Growing up, this movie was hokey: I was a child of the TNG era. But over the years, I've realized that this was the Trekiest Trek ever to Trek, and it makes me so happy.
I love this movie, in no small part due Jerry Goldsmith's music, he and John Williams are my two favourite composers of all time, I probsbly own every Jerry Goldsmith score, the conplexity of his writing is unparallelled, he and John Williams are two sides of the same coin.
Especially when they released the directors cut...
It is effectively one feature-length episode of TOS, which is great if you like TOS.
Well said, and absolutely true.
Yes same
This is huge contender if humanity needs a national anthem.
United earth national anthem please
@@animatedcreeper7991 human supremacist
@@tomkatt8274 Imt rying to figure out if you're joking or not
First contact theme....otherwise I agree.
Yes but it wouldn't be a national anthem would it-- not of one country but an international one, an Earth anthem. I love this piece but for me not an "anthem" as such.
I love how this theme became an icon with Star Trek The Next Generation.
Just remember it first belonged to the original crew. So many think it started with the next generation.
hamhockbeans exactly
@@hamhockbeans It neither doesn't belong to the Original Crew nor to the TNG Crew, it belongs to the Star Trek Franchise as a whole :)
@@Justforvisit This and the TOS theme are "the" Star Trek themes.
but TNG sucks....even the hard way!
The composer really captured the majesty of the Star Trek concept.
Jerry Goldsmith is a genius
@@britneyspearsvillarosa I agree!!!
@@KeithCopeland778 I'm a lifelong Trekker thanks my late wonderful dad
I hate Star wars George Lucas stole a lot of ideas from Gene Roddenberry
@@britneyspearsvillarosa AWESOME!!!
What John Williams did for Star Wars, Jerry Goldsmith did for Star Trek.
Incredible composition.
Goldsmith is incredibly underrated considering Williams is a household name.
Out of all of Star Treks themes I think this one really capturers the soul of Star Trek and the feeling of discovery, grandeur and high adventure especially starting at 2:13
@@gabegu5102 Yeah it definitely has that epic John Williams classical kind of feel.
@@gabegu5102 Probably why it went on to be the TNG theme; or part of it did anyway.
I think you mean "what John Williams did for Star Wars, and Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones, and Superman, and Harry Potter, and Jaws, and the Olympics, and..."
1977: Star Wars opening theme
1978: Superman The Movie opening theme
1979: Star Trek The Motion Picture opening theme
Awesome!!!!!
Well remembered !!
You said it
Star Wars helped revive the classic orchestrated theme song
@@Mxyzptlksac The correct term is "score" not "song".
Not the first theme, but by far the BEST of all Star Trek themes. This (over the original series theme) screams Star Trek to me.
Yes indeed it's really the most nostalgic and clearly the precursor to every other theme to come but yes by far the best of them all and let's be honest the movie it self was beyond just ahead of it's time it was a masterpiece.
Benjamin Gadberry Same here, this was my childhood
My thoughts exactly.
Agree, but personally I think the Next Generation version of this theme is the better rendition. It's a bit faster, with the orchestration favoring the strings a little more, and overall it feels more... adventurous.
@@AstroPsych_ The brass in this rendition are what makes so majestic and "adventurous," especially when played through a theater sound system instead of a TV.
This is the most magnificent music I've ever heard in my life.
This beautifully bombastic track oozes with joy and optimism, loudly proclaiming a hopeful vision of the future, filled with exploration and learning. Glorious.
Motion Picture is probably the purest of the Star Trek movies. I love it. The soundtrack is exquisite.
Jerry Goldsmith's musical score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the best out of all of the ST films.
That’s probably why TNG took it for their main titles haha
You are entitled to your opinion but The Wrath of Khan's theme music is one of the best theatrical scores ever, period!
@@tommy516 You are correct, it's the second-best ST musical-score.
Nicholas Maude haha
@@tommy516 Goldsmith's is objectively the stronger score, as would be expected given Goldsmith's training, experience and talent. Horner did a great job for a young composer and 'TWOK' is definitely a superior example of scoring, but Goldsmith was the more talented composer. You judge the standard of a film score on the job the composer has to do and the circumstances they work under, not whether the music is more romantic, heroic, or ornately scored.
This movie was ine of the most true to trek films, because im essence it wasnt about battle, but about growth and contact
Hearing this theme being played in the movie theater was awesome.
And also in ST: TNG reruns.
Only a good sound system does full justice to the bass and the horns; the majesty and strength can be truly felt.
I would pay hundreds to experience that. Maybe thousands
I bet it was! 😊
One thing I loved is that Jerry Goldsmith collaborated with Alexander Courage to create this score and it shows.
Jerry must have spent endless nights composing this. The sheer amount of chord changes going on here is staggering to say the least. It's way more complex than John Williams but still has that simplicity where the melody is concerned. Amazing.
KINDLE It's why Jerry Goldsmith is my favorite film composer. The way he builds an entire score from just a simple theme is incredible. If you listen to Rudy, you realize it's just made up of two simple themes but Goldsmith composed amazing variations based on those two themes, they never sound stale.
KINDLE In fact it took him a lunchbreak after Director Robert Wise told him his initial music lacked a proper theme and so he reworked his previously written material and played to the producer and director on the piano.
I love this song. It expresses hope for the future.
Yes. I think the same!!
Ah, Star Trek the motion picture. You are under rated movie and very beutiful. So many beutiful frames and a beutiful soundtrack.
+raggarharry Aye vary under rated along with 3
+Jared “Philly” Philbrick Mr.Scott I'll need everything you have!!!!:)
I like the story, but it drags.
raggarharry wrath of kahn is much better
Of course Khan is better, but I also find TMP to be very underrated.
Ladies and Gentlemen, in its power and majesty, please stand for the anthem of the human race.
The love on Kirks face when he was the Enterprise for the first time in years is the best part of this movie.
wow, I'm a kid of the TNG era, I didn't even realize this theme came from the original movie.
I'm not positive, but I think it was composed for Phase II and got recycled for the movie, then TNG.
@@WashashoreProd no, it wasn't trust me....it was composed for TMP and then adapted for TNG.
Yep Matthew's got it right, production was dragging out, and the scoring sessions were started during post-production. The very first orchestra run-through of this theme was Oct 23rd 1979 and the film released Dec 6th 1979.
TNG was to have it’s own unique theme (it’s floating around RUclips somewhere), but then they decided to go with this instead
Same
I’ve been hearing this music since high school. I’m old now but I’m a Trekkie forever.
The BEST Star Trek film ever made. When the original television show grew up into adulthood and science fiction was its playing field, with of course the most beautiful star ship Enterprise to ever be designed. A true vision of a possible future.

