Exactly you are right i loved Metallica and when i was in my 15-25's i really want to be lars he was my hero loved his music and drums very basic but in perfect time, i agree you don't need to have 1000 piercings or tatto's to be a real Rockstar he kicked ass back and still kicking please don't disrespect Lars, as a matter of fact we now have shitty music thanks to napster at the end he was right. We people dissposed Rockstars like nothing, time moves on for everyone of course Lars knows he can't play like a teenager anymore he i'm sure feels bad about it. So i wish Dimebag was here still playing with Fucking Pantera and Phil with his now shitty voice and all the band mates fat and old but i will be more then happy to pay for a concert and yo hear them again Even if the are slow and old, by the way i will see them un Sandy Fucking ego and i will enjoy the moment i am 37 now.
iBallisticPancankes - You must be young... in the 90s, Metallica was just the shit! For me, as I'd say a lot of other people, came when Lars starting throwing MAJOR temper tantrums that people were stealing his music from the internet. Lars was the biggest, most childish spearhead of this whining. Even though, I've bought their music on: 1. LP (aka vinyl, aka record) 2. Cassette 3. CD 4. And now MP3 again? How many times should he get paid for the same songs? Is $80M net worth not good enough for him? He really needs another $20 buck from me??
Metallica has always been my favorite band . I enjoy following news about them. I think it's great how they tour now in spurts. Health & family is important.
I am 48 and have several tattoos. Lars' remark about just eat coal is spot on for those who don't have them. There's a Dr. Seuss cartoon that talks about just be yourself and not follow trends. I get that, but I didn't get tattoos for anybody else but me. I get wierd looks from people sometimes. That's okay. I put myself in that situation. 20 years ago I would have been upset about it but now I don't care what people think. My wife doesn't have tattoos but will help me sometimes on designs for the next one. Not liking tattoos is cool, but having them is cool too. Just don't judge a book by the cover. Peace out folks. ☺
I'm 48 , no tattoos. Since 25 been looking like Michelangelo David statute. Now people give me weird looks like how come your body has no any ink ? As Nobody cares if you have tattoos
*Koolagin* - Old man? I'm 55 and have a full head of hair. I know guys in their 60's with hair you wouldn't believe! I'm pretty sure it's all hereditary.
Maybe you didn't know this but for people that were listening to them already in 90-91 he was already balding since back in the day, we could already see his bald spot on the forehead
Mad props to Lars(and Metallica) for changing up their set list while they're on tour to keep touring fans happy! I didn't know that. I've seen them twice (in Denver) and they kicked ass each time!
I've always enjoyed watching interviews of Lars this dude is always crack me up is quite the character in no matter how you feel about Metallica he's a pretty epic drummer.
My dad was born in 1934 and him growing up in the 40s and 50s says that anybody that had a tattoo back in that time was considered a criminal or someone of low morals
I mean, my grandpa served in the army sometime in the 40's or 50's, and has ONE on his right arm, but has NEVER had the ink done-up (maintained it), and it was a thing he got because he was in the service. As I said in my comment (that wasn't a reply to anyone else, just a comment on the video), I can understand veterans/marines and sailors that get tattoos. Getting them just because "it's art" or as a fashion anymore, is just stupid as hell.
I think soldiers had them as their profession was being a badass but at the same time especially then they were very respected people. Back then no one really saw soldiers as low lives since they selflessly served their country. That is the way it should be with our soldiers now.
TheQueenSpider dangerous thing...is that people are in control of traditions...and those in control of them...normally don't follow them...but it is a way to kind of play Simon says with the people without the people realising it...that is a very dangerous thing since we're u aware if that fact...
J Guy too me tattoos are for the people that arent getting the attention their looking for so they gotta start drawing on themselves.. kind of lame if u ask me
TheQueenSpider I never looked at it like that I always wanted to have a tattoo but never had the money to food is more important than a tattoo in my opinion but I have always felt uncomfortable that I didn't have tattoos because every one I know has them I've always been proud of being different never dressing a trend I was using different colours in my hair way before it was a trend the problem with tattoos today a few people get them and don't think about the meaning of the tattoo people who have tattoos aren't trying to prove something to most people a tattoo has real meaning getting though hard times a memory of a loved one my first tattoo would be of my dog who saved my life when my ex husband tried to kill me he also helped me through depression once he's gone I want something I can look down at when ever and where ever I want especially when I am having a hard time
I don't have any ink on me but there is a differance between tattoos and tattoos, it's like comparing a 3 year olds painting in kindergarden vs Mona Lisa, two very different things but at the end of the day both are paint on a piece of paper.
So many triggered people on both side of the argument. Tattoos arent even about conformity or non conformity anymore. Typically someone who gets a tattoo now a days doesn't say "im gonna get this tat so i can be unique and different!" Its not even an thought. Some people like the way it looks and others dont. Simple as that
Mr. sting ray Thank you!! Yes! When I get mine I know exactly what I want and why I want it. I've never just went ans got one just to do it. I've thought about mine for awhile. I have 13 and plan on more.
Correct. That line is just one of many cliche anti tattoo lines like "what about when you're old?" as if everyone without tattoos looks amazing when old and wrinkly
@@piro2k Maybe it's because you're a fucking pussy? That would be my guess after reading your little article. If you're a fucking pussy , you'll be a fucking pussy in 1820 or 2020.
Some people think similarly to me in that they love the idea of tattoos BUT get bored with things quickly. I don't like to have the same windows wallpaper for more than a few days. Getting a tattoo no matter how cool would eventually bore me and I would want a change just not possible with tattoos. If they could be reliably and thoroughly removed without issue sure but with the current tech? Nah id be afraid of getting bored with them and then resentful.
Lars doesn't have tattoos because he's a real man; he has skill and talent to attract attention, he doesn't need to alter his appearance to get very shallow, short term attention.
I give props to Metallica for going this long as one of the foundations of metal. Still, considering Maiden are all around retirement age and still CRUSHING at the same speed, and in the same key, unbelievably, they are the benchmark of long-lasting dedication. I saw them a week ago, and aside from a few wrinkles and Bruce's grey hair, time hasn't slowed them down at all. Nicko is 67, for God's sake.
I’m not even a Maiden fan, but I saw them at MSG a few years back and was simply blown away. Those guys rocked harder than any band I have ever seen that operates anywhere near that scale.
LightningBrigade, that was a big joke as well. Should have been done in 1993 when MK 2 reformed again and Lordy was still there. Gillan now manipulated Morse/Airey line up into playing at the event while they never were eglible for the award.
Well it has become just a fashionable thing to have. As far as I can tell it has nothing to do with being "alternative" anymore... Just like smoking weed. At least in Canada...
