Prince was not ready, and as a Prince fan I'll thank Michael for this. Because he then, this same year, hired a teenaged Wendy Melvoin to join his band, named them the Revolution, and famously rehearsed them day and night, recording everything, until they were the sharpest band on Earth.

This was absolutely amazing. This was during a time when music was almost spiritual and having all 3 legends, who are no longer with us, was historical. Prince was a hell of a musician.

I love old videos of Michael. He'd already accomplished so much and yet even he knew it was just the beginning. He was finally breaking free from the shackles of his childhood and forging his own destiny. When you see him here you see the joy, the promise, the hunger and remember that he at least got to live out some years without being totally torn a part by evil doers. It's actually kinda sad to me. This was one of the last times Michael could just go to an event and be part of the audience with little fanfare. A few months after this, when Thriller went REALLY bonkers (it was a slow burn after the Motown 25 special but exploded in the fall/holiday season), he basically ascended permanently to a position he couldn't come back down from.
And also evil-doing himself unfortunately. Cycles of abuse.. very sad

We took this talent for granted. I grew up in the 80s. We thought that music like this would always be around. Sadly they’re all gone. I’m glad I got a chance to see Michael and James Brown before they left this earth. I never got a chance to see Prince unfortunately but my parents did. I really miss music and talent like this. 😔

The 80's music generation has yet to be matched. From the 80's rock to the music of Michael Jackson and Prince could be heard going on everywhere. I was so fortunate to have graduated in 1980 and enjoyed going to concerts, and music festivals with these great bands and artist. The special exciting feeling that I experienced is one I have never forgotten. When I hear those songs that were played, they bring back memories that to this day still give me goosebumps. Little did I know how blessed I was to be enjoying and experiencing the greatest music era of all times as a young adult 😎. Music added so much more enjoyment to ANYTHING we did. I was fortunate to have a boss who allowed us to have mp3 players while we worked. I worked there for 30 years because of that and then retired. Once I realized I had been there 30 years I wondered why it didn't seem that long 🤔. It was because of the music. I had enough songs on that MP3 player to last 16 hours. I sang my favorite songs that all had a good memory of my childhood. Or to something I enjoyed as a young adult. Those memories and singing made my day go by so much faster and kept my adrenaline going. I'm so glad I was blessed with that benefit at work and wouldn't trade that enjoyment for another job without music.
I understand you completely. I wish I could hug you. I feel like this from time to time. I was also born in the 80s. We were extremely spoiled rotten. The thing is their music is timeless and we'll always have everything they left for us.

This video was the moment I got to know a person named Prince. Even at this time, I thought he was a comedian. Then one day, I started composing and soon realized that he was the god of songwriting.
He is one of the greatest guitarists ever. It was overlooked because of his many talents. We just expected Prince to be the best at everything.

I LOVE the reaction of James's long time back up singer Martha High at 0:52. Mind you, she is a KNOCKOUT vocalist in her own right and had been performing with James for something like 20 years at this point...and Michael just comes up and nails that note fresh out of the audience. The influence of James Brown is LEGENDARY
It appears to me, although no one else seems to be mentioning it, Prince was supposed to have a loud, distorted guitar as usual. He was a great guitar player. It didn't work for some technical reason so he played it off. To try and save the moment, he took off his jacket and was trying to figure out how to get the crowd going anyway with the skin and claps. Then he simply had enough and exited. I think he is such a pro that not many seemed to figure it out based on these comments. I'm pretty sure Prince was privately devastated later. It would have been a very big moment.

It felt like Prince was sabotaged to me.
Yeah, I think he was expecting the guys guitar to have more overdrive, which would give the sustained notes Prince plays, especially live. You can see him soloing and it's dead quiet. Then he realizes and tries to save it by doing funk chords, which the band went along with, and then he tried to go forward and make the guitar cry but again there was no sustain, so he was hammering the notes but you can't hear it at all (at least on the recording, not sure how it sounded live?). Then he tries to salvage that by busting out a few moves. It does seem like he would have normally been way more into it but was probably annoyed about the guitar, he hated live mistakes. Then I think he thought the lamp was actually anchored down and not so easily tipped, but even saw that as it happened and played it off like he rode it down to the crowd. I feel like he really tried to salvage things several times but the guitar thing threw him off. He probably expected to get a real pop from the crowd with the guitar licks and when it didn't work probably knew MJ got the best reaction of the night. All guessing, but just based off the video and interviews, etc. with him and his studio engineer (they are on youtube) about his perfectionism, etc.
I get the impression that the Michael Jackson bit was pre planned but that they might have called prince up without warning when they realised he was there too - Brown sort of alludes to that. If he knew he would have probably had his own guitar, and like you say the guitar tone really doesn't work for him - you can tell he's trying to play some lead stuff then realises the sound isn't going to work. Incidentally, I wonder if Michael did it on purpose to try and show him up and catch him out cold; they famously didn't get on well

Prince was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He can't say no to James Brown and he can't outperform what MJ just did before him. MJ oozed class and talent, even from this video watching on my phone you can sense the raw talent and charisma of MJ.
