. the shop is doing wonderful
I'm here working now with Tom. He says hello and how have you been?
I there anywhere that has these in stock?
Plenty of places! I somehow even managed to buy them through my local mom & pop pet store, where fish aren't even their main focus. Try asking your local fish store if they carry any, or if they can order some for you to buy through them.
when r u going to do neons?
your info i can trust 100%
Mine are the opposite. Very outgoing little dudes. Watching them spar and spawn is always pretty cool.
I got 5 today for a planted tank, I'm excited to keep this species
Cool. Love the fish.
Nice video 😊
You rock 😎Thank you 🤘
Very beautiful fish
