I’m a massive Prince fan and I will NEVER forget one particular child’s reaction to this song: it was back in 2003 or 2004 and I was working as an early childhood educator. I put this song on so the kids could get some energy out. As soon as this 3 year old heard the ‘ooooooh’ at the start she broke out dancing like JAMES BROWN! I was so happy!

I love this album! Best since Gold Experience, and a true return to form. Glad I finally got to see the video, with the internet blackout we didn't see any new videos in the UK past the Gold Exp. :/

I was 11.when this came out. My nutz had just dropped. I remember feeling heat. I remember listening to this at night and next day salivating over girls in class. Thank you Prince!
This is a true story. Prince used to “borrow” his big brother Alfred’s James Brown records. Alfred didn’t like it. Prince’s step father took him to a JB show and put him onstage with JB. He heard the music and saw all of the beautiful ladies and decided that he would be JB one day. In this video, the boy is playing Prince and Prince is playing the JB part.

Prince pays homage to many of the greats lyrically. Moments in his life as a child are given respect visually. The whole video is permeated with past aesthetics melded with the present kind of like he did in Under the Cherry Moon. The guys tap dancing and doing the splits seem to be a shout out to the Nicholas Brothers who tap danced in the thirties. And, of course, the brass, which Prince adopts very strongly during this area goes all the way back to the Jazz era of the twenties and big band of the thirties. This is a showcase of Prince's music knowledge, heritage and his ability to bring it all together. It is top notch brilliant!

When this LP first came out, I actually went into a Prince chatroom to find out whether he was referencing Doug E. Doug or Doug E. Fresh ... lol I was told it was the latter (hey, I'm white, what can I say)
I gave Doug E a call when I was a kid, he didn't answer and to my eternal shame I neglected him!

Why can't I find this song anywhere? I want to add it to my playlist... The first time I heard this sound, I was in the baber shop waiting for my son to get out the chair. MTV or BET was playing on the TV. The video came on and everyone seem to lose their minds. The dude cutting my son's hair stopped and made someone turn this up. Everyone got up and started dancing right in the shop! For about 3 minutes, Prince was in their dancing and singing with us. We lost a good one, y'all!!

To everyone who wondered why Prince disbanded The Revolution...THIS is why. He could have never produced and performed music like this without branching out to discover new artists and musicians. Genius always requires new avenues for creativity.
Totally agree with you on this one, Alexander Nevermind, Now that Prince is gone, stories are being made up about him which are not true. He was a genius who needed more musical freedom, requiring more musical talents and more instruments to play his music (which the Revolution did not have), so therefore he needed new people to play in his band. So this is why he gave up the Revolution and then created the NPG group, and then other bands as his choices in musical styles evolved, where eventually he ended up with the 3rd Eyed Girl Band at the end. Therefore, he kept on changing his choices of bands as his musical styles and choices dictated. He even said that people never signed contracts with him when they played in his bands because he changed his bands pretty frequently, and they were aware of this.
I am not trying to be insulting. But he was not a prince, but a king. Missed and there is a hole in a part of music which this man used to fill. The artist formally known as prince, I will call him King. Rest in power Roger.