Put simply....Jerry Goldsmith at his very best.
The definitive cinematic Star Trek score and the most beautiful!
Happy 50th Anniversary, Star Trek!!
i love star trek
I think there is reason why this theme stands apart from all the other Star Trek themes. It has provides that feeling of the grandeur of space, discover and high adventure.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) is one of the best SCI-FI, Fantasy, Space Opera Movies ever made!!!
Seriously I am amazed how much stuff is in there.
A great theme RIP. DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Majel Barrett, Leonard Nimoy and Grace Lee Whitney
AND Nichelle Nichols now..
RIP Jerry Goldsmith and Gene Roddenberry.
I still remember my first viewing of this. My three year old mind was absolutely blown away. The graceful form of the Enterprise, the haunting, alien designs of the V'Ger entity...this was the film that really got me thinking, "What's out there?"
Sure, it has a slow pace. Sure, it's a retread of an earlier TOS episode. But this is still, by far, my favorite Star Trek movie.
This is beyond excellent. You can feel the inspiration in music. Genius, like nothing today.
Not gonna lie, this is one of my favorite _Star Trek_ movies.
You're not alone.
Mine was Wraith of KHAAAAAAAANNNNN
John Hooyer mine too.
This one and Wrath of Khan are tied for first in my book.
I love The Motion Picture
This theme is so inspiring. You think about the progress of humanity thanks to brave starship captains and to the greatness and immensity of universe!
Star Trek is one of the most optimistic things our society has produced. It's a standard by which to judge ourselves, a goal to work towards, and a gentle reminder that we're capable of greatness when we work together.
That is the best quote I've ever read regarding Star Trek.
I was always hoping that it would be canonized in-universe as the Starfleet March, akin to the Navy's "Anchors Aweigh."
Yeah
I got to see this rereleased in theatres four years ago for the 40th anniversary and was blown away. Love this movie and theme! Very beautiful and so unique! My uncle is a huge Star Trek fan and I have memories watching this as a child and being blown away.
Surely one of the worlds' finest ever films - literally out of this world. Star wars for the masses but this I feel is for connoisseurs. And Goldsmiths' music is inimitable.
Finer words have never been expressed.
The visuals/effects in this are so fucking cool. I think they look more visually interesting than in a lot of modern sci-fi. It's a shame the director's cut of this movie hasn't been released in HD yet. (I think)
Such a under rated movie
I prefer the reboot
Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams and Ennio Morricone
Add Bernard Herrmann and you got Mount Rushmore.
Ivan Ivao I'd add Elmer Bernstein in there and they're my personal Mt. Rushmore.
At James Horner Hans Zimmer Alan Silvestri
Zimmer cannot stay in the same youtube video page - he's a moron
Ivan Ivao Add Michael Guicciano
The scenes with the Big E in spacedock are the reason why I will forever bemoan the death of classic model work.
a great great theme ! space exploration theme, the best. RIP and thanks Jerry Goldsmith
What a magnificent feast of visual effects!
This theme is so iconic and classic is up there with Star Trek New Generation
Don't you mean Star Trek the next generation❤
@@britneyspearsvillarosaIt’s the same theme.
Jerry Goldsmith is my favourite film composer, this piece can seem deceptively simple, but th chord shifts and mixed metres are incredibly complex.

