Westgate Mall | Spartanburg, SC | A Neon 1990's esque mall that's starting to struggle.

- The Westgate Mall, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, opened for business on October 25th, 1975, originally featuring Meyers Arnold, Belk Hudson, and Sears. The mall would expand in 1977, adding JCPenney, and again in 1995, adding JB White, Dillards, a new food court and a 8 screen movie theater. Westgate mall's existence indirectly hurt the newer but ill fated Hillcrest Mall, and itself had to renovate and expand to prevent the Rouse Company from building a mall in Spartanburg nearby. By the time of the 2010's though, cracks begun to form with the Westgate Mall. Anchor store closures have left the mall fractured and vacancies are starting to appear. To make matters worse, as of May 2024, CBL & Associates have sold the mall to Namdar Realty. The fate of the Westgate Mall is unclear, however, today it stands as a mall that hangs in the balance between alive and dying.

This is my childhood mall from my hometown! I have so many memories of spending time here with friends in high school. Almost every day we’d go and hang out in the food court. Good times. The mall is actually quite lively on weekends and during the holidays! I went last Friday and it’s still got a decent amount of the parking lot full. If this place went I don’t know what I’d do.
Excellent video! In September, 2024, it was announced that the new owners of the mall have hired a commercial real estate firm, Spencer Hines, to market at least 20 vacant spaces in the mall.

This is very sad. I remember as a teenager when this mall opened in 1975. It was a vibrant , busy upbeat time. Because of many store closures the vibe feels very unsafe and I'm afraid the end of Westgate is near.
It’s a really nice mall. I love the mid 90’s aesthetics. Namdar will probably run it into the ground. They own a childhood mall in NJ that is dead. The mall where I live now in SC is owned by CBL and seems to be doing well.
I wanted to go up stairs in the food court so bad, but there was a lot of people around. If I’m ever in that area again I’m going early and I’m going up there. Ninja Style

Malls are going obsolete. This younger generation can't afford to shop there. They don't want to. They rather get high, and do adult activities. Than enjoy being a teenager. This is what our world coming too. Everyone is becoming more and more isolated.
