Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted made a recent appearance on the Let There Be Talk podcast with Dean Delray and opened up on his former bandmate drummer Lars Ulrich. While Lars receives a lot of criticism for his drumming abilities and rightfully so, especially in more recent years, Newstead defended his former bandmate and gave his thoughts on what aspects of Lars is often overlooked by the public. Newsted would state
"He's way ahead of you in most things, I promise you that” adding ‘the depth of this guy, his foresight, his comprehension of what the hell was going on when he was 21, 22, 23. Seriously? So if he can't play the same fill as Dave Lombardo or whoever the you pick for today, so what?. Look at the scoreboard, motherfucker. Do not talk about that guy. He's way ahead of you in most things, I promise you that - I promise you." "If we wouldn't have had him and his ability to anticipate, to predict, to know geography, to understand what country and what city and what did what at what time and all this stuff, no way Metallica would be what they were. He would go on to defend those who claim they could do Lars job adding that musicians have a lot of demands on their career outside of music including dealing with the business of a band adding
No way! So you need to get ahold of yourselves because there's way more to it than just being able to hit a snare drum."
Last year Newsted revealed he thought Enter Sandman was and i quote ‘corny’ and was not fully convinced the group should do the ballad nothing else matters during the making of the black album revealing to Metal Hammer his favourite track off the album was sad but true while also adding
"I struggled with 'Nothing Else Matters;' I knew it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - it was undeniable - but I was kinda scared of it, to be honest, because I still wanted 'CRUNCH!' 'Sandman' I thought was kinda corny, honestly. The beautiful thing was that we all sat in the room together and played it out, 70 takes of 'Nothing Else Matters.' After a while, you're too close to it. 'How much more delicate can I make it?'" he recalled.
"It's crazy I've just realized this," he continued. "Our softest song ever took down the biggest walls to allow our hardest songs ever to penetrate the world. When it was No. 1 in 35 countries in one week, and seven of those countries we hadn't even been to yet? Dude, that doesn't happen to a band who go, 'Die! Die!' most of the time."
A few weeks ago the bassist announced he was reactivating his self titled band for a one off show, their first concert in nearly a decade. The four piece group would play from 2012-2014 before calling it quits. Let us know your thoughts on Lars Ulrich. I’ve always thought he was a brilliant business guy and a visionary for arranging music. A rare win for Geography Majors
Jason sticking up for his friend. Respect.
Well, boy do I feel dumb. Only if I’d known how well versed Lars was in geography. This changes everything.
As I was listening I thought "what the fuck does that have to do with anything?" Lol Jason trying to stay on good terms with them because I'd imagine they are gonna do a AJFA 40 year tour and he wants to be a part of it.
Now if only Jason told us about Lars's cooking skills, my life would be complete.
Pretty sure he meant in terms of being worldly, awareness of current events and how that plays into his decision making for the band. Because it seems to have worked out for them.

In most bands, if you're looking for the cool one, hang with the bass player. They're always all right.
Lars does get a bunch of crap. I know he's not the greatest drummer in the world. But he doesn't need to be. He's a pretty decent drummer that does what Metallica needs him to do. A lot of what makes him important to Metallica, is his musical ear. When Kirk was writing the rift for Enter Sandman, he played it for Lars first. Lars was the one that helped Kirk crafts that riff. He told him to play the opening part 3 times, and then do the answer back. He does a lot of those things musically from Metallica.
Lars is a composer. he's maestro
@@sulistyorini2335 LMFAO...drummers don't compose, unless they play an instrument. Lars cannot play guitar buddy.

And then Lars lowered the bass to non existent on and justice for all. Ahead of his time, or dick move?
Jason has no balls, no dignity. The greediest of the 4 greedy Metallipigs.
Dick move,I think
Ahead of his time. Justice was a top seller!
@@kcb5336 It was a top seller because he lowered the bass?
Very sound logic.
The success had nothing to do with James's tunes, his playing and his vocals, huh? It all came down to Lars, according to you...
@@kcb5336 no, truthfully it's one of their worst produced albums. And that's saying something, because St. Anger and Death Magnetic have really loud drums and are fighting the loudness war. But, Justice is one of the only albums were Metallica doesn't sound like the mighty Metallica. If you listen to any of those songs live where you can hear the bass, they sound heavy. Not so much on the recorded album. It sounds hollow, and has way too much echo and reverb.

