man this game 10 years old, and look at those graphics, freaking amazing for its time, but if you go back 10 years before that, u have like n64 graphics
I know the comment is already a year old but this game wasn't anything special back in the day, Crysis and Gears of War were already out by this point and made it look pretty dated.
It may not be as demanding, and a little simpler, but honestly portal/tf2's graphics were great too. Since they weren't as detailed, they still look great today IMO
The first time playing the mass effect series especially one was magical. The next thing to come in human evolution should be to allow legal mind wipes because I want that feeling back.
+Shane Stewart I played ME2 first. Ive never been so invested in a game, movie, song or other form of art. The suicide mission was the pinnacle. I simply cant force myself to replay the game again. It was so good, that I know I cant relieve those feelings anymore.

its hard to say this, most of the bioware we all love isnt bioware anymore. theyve all retired or moved on. the current bioware is a poor group of overworked fresh game devs, slaves to EA.
I tried mass effect for the first time yesterday in 2019!! And I gotta say man this game is still amazing. It feels like something that could come out today. Truly amazing!

Jaziel Rivera I first tried to drive it as if it's controls were going to be anything like you would expect controls on a vehicle to be. I still dislike the controls (you have next to no control reversing), but I've gotten to the point where I can carefully and methodically clear the exploration levels without too much trouble.
I disagree. Currently playing ME2 and even though it is technically bigger than ME, the major change in the galaxy exploration has not been a positive experience for me (even though some aspects of the game are better than the first).
+TypicalKHKfanboy You won´t regret it.Maybe the Gameplay on the first one is at first a bit clunky and strange but once you get into it it´s really good as said in the review. And the gameplay in ME2 and ME3 is much better. And the story is really worth it in my opinion :)
I think the reviewer didn't completely understand everything about the game. Sometimes weapons don't fire either because they overheat or because of tech attacks.
Still, the system is somewhat unballenced and it realy needs lots of practice to handle all hero types. KotOR or JADE EMPIRE are much easier in this respect.
And quite making halfassed assumptions. I wasn't fanboying or whining about criticisms. Quit trying to stir crap up by throwing out labels and jumping to conclusions. I was making a valid point about the built in mechanics that cause weapons not to fire. In fact ME 1 is my least favorite of the ME trilogy.
Roger Lynch Never said the system was great. Just pointed out that the weapons not firing aren't necessarily due to bugs. Either way they came up with a better shooting system in ME 2 anyways.
I just bought the whole trilogy for the PS3 with almost no knowledge of the series (the only being the IGN reviews). Do you think I made a good decision?
As a console peasant, I am jealous of you, been playing mass effect 1 a lot and I keep noticing stuttering and frame-rate issues everywhere on 360. They fixed this on the sequel, but even then, the performance is horrid on consoles.
Yeah i played 2 before 1 and I almost stopped playing this. It just seems dated. Once i got a little further i got the hang of it though and the story is still amazing.
inoscopedMLK i can't tell you how many times you randomly get thrown into unexpected firefight just to die in 1 or 2 hits. Or that you forgot to save because there practically no real good auto saving. weapons constantly overheat and if they get too close your character melees them like an idiot. OH god your partners are idiots, they always die every 10 seconds and the only way to bring them alive is with medigels.....which is on a timer by the way.
ionic0 I thought the gameplay sucked for the first few hours, but as you got better guns the reticles became precise and it was a much smoother experience. I prefer the customisations in this one because there was a lot of depth to it. Plus I don't mind the hardship as long as there is a worthwhile payoff at the end, and ME1 delivered that consistently through and through. That ending was priceless and incomparable.
Still the best Mass Effect of them! Playing through it again and loving it! The only major part that is lack from the other 2 is the reworked combat. But the combat in this one is still very fun.
I found the combat in general in mass effect 1 to be more fun and satisfying, but i found the story and character development in the 2nd mass effect to be far better then the first. I liked the first but it was missing a little something. Mas effect 2 had that something but took away some things that made the first so great. So they made it better and not at the same time. I will not elaborate further as i don't wish to spoil the games for others but i consider both mass effect 1 and 2 to both be great in there own ways. I definitely recommend starting with the first as you will be greatly in the dark and not notice references to the first game. :D Also, its a pity this review was done on the xbox version. I had a far better time with the PC version mostly because all the technical problems listed in this review are non-existent for the PC.
