Regency Square Mall | Jacksonville, FL | A Massive Decaying Mall That's Mostly Closed.
Welcome to my short look at what's left of the Regency Square Mall in Jacksonville Florida. Once a powerhouse boasting one of the highest square footage sales numbers in the country, this mall has fallen long and hard since its opening on March 2nd, 1967. Back then, it was a pretty simple mall, anchored by May-Cohens and JCPenney, with JR Anchor stores Furchgotts, Ivey's and Woolworth. Through the years, major expansions would be performed at the mall, essentially doubling its size and adding 3 more department stores, totaling to nearly 1.4 million square feet. This makes it one of the largest dead malls in the Southern United States, and one of the larger malls in the South overall. Unfo...

It's crazy to see how much this mall has decayed. I remember riding the train ride in the center main entrance of regency. Hell, I think we swung around the mall sometime in the 2010s just to see what was up with it still. It sucks that it's basically dead now. Though, the last time I went to the mall, it was during Covid when they did covid tresting in the Sears. It was wild going back in there after it closed/

Sad for sure, so many great memories as a kid going there when it opened all the way til the '80's. there was a strip mall on the Sears end before expansion with Annie Tiques, Gingess formal wear, a mens big and tall store and a grocery store, cant remember if it was a Big Star, Colonial or what ?? many memories of perusing the record bar, Spencers gifts, radio shack and mr. Dunderbachs !! At Christmas time the place was packed and as a teenager it was the place to see and be seen, trolling and flirting with girls !! Also Eastside Marios was a fav hangout for me in early '80's with bogo happy hour 22 oz. beers and free appetizers ! SIGH...Good times : )

I moved to Jacksonville when I was 19 in 1985. This mall was the first place my mom took me to and I shopped there for many years. I also worked at Houlihan's as a server and bartender from 1992-1997. I learned that Christmas isn't really a joyful time for mall workers, as people were exponentially meaner to servers during the holidays. I was surprised. I can't remember my last time in that mall, but I do remember buying my wardrobe for a real estate job in the early 2000s, so my last visit was likely after 2005 when I bought a house in the Orange Park area. I heard that it had become wild with crime with out of control youth creating chaos and taking over sometime soon after that. I am truly sad it is decaying. I have many great memories of shopping, going to the movies and working at Houlihan's. Thanks for the video!

I would hang out at Regency all the time. The best part was when the food court was 2 stories, with the 2nd story being more seating area that would overlook the actual mall area looking down on the people shopping. The entrance to the movie theater was also in the food court and you would have to walk under the 2nd story seating area to enter. It was such a great mall, especially during Christmas! As large as the mall is, the mall was always packed with people and you had to hunt for a parking space.

Good memories of this place as a kid growing up in the 80s. Da would take me and bro to the arcade(s) to play skiball for tickets. Eventually bro and I graduated to proper video games. Not sure how good my memory is, but I think the first arcade where we played skiball was in the expansion wing, and it closed first, leaving Aladdin's Castle, on the food court side. At some point after that there was Tilt, as well.

Underrated part of why Regency died was River City Marketplace opening up on the northside of Jacksonville in 2005. Regency was still plugging along even if its days as a premiere shopping destination were long gone because the Northside didn't have any shopping destinations and Regency was the closest mall. Once RCMP opened up they could only rely on Arlington which has been going downhill for 20+ years.

This is my hometown and it breaks my heart to see what the mall has become. It’s hard for businesses to stay in our mall because of how insanely expensive the rent is. If the owners would be more flexible with said rent then we could have a lot more stores than we have now. I’m also sorry that mall employee was so unkind. You weren’t being malicious at all and you didn’t deserve that treatment.

This mall was the place to do all of your shopping. I remember as a kid before the 1981 expansion there was even a grocery store separate from the mall at the west end. With the 1981 expansion it really became the place to be. I graduated high school in 1982 and so many of my classmates worked there and if you didn't work there, you cruised the mall and stopped in to visit all of your friends. I feel like the crime at the mall was pretty low back then and I'm going to guess it increased in the 1990s to early 2000s.. My husband worked at Bresler's Ice Cream in the mall back in the early 70s. He's 71 years old now, but can still talk about working there, scooping ice cream with his friends, and the great work ethic instilled by the owner, Mr. Kerner. As a child I remember my mom taking me to Larry's Shoes to buy my school shoes every year. I remember buying my first business suit at Casual Corner for my job interviews after finishing college in 1987. I also regularly shopped at the young women's shop 5-7-9. It's sad when things like this totally go by the wayside, but hopefully when the inevitable happens and it is torn down, the space will be used for something that works for the community now.