The whole precept of Star Trek. It's message is quite clear. No matter how far we've come, how much we've achieved, there is always so much more we can do. There are no limits to the human spirit!

It's weird I haven't yet seen Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). This video is wonderful, really makes me want to see the entire movie.
Make sure you see the "Director's Cut". It's by far the best version.
yep, the 2000 DVD director's edition is a masterpiece to me.
The Director's Cut is better. Robert Wise was able to go back and finish the film (why it was unfinished is a long story).
Yes,the director's cut is better.
The visuals are stunning.
When you see it as a kid, you don't realize how huge the V'GER vessel is.
It's considered by some as long and boring but I love it. I think it really captures the awe and wonder that is Star Trek.
Great film, legendary musical score.
If Jerry Goldsmith had seen this video of the the theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture,he would've been very glad.

BEAUTIFULLY ORCHESTRATED AND THE SCENES COMPLETE THIS
It was good that the music from Star Trek:The Motion Picture(1979) was chosen to heard in Star Trek:The Next Generation and got to be heard in Star Trek V:The Final Frontier (1989),Star Trek VIII:First Contact (1996),Star Trek IX:Insurrection (1998) and Star Trek X:Nemesis (2002).

Happy 45th Anniversary Alien, Moonraker, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979-2024)
I can't believe that Alien, Moonraker, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture are all 45 years old now in 2024. I love Alien by Ridley Scott as one of my absolute favorite films, Moonraker was my very first bond film that made me a fan of James Bond, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a very good Star Trek film from start to finish. Moonraker with Roger Moore is a very underappreciated and great bond film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture had a brilliant Jerry Goldsmith music score, and Mike Stoklasa of RedLetterMedia did an excellent job defending Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Alien along with Moonraker and Star Trek: The Motion Picture are all way more better films than any Star Wars film made after 1980's The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars as a Franchise went downhill after Gary Kurtz left in 1980, and Gary Kurtz was a superb producer that made both Star Wars 1977 and The Empire Strikes Back as the absolute best films of Star Wars.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture! My favorite movie of all the Star Trek movies ever made. Love the soundtrack, too! Live Long and Prosper. 🖖