Many years ago, I went to play at a heavy metal venue. I wore a shirt with tie. When a punk-ass tattooed, stinky rocker threatened to smash my face in because of my tie, I said: "Angus Young wears a tie. Would you want to smash his face in?" He then retreated with a "guess not". My buddies and I that play or listen to heavy metal don't have any tattoos. Lars' first take on tattoos was correct. He's smart.
Ozzy once said that people used to get tattoos to be different and stand out. He went on to say that if you want to be different today...dont get any tattoos
And that's what it is today or isn't it? Especially when you are a musician.. If you don't have tattoos, you are always someone who is not a 'true' musician I think 😂
HAHHAHA I love his reasons on why he's not getting a tattoo, simply true! I'd love to see another interview with Lars, nice perspective and such good vibes!
I want to get the Metallica “M” small on my upper arm as a tattoo. Could be easily covered by a shirt. Metallica and Lars is the reason I wanted to pursue music and playing the drums, and I feel like showing that and having Metallica with me at all times will show what shaped me to be me
I remember Ozzy telling his son, if you want to be different, dont get any tattoos! Man was he right on the mark. Us rockers (musicians) from the 80's know, we were different with tattoos. We were the rockers. All the others just didn't get tattoos. Now I just laugh when I see this craze of tattoos on everyone.
steve4321able At least we millennials don't try to look like girls unlike you old guys we're proud to actually be a male to look dress and act like men we don't put on makeup or eyeliner oh and god forbid we ever wear spandex pants!! (Violently gags!!!)
Agent Orange.....?! Living in Darkness.....Immense! Yes, tattoos used to be something that belonged to the sub-culture, people living on the edge, but now everyone and his granny is tattooed from top to bottom and it has become mainstream and frankly, a bit cheap and chavvy. I feel sorry for the real sub-culture that have earned their stripes...so to speak....I used to know by a persons tattoos that they had a good connection to music...but....not anymore....Yep, I sound a bit elitist on that point. It just annoys me. 😬🤐
No, Lars. The Who with Keith Moon was the most energetic and physical band ever and always will be. There's no way that they could perform the same way as they got older. Metallica for MOP was hands down the most intense concert I got to see, though.
Every time after the reporter finishes his questions, I predict what kind of Umm's he will say (It might be the louder UMM.. or Uummm....) then I'm correct. 😂😂
You see, in The Late Late Show with Jimmy Kimmel, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, and Robert Trujillo had a discussion with Jimmy Kimmel about Chester who died in 2017 one by one. It was very sad, but a good memmorable story. (I totally forgot to write "Bennington" in the reply when I was explaining that). I won't go on about him anymore beacuse it is time to move on
I have a tattoo but I do regret it. haha If you really want to be original, don't get tattoos or do and spend a looooong time thinking about what you wanna get. And I think Lars was right in the whole download situation all those years ago.
D A D A that is the most decent and nice comment I read on RUclips for years, especially on a video about Lars. The world would be a better place with more people like you. Thank you for being here. About tats, i know so many girls in the process of getting more and more of them, and they're all before 30, one of them started at 16, is now 23. I wanted to get tats when I was younger, but now I would regret it too. Can't talk any of them out of it though, but I'm very curious to see what all of them will say 10-20 years from now.
Thank you for that comment. I always though of it as he was defending the music industry and his own work by going against napster and downloading. Not going to lie, when I was younger I did download some music but stopped pretty quickly since I knew it was wrong. Since then I have only bought albums. I mean, youtube is fantastic for finding music you don't know about. And if you like it go out and buy the album! And Lars is a very good drummer. I'm not a big Metallica fan or anything but I love them as people and I love the fact that they are still here. So, all my respect to them. Yeah, I found that you can't talk many people out of getting a tat. Had buddies that got tattoes in their faces. Have not talked to them in years but would love to know if they still think it was a good ideá. Have a good one, my friend!
Lars isn't a technical drummer, but it's his simple and hard hitting style which made Metallica memorable and great. I buy physical copies of music whenever it's possible too. If you want to find out more about how downloading influenced the music industry, listen to some interviews with Gene Simmons. The guy is a real asshole sometimes, but he really hits home with what he says about the topic. Downloading didn't affect profits of artists which were already established, as much as it hit small and underground bands. There isn't going to be another Metallica, Guns'N'Roses or Nirvana. We're going to be stuck with corporate products like Bieber instead.
That's what happens when you have to worry about pussy feelings getting hurt over opinions. I'd be just as annoyed as he probably was, having to correct myself to please random sissies.
Would you begrudge Vince Niel for having his dead daughters name on his chest? One example from millions. For most people tattoos are a memory or a bonding experience. Even if it's not to commemorate something what's wrong with having a piece of art that nobody can take from you? Some people's identities are directly tied to the story imbedded in their skin. I love your judgmental nature thought. It reminds me why I love tattoos.
Nobody ever mentions how well Lars has aged. Besides the balding, he basically looks the same as he did at 19. Then again his father is like 90 and still doing well so it must be the genes as well as keeping himself in good shape with all the running he does.
Guess this interviewer has never heard of Iron Maiden? Still selling out Stadiums world wide and even longer in the tooth than Metallica. Of course, I hope BOTH bands keep doing it for a long time to come!
Or Cannibal Corpse, those fuckers been touring almost non-stop for 30 years now no matter what, even with what happened to them recently with Pat O'Brien's crazy, whatever the hell that was about, a meltdown i guess, they didn't cancel and are headlining the Decibel tour starting this Sunday in San Antonio, not packing big stadiums but still out there playing heavy shit and close to same age as the guys in Metallica, they're all pushing 50! so it's not "uncharted" territory Sir
@@fabricio2467 what are you talking about they sell out 20-40k person shows regularly across the US. Worldwide it's even crazier. Metal bands outside the US play gigantic shows all the time
I don't see what the big deal is, I know people with tattoos, I know people without tattoos. It's just like getting your ears pierced. It's not a big deal and I don't see why people have such strong feelings over something so small.
@David Mason people don't "ruin their looks" when they get tattoos and it's not gross. It's just something people do, and their isn't anything wrong with it. It's a personal choice. You can choose to have them, you can choose not to have them. You shouldn't judge people on any aspect of their physical appearance.
What a work horse! He's right about the rotator cuff and it's a wonder he's not developed tennis or golfer's elbow or other joint issues. I used to not like hearing him speak but he makes sense to me now, even in old interviews I realize how important he has become in Metallica and music. Although I probably wouldn't get along with Lars for 24 hours I see why Hetfield has respected his input for 35 years.

