    G'day Ronny, This is not in our case overkill so please read, we run (4) GPS devices, because were an off-road expedition truck weighing 14 Ton fully loaded we have to run
    1. A dedicated truck GPS, (low bridges, weak bridges & weight restricted roads) 2. A comprehensive up to date Topo GPS, 3. A general town, city etc GPS & 4. my favorite one
    The Ozy Explorer. Thank goodness for a full size truck cab to fit all this crap in.

    I use a $400 10.1" android tablet with Backcountry Navigator and GaiaGPS. I'll often have them both running as sometimes a track will be on one but not the other. For example BCN on the tablet and GaiaGPS on the phone.
    Both are offroad/offline topographic navigation apps for hikers, 4wd'ers etc for android and Apple phones and devices. I also have the programs on an old Galaxy phone mounted on my KTM enduro motorcycle.
    I plan trips on Google Earth by creating routes and POI's, save as a kml file and upload to the two navigation programs.

    Love your input on the GPS device you use. I however use a different software and device. The feature I use most often is planning and uploading new tracks with Google Earth then downloading it to my smart phone and tablet. The track is also backed up on my laptop. New tracks and waypoints are added similar to the way you do on your device. I am able to sync all my devices as others have shared this can be done with your device. Keep up the great work, I really enjoy them. Thanks for sharing.

    Great device! I absolutely love mine. You can get the exoskeleton case and get even more protection. I cut out the back of the exo case to still be able to use the magnetic mount. Cutting the case allows easy swapping between trucks, I even use it in my boat in conjunction with a depth finder. You can extend the awake time so it’s more useful out of the charger. I believe 15 min is the max awake time so no worries about it dying. This also keeps from having to hit all the startup stuff after a quick stop. I also have the reverse camera because of my rear bar. Reverse camera is slightly glitchy sometimes but ok for the most part. Hopefully this helps anyone on the fence about buying one.

    Great video mate, and has come in very handy for me. I have finally got sick of the Hema's very slow acquisition of satellite signals and have been looking to see what is the best replacement. I have both HN6 and HN7 and both have become almost totally useless over time, because they take so long to acquire satellite signals that I am often at the destination before these bloody things start working. And this is with a satellite signal antenna on the roofrack & re-transmitter inside the vehicle (without this, the Hema simply doesn't work in my vehicle - LR Discovery 4). I'm looking forward to seeing how the Garmin Overlander compares. We have a smaller Garmin unit in the wife's car, and it is probably the best street navigator we've ever had. Thanks for the honest reviews.

    My off-road set up is a cellular iPad with ExplorOz loaded. Haven’t had a problem. I use google maps for highway driving. Previously I’ve used mud maps 3 and found it very good. Travelled all over the east coast and south Australia. Both apps have all maps downloaded onto the iPad and are also loaded onto my phone (for backup). iPad has additional functionality (including books for reading and tv/movies) so I don’t see why I’d buy a separate navigation system. Totally agree with carrying paper maps. I also like using paper maps to plan trips. Thanks Ronny.

    Had mine for over 2 years back when they could be had for 700ish$ on special, i am used to Garmin blue charts and assumed it would be based on this no nonsense platform but found out on first use it is android/lynx? based software which was something no one when I was researching mentioned even once (secret squirrel or something).
    Since then, I have warmed up to it quite a bit. Ron is right it never glitches or plays up in any way. Still there is nothing comparable (overall) out there even if I do spend some hours at times finding and transferring new track starts, stops, intersects etc over via typed coordinate input from any other of my desktop mapping options.
    The unit is also slanted toward the blue haired RV crowd to find toilets/well populated major road campgrounds and bakeries/shopping/doctors etc but in the layers behind this is the harder core mapping and gps backend....not as hard core as others but ok for most. It's easy going and would probably buy again unless something even more rounded comes along.

