  • Quenby Mall was one of the earlier examples of a mall in the United States. Malls and what they were supposed to be weren't entirely established yet, and most malls like this were outclassed by later mall builds. This was no different. Opening in 1966, the mall would survive quite happily until the 1980's, when a newer mall took control of the retail environment. Stanly County would swoop in in 1993 and buy the nearly vacant dead mall, converting the mall to house governmental services. Ironically enough, due to this, the mall would be preserved and it outlasted the newer mall that replaced it. Quenby Mall stands today as Stanly County Commons, which offers a look into the 1960's and 1980's.

Great video and such a treasure of a mall! I like how you throw the photos at the end of your videos. It gives your videos a feeling of closure.

Glad in this video you included a picture from 1983. I encourage you to include more photos of these malls in their glory days. It improves the content quality of the videos. I was in my late teens in 1983. It is surreal when you look at pictures from 1983 how far ahead the music was then for the times. Both music and movies were ahead of its time in 1983 compared to things like automobiles and the general surroundings of the time.

It's funny because our newer mall here in Albemarle has been gone for over a couple decades. The Belk and one other store are what's left of the new mall mentioned in the video.

This mall honestly reminds of two places one the Belvidere Mall In Waukegan Illinois and A elementary school built from the 60s to the 80s

Awesome to keep seeing these older, small malls that have become county buildings or other mixed office and professional service locations. Also, no need for apology on the camera work. We are better to have more vids posted of these places versus less.
To any of the other dead retail channels in the comments, please keep filming these places when you know they are in your area.
Film more! Show us the old, rural and oddity retail out there. Too many channels filming the same malls over and over.

My small town I live in has a "dead mall." And the floor and some of the walls are original late 70's style.

They must have hired the most boring person in the world to design this mall cause it has no character at all. But great vid keep them coming

I kind of understand what you're saying but this former mall has a lot of vintage charm if you know where to look. The planters especially. However it is certainly nothing compared to a lot of the gorgeous malls of the past and some of the ones that still exist.