thanks for providing an interesting interview. I appreciated the questions, and the ability to draw thoughtful ideas from Ulrich.
Finally a decent statement without the postee making a statement identifying themselves to metallica or Lars. I guess you just come to expect it with this particular fanbase
Always wondered why he wears so much shit on his wrist, now I know some of it's from fans. That's pretty damn cool!

why all the haters the guy is a rock legend regardless if he likes tattoos or not... seems to me he lives a simple life go for you Lars...
steveninthe not to mention that he probably grew up in a wealthy family with a pro tennis player dad. Lol.
He's obviously an important asset to the band, for several reasons and he's a legend. I like his interviews.
iBallisticPancankes - You must be young... in the 90s, Metallica was just the shit!
For me, as I'd say a lot of other people, came when Lars starting throwing MAJOR temper tantrums that people were stealing his music from the internet. Lars was the biggest, most childish spearhead of this whining.
Even though, I've bought their music on:
1. LP (aka vinyl, aka record)
2. Cassette
3. CD
4. And now MP3 again?
How many times should he get paid for the same songs? Is $80M net worth not good enough for him? He really needs another $20 buck from me??
*cough, cough* metal *cough, cough*
Metallica has always been my favorite band . I enjoy following news about them. I think it's great how they tour now in spurts. Health & family is important.
Interviewer: Hi Lars
Lars: Um, Um um um um
" It's like asking, "Why don't you eat coal?" LOL. Classic. He seems very humble and thankful to still be playing. Great attitude!

