You made him feel comfortable in sharing his story. It is a well done interview. I hope he doesn’t face any backlash. I applaud him for being brave and true to himself.
my university in Beijing is so gay, there aren't that many boys anyway.... so the girls are all complaining 😂 The boys are easy to spot and sometimes boys will walk hand in hand, but the girls are harder to spot If someone could give me a clue, I'd be grateful!
No, it's fine. The only thing is that he seems to sit in a room with a lot of echo but the speed is fine and you both speak very standard and clear Mandarin.
This video is so important! Thank you so much for it. I really dont know if you realized the meaning for some one in the community. Thanks, really thanks!
Such a thoughtful and compassionate interview! It's amazing how you create such a safe and welcoming space for open conversation. This was a beautiful way to shed light on important topics while making him feel truly comfortable being himself. ❤
As a lesbian girl who is studing chinese and wants to move to China someday, I'm truly happy you made this video. If you have any lesbian or saphic friend that would accept to do this kind of video, please do it haha. Anyways, thank you so much and keep doing your great job as always. 非常谢谢!
hey!! 💗 i don’t know if you’ll see this but i’m also a lesbian who’s studying chinese and is going to study in china in like a month :) we could add each other somewhere if you’d like ^^
Thank you! As a 🏳️🌈者 myself, it's so good to hear from others about what the culture is like and the direction it's going there. Thank you for giving a voice!
Something I'm curious about: I've heard that attitudes in China, especially outside of the cities and among the older generations, can be pretty conservative and that families might not accept their children being gay. But I've also heard that there is very little hate crime against gay people, unlike other parts of the world where a lot of the homophobic attitudes are rooted in religion. Is this true? Or if it is, is it only true in certain cities?
I am not gay, but I am Chinese. I can assure you that gay people will absolutely not have to worry about violence just because they're gay. Violence, in general, is abhorred in Confucian culture. I'd go so far as to say there wouldn't be any out-and-out discrimination (as in not being allowed into a restaurant), but like I said, I'm not gay, so I don't want to speak on gay people's behalf. It's just that I've never seen anything like that. But definitely no violence.
I am a gay who comes out. Fortunately, my friends support me very much, and my classmates and colleagues do not exclude me. What's better is that my parents also accepted it
@@aprillen Thank you. But to be honest, China is not as open as Europe. Some parents still want a grandchild. Sometimes they will force their children to marry a girl and get a grandchild.
Great. More interviews please! I like Mandarin Corner's interviews but somehow yours is much easier for shaddowing. And i love the slowed down for emphasis words. So clever and more cool modern girl. Well done!
Unfortunately, China is becoming more and more conservative about LGBT since 2015, so Bangkok's Proud flag may not appear in Beijing, Shanghai or other Chinese cities.
I relate to the experience of not coming out to my family. Sometimes it's just not worth it, and that sucks, and is a hard thing to grapple with, but in a lot of situations it's for the best.
I feel exactly the same like a real macho in Canada. The real masculinity is prohibited here. I feel it is a process and need to make the path for next generation. I understand him perfectly. It has a lack of testosterones, you know, but we represent and inspire.
ShuoShuo, pardon me to argue. China is quite open, they liberalized gay marrige even before Thailand, that's a factual mistake. They were the first in SE-Asia, if we count them there.

@@Flyingsearat I know exactly what she meant I was just pointing out that she wasn't exactly right. Not all China is Taiwan, but all Taiwan is China. So if the question is: Does China recognise gay marriage? The answer cannot be no.
I think the whole pride month is a very bad thing for society. Don't get me wrong. It's okay that everybody should have the freedom to live as he or she wants to. But as a society, the ideals have to be kept up. Otherwise the society will ruin itself. And that's what I loved in China, where I lived 10 years ago. At that time, I went accidentally in a pub in Shanghai, in which a gay porn was running at the TVs. It was not a big deal, we left the pub again after one beer. And I thought that this level of tolerance is exactly the right one. But: the "promotion" of any thing other than the ideal of husband and wife is bad. We realize this now in Germany. And I'm afraid, that China will take a bad course - the more they would follow the Western examples, the worse it will get.
@@Angelofnine Well, the history confirms me. The Romans, the Greek, the US, whole Europe, Germany... the moral decline (I'm talking about a society, not about indiviuals!) comes before its fall. And that's the reason why China was able to rise that fast out of the ashes so to say. Prove me history-wise that I'm wrong.
@@sbrgm "History confirms"? I don't think gays brought down those empires... Where did you get that theory from? That's like saying slavery brought down Rome because they also had that. Why do you think it was homosexuality? I'm also German and you seem to live in another country. Some people are going crazy with their promotion of homosexuality. But so are people on the right of the political spectrum promoting weird and extreme things. Or women activists. Whenever there is a problem, you'll have some who become extreme in their demands and propaganda. Just ignore them and be a normal person like you seem to be.
