Out&About with Dayv Checks Out Hema Maps’ New HX-2 GPS

- In early-August 2021, Hema Maps released its new GPS Navigation Platform (HX-2).
The HX-2 steps in where HX-1 left off and brings the existing mobile device based app “4x4 Explorer” to a dashboard near you.
The big step forward in the HX-2 when compared to the HX-1 - and even the old ‘Explorer’ app - is the move from Raster mapping to Vector mapping. Simply, Vector mapping allows the user to zoom in and out and stay on the same map platform ie no jumping or vacillating between one map and another and sometimes not doing either well.
Add to this the inclusion of digitised versions of all of Hema Maps’ maps in a manner where you can plot your location, plan future trips and talk about (brag) about past trips and camps.
See where the new HX-2 sits with your needs and enjoy getting Out&About.
Please let me know your plans and thoughts.

Very Helpful. I have just returned from 4 weeks out in The East Pilbara area Hema HX-2 was very good. Well worth the money. I paid $649 at BCF Jandikot WA
Thanks Geoff. Much appreciated. Glad you like it.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful from a genuine (non-commercial) user perspective. With the special member price at BCF and a birthday coming up...I've got my credit card ready! Cheers.
Thanks John. All the best with it and happy birthday. Enjoy
I just got mine yesterday. Pretty happy with it, lots of features and intuitive. Only criticism is it is a bit laggy, but that doesn't really worry me. Hopefully future software updates will speed it up. Overall 8/10.
Thanks Yen. Enjoy!
Cheers mate this was the video I wanted to see youve shown me that it does what they say it does, even though its got a heafty price tag I think it's definitely worth it in the long run
Thanks Outlaw. Yeah it certainly lets you focus on the job at hand. Enjoy.
Thanks mate - great concise review - very helpful!
Thanks James. Very much appreciated. Cheers
I upgrade fron the hn7 to the hx2 best thing I've done . Well worth the money
Thanks Pat. Great to hear. See you out and about some time.
awesome vid, great info. Any problems with crashing or extreme lag. A lot of the reviews state it's not worth it. Love to hear your opinion!
Cheers Lachlan and thanks for the feedback. In my short test I had no crashes. Like the 4x4 Explorer, I think there’s some delay in changing modes and maps - but I believe Hema’s on to it. Any upgrades would be via the wifi. I use 4x4 Explorer on iPad and I’ve learnt more by using it more. But, the out-of-the-box readiness of the HX-2 plus all the paper maps would be a good plus in my view. I hope that helps. Let me know how you go.
@@outandaboutwithdayv thanks mate a lot of help
@@outandaboutwithdayv hey mate, one more question. hav eyou had a chnace to hook a reverse camera up to it. is it possible with the current firmware?
@@LachlanBarclay4wd I understand that Hema is still to get the camera to market. I haven’t asked yet but I’d hope any wifi reverse camera may do the job - not sure.
I personally have hard wired cameras with on-off-on switches to toggle between the car and trailer and on full time or just reverse.
Hey mate thanks for the vid. First time for me. Will def look out for your vids in the future. Question on the HX 2. Does it save your tracks and way-points to be downloaded on personal PC later? We have been using the HN 6 for years and like to save our tracks. We are about to head off on another trip over to the West through central australia (If we are allowed) Thanks in advance. Cheers Rod
Hi Rod and thanks for the encouraging feedback.
I only had the HX2 for a short test period and it was my first Hema unit - so… I’m pretty sure it saves and records as you ask (if you set it up) but I’m not sure on the PC aspects. Although, I’m also pretty sure you can access it from the magical cloud.
My best suggestion would be to turn to Hema’s online training (which I’ve found great) or call the HEMA Maps Technical Support Team on
Phone: 07 3340 0000 - they’re really helpful.
Cheers and see you out there.

