I like the sheriff, but he is simply wrong. That is not an arguable opinion, it's the law in Florida. You can only use non-deadly force to protect your property, including vehicles. Deadly force (shooting someone) to protect your property is not legal in Florida, unfortunately. Texas is the place to be if you want the ability to protect your property by any means necessary.

Neither car owner was car jacked, that's the whole point; this was a property theft. The perp never assaulted or attempted to assault the woman, only to steal the car (according to the Sheriff). FL law is clear about the reasons for deadly force, and this was not one of them.

@Mike will Well let's see here...yeah Florida has 748k cases with a total of about 15,000 deaths. Mean while NY state has just under 500,000 cases with 32,000 deaths. But yet Florida has a higher population of people over 65. So NY has 1/3 less the number of cases but yet over twice as many deaths. So how well did the massive shutdown and mandatory mask help NY state? Oh by the way that county also had a mask mandate just Sheriff Judd chose not to enforce it. Same in my County in Florida. Even the city Chief of Police told the city commissioners that his officers were not going to enforce any mask mandates. We don't have problems with cops tasing or beating citizens for not wearing masks like NYC does.

Sheriff Judd was my professor in college when he was a Major with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. I have worked in government and in private practice in the legal system and can unequivocally say that he is demonstrative of precisely what we need in law enforcement, governance and leadership. If I am approached, they are going to be challenged when they pull on the door handle and find it's locked. Meanwhile, I will be out of sight calling 911! Low cost tracking devices are available online and I highly recommend their purchase. This will enable to law enforcement to locate your car and with luck, the thieves! The faster you recover your vehicle, the better the chances of getting it back intact. I would disinfect my vehicle if it were ever stolen and recovered in tack, that is for sure!

Deadly force (shooting someone) to protect your property is not legal in Florida, unfortunately. Texas is the place to be if you want the ability to protect your property by any means necessary.

Neither car owner was car jacked, that's the whole point; this was a property theft. The perp never assaulted or attempted to assault the woman, only to steal the car (according to the Sheriff). FL law is clear about the reasons for deadly force, and this was not one of them.

Well let's see here...yeah Florida has 748k cases with a total of about 15,000 deaths. Mean while NY state has just under 500,000 cases with 32,000 deaths. But yet Florida has a higher population of people over 65. So NY has 1/3 less the number of cases but yet over twice as many deaths. So how well did the massive shutdown and mandatory mask help NY state? Oh by the way that county also had a mask mandate just Sheriff Judd chose not to enforce it. Same in my County in Florida. Even the city Chief of Police told the city commissioners that his officers were not going to enforce any mask mandates. We don't have problems with cops tasing or beating citizens for not wearing masks like NYC does.

Sheriff Judd was my professor in college when he was a Major with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. I have worked in government and in private practice in the legal system and can unequivocally say that he is demonstrative of precisely what we need in law enforcement, governance and leadership. That man is a 100% Grade-A, top-tier human; he does his job (to serve and protect) and doesn’t make excuses for those who make his job necessary.

I'm a British fan of Grady Judd and while I might not agree with everything he says I always enjoy his press conferences. He is very good at public speaking and tells a good story. I like him. 😊

If I am approached, they are going to be challenged when they pull on the door handle and find it's locked. Meanwhile, I will be out of sight calling 911! Low cost tracking devices are available online and I highly recommend their purchase. This will enable to law enforcement to locate your car and with luck, the thieves! The faster you recover your vehicle, the better the chances of getting it back intact. I would disinfect my vehicle if it were ever stolen and recovered in tack, that is for sure!