agreed, the actual customization and upgrades in both the guns and armor was way better then anything that came after. I get they wanted to shave off some of the unnecessary stuff but they went to far when they completely removed it from ME2. The series would be alot better if they'd have kept that deeper system
I used to wrongfully believe it was a generic sci-fi 3rd person shooter, and ignored it for years. Decided to give it a chance a month ago, and i cannot find the right words to express how amazing the game is,i can't manage to explain it to people, it is simply mindblowing. Finished it in under a week and almost instantly started the second one and played pretty much nonstop for 10 days. Mass Effect as a whole is a true gem of our time, not just as a game,, everything from the music, to the lore, the characters, the story. It's the type of game you wish you had no memory of it, in order to experience the magic of it for the first time once again. Back when the videogames industry was pure enough that games were made with passion and not greed for money.
Almost finished with Mass Effect 1 (Yeah, I am late in the Mass Effect hype compared to everyone else)...I didn't like the side quests so far though. :/
+Matoro Zeliph what makes Mass Effect 1 so great because it hit hard on RPG . HARDCORE Renegade or Light choices. I mean, when you go dark.. its DARK. You do stuff that makes you go... damnnn.. savage. Mass Effect 2 was legendary for it's action combat . 1 and 2 are so different yet epic in their own right
I JUST GOT THE ENTIRE TRILOGY AND ITS THE BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMB!!!!!!! I SUGGEST THAT U ALL GET IT TOO AT GAMESTOP OR EBAY!!!!! EXCELLENT RPG!!!
@RozzatheGreat you can actually buy a add on called Genesis "This digital comic back-story was created by BioWare and Dark Horse comics. The 15 minute interactive experience allows you to make the key choices of Mass Effect 1. This retelling will also let you have those choices reflected during Mass Effect 2. "
So I decided to get EA Access cause why not? And ended up getting a couple free games. The Mass Effect series being some of the games. I heard the 2nd one was the absolute best. So I REALLY want to play that. But at the same time, I don't want to just skip the first one due to the story. I don't wanna be overwhelmed Because I Skipped the first game. And from my own personal experience, ME1 is amazing! Story wise. As a FPS player, I struggle with the combat. And I know I'm not bad with 3rd person games. I've played Gears of War, Dead space, and Metal Gear without much Hassel. So I can say while the game is interesting, the gameplay kills it entirely. I don't blame the game. I just blame the age of it. It's old and I'm sure more recent titles are much better.
Just wondering where did you buy it from? I have been told to buy the first two on steam and the third one from Origin. I can't find anything online but my friends were telling me it's worse to buy all three from Origin.
Leaderofbatz I played the Steam version, I think there's no difference between the two. The game doesn't have gamepad support BTW, you should download the gamepad mod, it works like the 360 version.
Real pity what they did with the planet exploration as the trilogy progressed. Sure, it was far from perfect and fairly clunky and annoying at times but they should have improved the system instead of just dropping it in favor of probing Uranus in ME2 and then dropping even that to just have the completely stripped down system they had in ME3.
@XJackLawd7 It doesn't matter. The game is a personal narrative slash action role playing game. The player can choose to stick with the default stock look, or personalize their character the way they want him to look. That character then passes through all Mass Effect games with the very same look. I fail to see how personalizing the characters countenance impacts the relationship of players connection to the game. How the player wants to experience the game is through their choices alone.
@Themastercode123vWell I guess that works too. If you haven't finished Mass Effect 2 then pause it until Mass Effect one is done, also then you can transfer your save game over to Mass Effect 2 giving you a more personalized game.
This game is amazing, easily the best in the series, and quite possible has my favorite sci fi setting of all time. It just feels so right. It’s a bummer BioWare took a nose dive after this and dragon age origins.
@heroranger With Mass Effect 3 on the way, I suppose now would be a really good time to get into the series. At least, that's what I want to do as soon as I'm done with StarCraft and both Baldur's Gate games (well, that's where I got the whole ME idea from).
The mass effect series were one of the few games that actually awed me while I was playing them. Definitely getting the 3rd one when it comes out, no matter the price.