King Nothing the nigga sounds like Bernie Sanders when he says it
Alexis Gates It does sound like a new York accent.
King Nothing paticulah
Christian 78 yeah I hear the New York accent
Very Well Written,Mister Flake-I appreciate the way you conducted your opinion, eloquently.
I dont think people would look at you weird today. Every fucking body has one.
I'm 48 , no tattoos. Since 25 been looking like Michelangelo David statute. Now people give me weird looks like how come your body has no any ink ? As Nobody cares if you have tattoos

The shit must suck, Losing all that killer hair. He had the best hair in the early days of metallica

Humid. Yes. It is ALWAYS humid. No matter what season.
I'm 34 and I don't have any tattoos. good for you Lars
In my country that was during 70-90 😁
I think soldiers had them as their profession was being a badass but at the same time especially then they were very respected people. Back then no one really saw soldiers as low lives since they selflessly served their country. That is the way it should be with our soldiers now.
social norms change over the years
So not much has changed?
These days NOT having a tattoo is a sign of originality. Tattoos have become a symbol of conformity.
TheQueenSpider dangerous thing...is that people are in control of traditions...and those in control of them...normally don't follow them...but it is a way to kind of play Simon says with the people without the people realising it...that is a very dangerous thing since we're u aware if that fact...
TheQueenSpider to me tattoos are for the people that need to try too hard.. theyre trying to make up for something
Getting tattoos was the worst mistake of my life. "So happy I got these tattoos 20 years ago." Said nobody ever.

Awesome interview. Lars is super wise and well spoken. Love hearing talk about these aspects of touring, their career, insights. Really cool.
Robert Hamrick being super wise and well spoken doesn't make up for the fact that he's a sub-par drummer.

Great interview with Lars Ulrich, thanks.
You got to be amazed at Maiden for keeping such a brutal tour routine and maintain such high energy level.
metal tattoos are always over the top, head to toe tattoos. it's more extraordinary to see a metal musician without them.
Lars answered that questions perfectly. His a very smart band member and founder .

@Shallex He speaks well for being a foreigner. It's one of the rare times I've heard his accent. I've never heard him speak in his native language.
Never saw an image that looked so good that I said to myself; "That image needs to be engraved in my skin for the rest of my life."
"Do you have any tattoos?"

Lars did a great job inducting my favorite band Deep Purple into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.
LightningBrigade, that was a big joke as well. Should have been done in 1993 when MK 2 reformed again and Lordy was still there. Gillan now manipulated Morse/Airey line up into playing at the event while they never were eglible for the award.
+Jon Blackers Well said Jon. I totally agree with you. I was very proud of Blackmore not showing up.
Well it has become just a fashionable thing to have. As far as I can tell it has nothing to do with being "alternative" anymore... Just like smoking weed. At least in Canada...
Branimir Sremec how is smoking weed "fashionable"

I want to get the Metallica “M” small on my upper arm as a tattoo. Could be easily covered by a shirt. Metallica and Lars is the reason I wanted to pursue music and playing the drums, and I feel like showing that and having Metallica with me at all times will show what shaped me to be me

You see, in The Late Late Show with Jimmy Kimmel, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, and Robert Trujillo had a discussion with Jimmy Kimmel about Chester who died in 2017 one by one. If you really want to be original, don't get tattoos or do and spend a looooong time thinking about what you wanna get.

Sorry. I was laughing too much to finish that sentence.

Don"t know why people hate Lars. He was a metal fan who made Metallica what they are. He's also aged well mentally.
Love to hear that they have a kind of motto... mental health and physical health is important!
They go together. Hand in hand.

There’s no problem with asking.
@David Mason people don't "ruin their looks" when they get tattoos and it's not gross. It's just something people do, and their isn't anything wrong with it. It's a personal choice. You can choose to have them, you can choose not to have them. You shouldn't judge people on any aspect of their physical appearance.

Lars: Uhhhhhhmmm uhhhhhhmm... i'm uhhhhhhhh... well uhhhhmmmm uhhhhhh i'm fine uhhhhhhhmmmm