    Hi Ronny i bought a few months ago only used it once , it seams to be reliable which is most important. Tell me something with the track recorder after recording can the recording be used in reverse to return to where you started . Also ronny for those people who don't like those useless windscreen mounts i have a Dmax and i made a bracket from steel sheet metal and mounted the magnetic part of the charging base off the handle you use when pulling yourself up into the cabin using one of the screws which attachers the handle. regards Mark enjoy your video's mate.

  • @1Coolbanana
    @1Coolbanana 2 года назад +9

    I bought one and find it really frustrating because as youve shown, LOTS of tracks are not in it and I cant use it for planning an offgrid trip since so many tracks dont exist.
    Hema maps has turned to rubbish is recent years (which is whats installed) and you cant install any other map sets.
    I find the unit really frustrating, all well and good to create your own but when planning that feature is useless if you dont know its there in the first place.
    Uploading gpx files is a complete headf&*k at best.
    Actually the HEMA installed is so bad, that I find the stock City Navigator and even Toyota maps have more detail and that sucks balls.
    Next, Ill be trying ExploreOz in an ipad as it gets rave reviews, its just an expensive changeover and the only reason Ive stuck with it for now.
    Actually, the suction mount is the best thing about it!

    • @leonkane8240
      @leonkane8240 2 года назад +2

      Sucks balls hey :0) Seriously I feel your pain. A &1000 is a lot to pour into a device like that & I drive for a living. I spent $600 on their push bike trip computer years ago & never solved the glitches in that even when I chased garmin on it. I could of down loaded a phone app that did similar for way less.
      I am over due to buy something decent & if I have to spend a grand, then so be it, but yo don't know what you don't know till you have used the devices for a bit.
      Don't want to spend a grand only to find out I want a divorce months later, that would chew my balls & spit them out! Which reminds me of my former adultering wife.
      I will have a look @ ExplorOz, thanks for the tip.

      Im feeling pretty ripped off about now since no other maps will work and cannot be upgraded to vector maps either. 😞

The on road mode is ok though and it normally isnt too bad for off road trails even in on road mode. When you get to the edge of one map in Off Road mode they take ages to load the next as well. You are obviously are new to the way Garmin devices work... The Track recording is standard on all Garmin Devices, u just get to choose whether all not u visually want to see it. These track recordings and way points u add are only there until u clear them out of your device. If you choose to keep the tracks that you record, then over time as the memory fills up these tracks will be moved to the archive folder within the device usually..
    The Camps that you talked about - You forgot to mention that it as the crow flies (ie: a straight line from your current position) and not the actual road distance. This is important if fuel range is your concern.
    One benefit with these devices is once purchased, generally there is no ongoing costs, unlike what is coming which will probably cost you a ongoing monthly fee, etc...

    When are you getting back to doing more trip videos? Main reason I subscribe to this channel was because of the amazing trips you did, but lately it seems to be all about products and your builds which I understand you need to show because you can’t always be away on a trip but honestly it gets a bit boring and repetitive, especially with the click bait titles.

    I have a Garmin NUVICam (yes, they're now obsolete!)...GPS & dashcam. Magnetic mount on a *LARGE* suction cup for the front window. Internal battery so you can use it off the charger. Has VERY similar features that your Overlander has. Real time traffic data & live weather conditions...it's got it all! Garmin makes some great GPS devices. No arguing that!
    /I'll be sad when she bites the dust someday! 🥹

    Sorry guys but mine went hey-wire. Obviously ended up being a software issue but for two months of chasing up Garmin Support was not acceptable. When they finally came to realize I'd lost my sense of humour, they sent me the necessary downloads & the unit is working again but still flicks into a black screen every now & then. Great unit when its working but can develop killer faults. Oh.! And through this I lost all my recorded information.

    I've got a VMS. It's shit. Takes 5 time's some days to get it working. Just randomly turn off. If you have a destination going, when turning a corner it turns of.

    Hated my Garmin Overlander. Completely useless in Central America unless you are a computer programmer and buy code from a third party… that Garmin doesn’t endorse. The other irritating thing about the mount…you have to power it by their power cord to a cigarette lighter… you can’t use a USB cord