@AwesomeNnja54 just curious why was the first one so bad compared to 2 havent played either and trying to decide if i should start from the beginning and is one needed as much as ppl say?
@MetalShin0bi high five dude ! i felt the same way and bought mass effect 1 and 2 yesterday .. the only fail i had is that i bought one on xbox360 and the other is on ps3 and now am wondering if i can take save files from 360 to ps3 cause i heard story decisions from 1 are carried through 2
My god, it's £4.99 on Amazon in the UK right now for PC. Anyone who hasn't already got it should really buy it. I've never been good at sticking to long games like this, I bought this game a little while after it came out and I just keep coming back to it. Love the setting and story, it really makes this game just so incredible.
@MetalShin0bi I'll have to agree with your statement because I just realized I have both games with all the story dlc and I just realized I'm still on the first one after forgetting about it for awhile. I'd have to say that ME1 is definately a good choice to start at.
I've got a decent rig. I like running things on medium to high with at least 1920x1080 and 60 FPS. Overwatch and Batman Arkham Knight are the only games I have some problems running that way. I do tend to play a lot of releases that are a few years old at least.
I know! And the first normandy was way more detailed, with lights an little details everywhere on the ship. It was awesome and much bigger than the newer ones too!
@LoryuoRaioneru I just feels it develops the squad that you will carry over to the next game, and you find out lots of things about the Reapers. You also find out that Harbinger is planning to take over the galaxy. I just feel it is not filler, and maybe has more of a point than the first one and more things are going on.
@xXAMDMXx1 Yeah, I noticed I did explore a LOT more in ME2 and over a span of about 2 1/2 weeks I had about 23 hours of gameplay. I guess I just didn't focus as much on the story on ME2.
@darkshadow2017 no you wanna get both games on the same platform so your save data carries over from the first game in mass effect 2. They're gonna do the same with mass effect 3 as well so either get all the games on xbox 360 or on the pc. The ps3 version of mass effect 2 is full of glitches and bugs anyway.
Hi guys. I just wanted to know something about 360 games in general, since I'm a newcomer to this console. Do games that have bugs and technical issues, such as Mass Effect 1, receive patches via Xbox LIVE? That would be really awesome, because I know Mass Effect is an outstanding game and it would be nice to play it bug-free.
@Splashy151 Playing as a soldier while using krogan and talia with their specific powers. Also trying to be a paragon on just about every situation just in case somebody can be seen again in the next. Doing a bit of a power playthrough but I am enjoying it and probably gonna do some side stuff and check it out. Elevators are okay and mako is fine with me I just wish I had something to tell me where i'm going sometimes.
@AxleTrade There's no or. The point in the Mass Effect series is that you play as the same character, and your choices and actions from each game in the trilogy carry over to your next. Do yourself a favor, even if you can't BUY the games, you must play this game before Mass Effect 2, before Mass Effect 3. Make sure to get all DLCs, too, for a full experience. It's worth it.
@XJackLawd7 You're not making any sense... The player chooses their characters background/history as well as the class. The story adjusts itself to your characters history and reputation after you decide who you're going to be and will continue to adjust throughout your game play experience depending on what decisions you make.
Is the Mass Effect series good? From what I've seen of this review and of the second game, it looks pretty good. Also, how good is Bioware's other series, Dragon Age? If anyone can reply, thank you for your kindness. :)
@TheXtraGuy well i decided i wanted to get it on ps3 cuz i hate pc controls and i dont own an xbox so not much choice really i was just wondering if i should of played through mass effect 1 before and i have seen my friend play mass effec 2 on ps3 and i didnt see any gltiches
Who is here after they announced the remaster
man this game 10 years old, and look at those graphics, freaking amazing for its time, but if you go back 10 years before that, u have like n64 graphics
I know the comment is already a year old but this game wasn't anything special back in the day, Crysis and Gears of War were already out by this point and made it look pretty dated.
Crysis only looks good in Ultra, most PCs back then couldn't play it at Ultra. And GoW? Seriously? It looks dull and grey. Try harder.
It may not be as demanding, and a little simpler, but honestly portal/tf2's graphics were great too. Since they weren't as detailed, they still look great today IMO
If you mod it, in a lot of ways the graphics still hold up.
Crysis was superior at any settings.
I will never forget the feels I got when I first beat the original Mass Effect
The first time playing the mass effect series especially one was magical. The next thing to come in human evolution should be to allow legal mind wipes because I want that feeling back.