I personally spoke with the owner about 3 years ago and wanted to help do something to fill space in the mall. He never met with me. I was trying to give him ideas for our area and people. This is NOT from him but for this area I was told they basically ran rent so high people moved on to greener pastures. Evidently it does not matter because it sets empty and our residents drive 45 minutes to shop.

At least before the owners put in carpet on the 2nd floor in the late 90s(carpets have no business being in malls). I grew up going to Northlake because it was the nicest mall near the more rural area we lived in. It used to be a beautiful place with the fountains and atriums but they started disabling and removing a lot of that in the mid to late 2000’s when the mall was well into decline. The stairs you went up towards the end used to be escalators with a fountain/waterfall in between and it really was cool to see. I still remember when the third floor at Macy’s was still in use and when Piccadilly was about the only restaurant in the mall before they built the food court in the mid 90’s. The food court had a nice fountain and a lot of plants beneath the center glass atrium that really gave the space a nice homie feeling. Idk all the demographic statistics of the area, but major crime really became a problem at Northlake around 2000 which is why we stopped going unfortunately. The Tucker area was always pretty decent but not too far south is places like Memorial Drive which are cesspools. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what drove some of the crime increase, especially as the shopping in that area and around South DeKalb Mall closed up. Regardless, economics are the number 1 thing killing malls these days. Why sit in traffic and deal with huge crowds when you can order whatever you want from home? Kinda sad but I believe only the real high end malls will survive in the long run.

Sad to see the Selma Mall this way. Practically abandoned ! Looking like it won't be long before it's becomes just another distant memory of places that I enjoyed growing up in Selma Alabama. The Selma Mall used to be where it was happening back in the day. You couldn't go in the Selma Mall without bumping into you sum friends or the chicks that you were crazy about at the time LOL. I remember walking thru the front entrance first on the left was that creepy ass wig store. First on the right side was the military recruiting office that never seemed to be open for opportunity. Traveling further down the front entrance corridor about midway every December you could expect ol'Santa Clause there set up shop asking all the childrens about their Christmas wish list then taking and selling epic photos (that show up after Xmas) to all the parents. LMAO Coming further down the corridor you approach the great big majestic main focal point of the entire Selma Mall ! The great big beautiful and all powerful wishing fountain ! Right dead center of the Selma Mall's bustling intersecting highway. All of my parents loose change went in that fountain straight up ! LMAO Standing at the fountain directly to your right was the ice cream shop that had all the good shit. To the left were the drink and candy vending machines. Straight aheads was muthaphukin "Goodies" clothing dept. Find sum fly threads in Goodies ! Taking a left turn cruising past almighty wishing fountain transitioning into the left corridor just up ahead alittle on the right you'd first hear the futuristic digital sounds of pouring out of the Selma Malls one and only bad ass Arcade !!! (always super dark inside) Loved that shit ! PacMan,Mrs.PacMan,Air hockey,Contra, M.Jackson Moon Walker, Space Invaders Galactica, Galaga, Double Dragon, and my personal favorite that big ass enclosed sit inside driving arcade game "Pole Position" Not to metion multiple Kik ass pinball machines to bounce between while waiting on other losers to quit bullshitting and get the hell off my game. ( T'was serious shit man! ) Across the hall from the Arcade was and always be my absolute favorite store in the Selma Alabama Mall. { PEPPERMINT Records } The music store that fed my glorious metal head appetite throughout my time in life back home in beautiful Selma Alabama. I truly miss and hang onto the great memories from growing up there. Feel blessed to have lived the experience that Selma had to offer me during my youth. Good and Bad ! There's a bunch of other awesome stores I'm not bore with. Miss the hell outta walking thru that old forgotten place with my family & old friends back home every damn day. With that i say Long Live The Selma Mall !!! May the many ghost of better yesteryears roam the halls forever and ever ! In the words of AC/DC I say....... Rock'n'Roll ain't noise Pollution

The absolute latest news on this mall is that a children's museum has moved into the lower level of the mall, and I believe a charter school is being developed inside the former Parisian / Kohls. It seems the fate of this mall will be one of offices and non-traditional mall offerings going forward, which isn't a bad thing.