Can you follow a track that you have already traveled to return back to your start location?
Hi mate thank you for your review loving my unit so far just a quick question how do you reference tracks?? They have numbers on them like 16, 21 and what not but what is that referencing to???? Pulling my hair out trying to find the answer lol
Thanks guys. Can you send me a screen shot / photo please?
How have you managed to adapt the included mount to the RAM Mount?
The bracket in the box simply unscrews where the ball is. The ball then fixes into the Ram mount. The fit is not too tight as the Hema ball is slightly smaller.
@@outandaboutwithdayv thanks. Do you know if it’s the Ram “B” or “C” size ball that fits the Hema mount?
@@jolenew1272 Hi Adrian. B size - but the Hema ball is a little smaller so you may need to pack it if you’re going off road.
Hema knows about this.
I loved the XH1 but the HX2 was very disappointing i returned it and went for the garmin overlander the HX2 compared to HX1 is definitely not worth the money it has a cheap plastic feel to it i did try it out for a week 😕
I need to check out this Garmin Overlander. I’ve heard lots. However I do know Hema is still working to improve the HX2. Cheers
@@outandaboutwithdayv theres a fue things i love about the garmin its worth a look mate it even feels like quality and the HX2 has a cheap and nasty feel about it and the new explore map sux HX1 explore map was way better but its only my opinion 😉
@@goldcoastdronevision Cheers
Got mine at the Sydney 4x4 show 2022. I find the On Road (Turn by Turn) section to be totally useless as it lags behind and gives instructions 100m after you have passed the turn. It freezes up and you need to stop and re-start it. On a recent trip we turned it off and the wife used google maps on her phone, much better. Some of the features will just turn off if you touch the screen and again lags behind. All things considered I am not happy with it and still waiting for HEMA to answer my questions. In my opinion a total waste of money.
Thanks for that. I understand Hema are quite helpful in this regard. I suggest you ring Tech Support in the Brisbane office and have a chat. Pls keep me posted.
@@outandaboutwithdayv Hey Dayv, finally got onto HEMA. My issues including On Road lag and there not being any maps in the Adventure Maps section is a known issue that effects a lot of the HX2's.The only way to fix it is a Factory reset. The lady took me through the process of the reset and re registering and connecting back to wi-fi. We then had to complete 3 updates. Then it needs to be left on for 15 minutes, shut down, restart and should be good to go. If there are still issues then it has to go back to them to look at. Time will tell.
@@paulsgarage3169 Great to hear. I guess you were dealing with Michaela. Often it’s a matter of simply talking with @hema. I hope it works out for you.
Well after having mine reset to make it work it has yet again failed. No maps and only a blue screen in off road. I think a refund is in order this time and I'll go back to my 10yo TomTom.
That’s a pity. Just give Hema a yell and have a chat. All the best.
The HX-2 is the worst thing I have ever purchased. 1. Cannot find any addresses in on road mode. 2. On road online map update hangs at 50% 3. No forestry roads mapped in Off Road mode nor any mode. 4. Map mistakes in off road mode. 5. Cannot login to Hema Cloud 6. Support just refers you back to the web site. (followed to a tee 6 time no joy) The hema hx-2 is downright dangerous. A fast way to run out of fuel and die in the desert. You will have better luck finding my HX-2 on the road somewhere when I throw it out the window. My old Hema maps app on my old iPhone 7 is 1000 times better. Would be better off with a $30 TomTom ripoff from TEMU. Wish I bought a Garmin.
Slowest thing I have ever owned and is laggy. Stay away or trade in if its to late :)
Sorry to hear Mal. Maybe have a chat with Hema.
Well Dave you must be the luck one got my first one about 18 months ago was not much good from the start sent it back after 6 months got it back after some weeks still SHIT sent it back they said replaced with a up dated one after used it for about a month it failed completely it was not working right strait out the box sent it back After 3 units they agreed on a refund HaHa 10 of February Still waiting for my money ,,,, MICK.
Sorry to hear Mick. Give them a yell to chase it up.