Genuine enthusiam - I agree.
Anger and criticism - Damn IGN! Inquisitive - Why the bad jokes on the Elcor?
Mass effect is my favorite trilogy ever.
is it good without the dlcs?

awkward pause during talking? I haven't come across that.
You kidding me? The characters in Mass effect show no emotion when talking. They look like mannequins a lot of the time lol.

I grew to hate the Mako with a passion by the end of the planetary exploration side missions.
Even though, all professional critics are thrilled by this vihicle and also the Let´s players as recently MR.(CHRISTPHER)ODD. I agree. The physics are totaly unreal. In a game like JUST CAUSE it doesn´t matter but here where a pseudo realistc environment is the aim, WHY?. LP PLAYERS like TEFKAL (German) simply drop those scenes often out of their shows because it is always the same simply
After 3 playthroughs of the series, I still don't know how they even fit in the Mako in the first place.

The music and exploring was just great at the time
I think the reviewer didn't completely understand everything about the game. Sometimes weapons don't fire either because they overheat or because of tech attacks.

I played Mass Effect 1 on the 360 and a PC, and i had issues on both of them, so idk what you're talking about
I also play on the PC. I only suffer from sudden 1-2 sec freeze during fire fight. but nah im good
if you have issues running this game on a pc then obviously youre using a rock to play it on, I have my settings all the way up and run it flawlessly
I'm playing for the first time in 2020, Wrex's character model is super impressive looking.
The controls suck ASS, if you've played mass effect 2 or 3 before this you're going to be throwing your controller.

Koko the Arabian no it wasnt though.
Koko the Arabian 1080p 60 fps :p
Real pity what they did with the planet exploration as the trilogy progressed.
Sure, it was far from perfect and fairly clunky and annoying at times but they should have improved the system instead of just dropping it in favor of probing Uranus in ME2 and then dropping even that to just have the completely stripped down system they had in ME3.
@XJackLawd7
It doesn't matter.
I never played Mass Effect. Should I?
GamingUniverse i'm a new player and has just bought the whole series (1-3) i'm not even halfway through the first but oh my god it is fun
Yes.
No play Dragon Age it's way better
Yes just get it
pc masterrace
The ending, and the vigil dialogue was never topped in 2 and 3.
This game is amazing, easily the best in the series, and quite possible has my favorite sci fi setting of all time. It just feels so right. It’s a bummer BioWare took a nose dive after this and dragon age origins.
Drinking game: take a shot every time he says "Mass Effect". :P
not old enough
ben reed isn't everything a joke
ben reed LOL! Look at the one that's talking.
ben reed -_-
IGN, you *don't* use custom character models for reviews, much less the horrible freakshep you guys made.
FuzedBox LOL
@heroranger With Mass Effect 3 on the way, I suppose now would be a really good time to get into the series. At least, that's what I want to do as soon as I'm done with StarCraft and both Baldur's Gate games (well, that's where I got the whole ME idea from).
The mass effect series were one of the few games that actually awed me while I was playing them. Definitely getting the 3rd one when it comes out, no matter the price.
LMFAO!
80% of these “technical issues” are console related Looool
What happened to this guy he was a really good reviewer?
He left about 5 years ago
Love the setting and story, it really makes this game just so incredible.
what should I buy guys? this one or the second one? I need your opinions
Back 14 years later
Cannot believe it's been 12 years. Had to rewatch this after the official announcement that we're getting a new ME title that just started production.
Meh, who cares. BioWare is a shell of its former self. It will be garbage
@@GeorgeZimmermen imagine crying to a 5 month old comment

@Daimen555
if you get mass effect 1 you can download it onto mass effect 2 which decisions you make
@MetalShin0bi I'll have to agree with your statement because I just realized I have both games with all the story dlc and I just realized I'm still on the first one after forgetting about it for awhile. I'd have to say that ME1 is definately a good choice to start at.
@Persason i have to play the first DLC before mass effect 2?
@gibsonz0 will i be able to keep my items in the second game though?
On a decent rig in 2016 with everything cranked up to the max it actually looks pretty good.
Clyde Marshall but can it run on a shitty rig
Yes, but how well? Most older games can run on what we would consider sub-par rigs today.
But running and running very well and nice looking are two different things.
Clyde Marshall I just want the game to run at playable frame rate
I've got a decent rig. I like running things on medium to high with at least 1920x1080 and 60 FPS.
Overwatch and Batman Arkham Knight are the only games I have some problems running that way. I do tend to play a lot of releases that are a few years old at least.
@ratchet1235 im thinking about playing ME 2 but should i play the first part before the second?
Who’s here after legendary edition announced?
I played the X Box 360 Version and there were few framerate drops or other issues such as bugs or oddities
They better be working on those patches now.
I know! And the first normandy was way more detailed, with lights an little details everywhere on the ship. It was awesome and much bigger than the newer ones too!
@LoryuoRaioneru
I just feels it develops the squad that you will carry over to the next game, and you find out lots of things about the Reapers.
Currently having my first playthrough with a texture mod. This game really holds up.
I have never played Mass Effect and am wondering if I should get the Mass Effect trilogy bundle at gamestop?
@mendeskt2 agreed and u can see when your powers are recharged which is very helpful for a adept
im planning on starting this series too with me1 because that me3 trailer looked sick
Is mass effect 1 worth getting with mass effect 2 out now? And is there a game of the year edition for mass effect 1? Please respond thanks
There's just a level of immersion not seen with later Mass Effect games.
The video quality is insane for 2007!
Not really
2007? That was when Blu Ray and HDDVD battled it out. 2007 was WELL into the high def era.
@AxleTrade There's no or.
@XJackLawd7
You're not making any sense...
I feel physical pain looking at your shepard
if u have the settings turned up, half the issues disappear