Lars was the hero of many young players in the day....some of those young players now are doing great things themselves but without Lars, its possible no them.
Right on, Jason 👍
I completely understand, and I agree. Although he may not be the best drummer, you can’t ignore the other aspects of a musician, and he definitely has other strengths. Plus, Metallica wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for him.
Plus, someone has to be the whipping Post, Dave Mustain isn’t around, so I guess it’s Lars next on the list.
Definitely doesn’t do himself any favors with the way he chooses to dress himself
"and rightfully so", id love to see this guy play drums.
glad someone is sticking up for him. Especially surprising after what the band did to Jason when he was in Metallica. Never had a problem with Lars' drumming, most people just want to jump on the cliche bandwagon about him
Even after all that mistreatment, all that frustration and pain, he's still sticking up for them.
I will admit I was never the biggest fan of lars drumming however as I got older I revisited the Metallica albums and really started paying more attension to what he was playing and how he was playing it and as amazing as Dave Lombardo, megadeath drummers and charli benotie are lars has the ability to play fills and rhythms that I doubt alot of metal drummers would think of playing so the criticism people give him is unfair
I heard he Lars was great at hazing and bullying new members as well.
When it comes to making so-called ‘friends’ or a ‘brother’ even, as miserable as he possibly could for every day together on tour, they say Lars was really ahead of his time.
❤❤❤❤
I know im gonna get shit for this but whatever... Lars is a genius actually, the dude made Metallica what is today, from music production, composition, publicity, the tours, etc... The guy has been always involved in pretty much everything in the band and made It insanely succesfull...
Actually they took material from Dave Mustaine, got big and haven't made a good CD since 1991.

Jason has my respect for sticking up for his former bandmate, and it shows that he's a true friend. But the question I have is would Lars have said the same thing if it was the opposite?
Watch the podcast this quote was from, lars is the only one that calls jason regularily to see how he is doing.
Love how the best defence of Lars drumming skills is a nonsequitur.
Lars is awesome! Let's put aside that he's my heartbeat since i'm 6 yrs old, but he is intelligent, knows the right people, knows how to deal with the right people, has a feeling for doing the right things at the right time. I think if Metallica wouldn't be that big, he would have a big company or would be the CEO of a really big player! And... I Love his style how he plays Drums. It's self teached, and if something doesn't work as he wants to, he tries for hours and hours until it's good enough for him. And he has high expectations in himself and all people around him. And not to forget... He is such a beauty...
Nice try, Lars.

hAHAHAHAHA
I understand Lars has hearing loss. But his attitude is what kills me.
He ain't Neil Peart, but he ain't exactly Ricky Rocket either.
The thing is, Lars' playing was pretty bad in the 00s, and the first half of the 20-teens. Around 2015, i noticed a change. He suddenly has improved a lot! He's very tight, doesn't really speed up very much, doesn't do a ton of unnecessary fills, and the fills he DOES do, he does well!
I was expecting massive amounts of shit talk. Nice Jason!
Jason is back-pedalling ....Enjoy the taste of those boots?
Why do you refuse to use the past tense correctly?
Amongst the local bands in Detroit, Lars was known as Lars the Mooch. Moocher off of everybody. Lol.
I can see that
I challenge any of Lars' outspoken critics to accomplish what he has.
It's easy and fun to always dunk on Lars, especially during the whole Napster thing. But when push cane to shove Lars hired lawyers on behalf of BEATTALICA so they could get the rights to use the Beatles material and record their parody album. You never hear about that. He didn't have to do that. He didn't have to let them use the Metallica part either. But he helped out some tribute band in Wisconsin make thier parody album
"Oh by the way he's always hungry"
Lars was always the more willing front man for Metallica. But look. He was always the drummer of one of the the worlds most influential metal bands of all time…is he a flashy drummer like xyz? No. But he’s played on some of the most heavy, insane songs ever put to wax! He writes and arranges right along side James on most all Metallica songs. Dudes paid his dues. I still don’t think him or James treated Jason like the should have, but Jason is good with it, so that’s it. Dude paid his dues. That’s all that needs to be said.
I started to respect Lars when he faced his monsters (no pun intended) on that Metallica documentary. He faced Mustaine in person, he went to see Jason's band playing, he admitted that Metallica didn't have that kind of passion anymore and most of all: he faced James...
If I had to guess, James spent his entire life avoiding conflicts, letting things get worse to the point of becoming snowballs of resentment or escaping reality through booze (he used to write songs to let it out until "Reload") so communication becomes very tiresome if my guess is correct.
Lars is still pompous, lazy and petty but there's no doubt he's the most alive on that band, humanly speaking. Apparently, he doesn't mess up the tempo on purpose to screw James while they're playing live, at least... he just messes unintentionally lol
I read that as..."He faced Mustaine in Prison..." lol. My bad!!
Lars is the reason you dont join a band a drummer started.
Is that why your band sucks? Or is it simply your abilities?
Yeah all their success really sucks...
@@adamfindlay7091 their success has nothing to do with lars

Good of you to stick up for him Jason but i've never heard anyone criticize Lars geography knowledge. He'd probably be good at math too..if he could count
Feel sorry for any bass player for having to try to work with "Bam Bam".
Yaba daba doooo...
I'll probably get flack for saying this, but Lars was absolutely right when he stood against Napster and other file-sharing, music downloading sites. He did so mostly by himself, and received a ton of personal criticism for his effort, as he literally became the face of opposition to pirating music. It was a very unpopular stance at the time, but Lars stood his ground. Ironically, the vast majority of his fellow artists agreed with him privately, but wouldn’t support him publicly, fearing the backlash. Lars could very well be a douchebag, but he’s not a pussy. He works hard and expects to get every dollar that he earns. I respect that attitude. He’s also a pretty decent musician. No, I'm not his publicist, a relative, nor even a Metallica fan.
I always liked Lars because he was organic in his drumming not something a machine can do. He would feel the music, not just do mechanical movements. He would say that he likes Sad But True the most because he can play it differently every night based on how he feels. But Lars back in the 1990 was a beast. People have no clue. Cunning Stunts concert from 1997. Brilliant stuff. People have no clue what they are talking about.
Where’s Sid?
maybe Lars should have just been the best manager ever then
Whoa! And I agree 100%. Without Lars and James, Metallica would not be a juggernaut. Lars is a business man!
Just wish he liked bass
Perfect drummers usually suck the life out of songs. Lars is alive and imperfect, but don’t get me wrong, he’s also a technical beast. At least in his prime. And more importantly; his beats were WaY ahead of their time for 80s metal. Lars is incredible in my opinion.
Are you in those marijuana pills again?
@@colinjones4686 LMAO !!!

Always loved Newstead and 100% agree.. Most musicians don’t even know what they don’t know. Clueless what’s actually involved
Newstead is back-pedalling BIGTIME. How to those BOOTS taste?
i have played drums forever…Lars is simply a hard rock drummer playing in a metal band. Not a huge deal. He would have fit better in a band like Sweet
I’m not a drummer but I never thought Lars was/is a bad drummer. To all you pros, what is bad about him?
He prides his style like Phil Rudd’s from AC/DC. He was a different type drummer when they started, more busier behind the kit.
His timing can be abit off at times and that tends to make his fills sound abit sloppy. I'm not complaining though, he still plays and writes his own music. Plus Master Of Puppets Ride The Lightning and Justice For All are pure classics.
@ stuart riefe: Lars sucks live.
@@rs4453 Lars doesn't write music...he doesn't play guitar. When will people figure that out? James writes the riffs.
@@markusaurelius777 He arranges the songs which counts as writing. For example, the Sandman riff was written by Kirk Hammett but was played different to what's on the album. Lars rearranged the riff , and that's what we hear on the recording.
Lars is the most important person in Metallica period. Somebody else drumming it wouldn’t of sounded right. It fits. Haters are going to hate.
Hahahahahaha LMFAO...Are you dumb? guitars write songs and lyrics..NOT DRUMS.
my theory is that either james is playing drums on the first 4 albums or session musicians, the triplet rolls and some totally technical stuff has never been performed live because lars cant play it, live lars is great, live and wild his drumming is loose and cool, but on a technical level its dumbed down, i just cannot believe he is drumming on those first 4 albums
I don't think they had the money to ALSO hire a session musician, at least for the first three records.
Thing is. When making an album, you can do it/hit it until it’s right. Can’t do that live. So, when making albums Lars is drumming better than he is able to when playing live. No need for session players…..
I’m sorry to say that that theory doesn’t hold up and It’s indeed Lars Playing them. Lars in studio is particular with his drumming, so much so that he’ll do multiple takes until he get them right, or if there is a take with a particular part that he likes, he’ll have that edited in. Lars in studio and Lars Live are different because he hardly ever plays one to one with the studio recordings by choice, not that he can’t do it. As well as Lars has a particular feel and Sound to him that can hardly ever be replicated by someone else, much less James.

Lars used to be really good....then he just sucked ass. Still does live.
