A good thought, and I like your thinking here, but probably not so in my case. Last year I saved over 1 megawatt of power writing on the Atom PC, also keeping a lot of wear off the video editing PC. So I'm as sure as I can be that I am consuming a lot less energy and purchasing less replacement hardware running the two systems.
I take your point about CPU/GPU, but I don't like the look of Aero, and more fundamentally I cannot stand Cleartype (or as I think it ought to be termed "Blurrytype". And there is no way to **completely** turn off Cleartype in Aero. In fact, there are several interface features that can only be set/controlled using the Classic interface. I totally accept that this is personal preference, but in my view every second spent in the OS is wasted time. I turn on a PC to run software, not Windows. :)
Yes, but here my wrist strap is tucked away off screen. This is because, in the videos where I have shown it and made comment on it, I have gained so many negative and abusive comments on the subject that I simply do not want the hassle of the trolls any more. Many people seem to believe that static precautions are non longer relevant ("I've never used one and I've been OK", etc). I differ with this view. But each to their own.
Thanks for this. I am not (now) into gaming, and have seen so many views on the GTX 650. It is the bottom of the GTX range, but to me seems a great card, esp for the price & power consumption. So I am happy to be corrected that this is mid-to-high range (though I know there are people here who will disagree with that). The version I used here is also slightly overclocked by Gigabyte, & with 2GB. For me, the performance improvements in Premiere and Lightwave are significant, & I am very pleased.
This video reminds me of those documentaries in the 90s; the text sounds/transitions and the style of filming. Cheers for the nostalgia blast :P Great video anyways mate, thanks a lot.
Man this is a time capsule gem. Ah the times where a 650 could be considered an upgrade and relevant to computing. Less than 100 watts to run the card... now nvidia is rumored to have a TDP close to 600 Watts for their 40 series cards.
Yes, I'm uninstalling the dedicated driver for the graphics card, but once it is gone a standard a standard VGA driver is needed to allow Windows to generate a display. There always has to be some kind of display driver installed, or you won't see anything! And this is why uninstalling in Safe Mode is a good idea.
As you are upgrading from integrated/onboard graphics to a separate graphics card things should work fine without uninstalling drivers first. So I would suggest just fitting the card, and then installing the driver. Enjoy your new 650 -- I think you will find it a major improvement over your onboard graphics. :)
Yes, it would be the same. You would ideally still need to uninstall your current driver (ie the driver running your onboard graphics), and as you say the hardware part would just involve plugging in the new card.
I love your retro 70's style channel and I'm so glad I found it. I've been watching many of your old videos. I found your channel via Carey Holzman as he promoted it with his recent SSD video.
Possibly. But not something I'd try. I read up a lot on the driver issue before changing my card, and all of the advice I could find (including that from Nvidia) was to uninstall old drivers and then reinstall new ones. Granted, I have heard of people just pulling out one card, putting in another, and everything worked fine. But I would not do this myself, esp. in a modern version of Windows.
The tests were done in the PassMark PerformanceTest software (it produces both the charts, and the Direct X tests -- and far more! -- that I show at the end. Google "PassMark Performance test". There is a 30 day free evaluation.
Because, unlike Windows XP and before, Windows 7 does not install a default VGA driver, hence leaving the machine unbootable (well, bootable without a display). It does not always happen, but when it does it is not nice! :)
+Kenny S You sound like an idiot. Judging by your comment you are clearly offended with being old school. ExplainingComputers is clearly and approvingly is using something that is old-fashioned, the "ATX" outdated case for even 4 years ago.... As he explained as he shared that case with us. Vampires Crypt took notice and made a great comment. What the hell makes you think that Millennial's don't understand things like this? Your ignorance makes me laugh, you old fart.
The 650 Ti is rated at 105w, compared to 64w (and the Ti Boost at 134w). So yes, the 650 Ti does not create twice as much heat, but about 64 per cent more (the direct relationship between energy use and heat generation is inevitable!). This does not mean that both cards cannot run cool -- but their heat has to go somewhere, and at least some will be inside the case. For me the bigger issue was absolutely power consumption, and I found it very hard to justify the extra wattage burning away. :)
Got a GTX 650 and did a video on it works pretty well good choice mate. However I must say that the card is mid to high range due to the fact it can handle most games I have run so far at high to medium settings. With 1GB GDDR5.
You first need to check if your power supply has anough watts and you have enough cables for the gpu you cant just put the thing in there and spec it to work.
Other than using up space on your drive, is using the Express installation option bad for your computer if all you are doing is video and photo editing? Thank you for such a concise video... as well as great information.
ExplainingComputers wow.. I did not expect such a quick answer! Old card is out, new card is IN... Express software automatically uninstalled the previous cards drivers also... nice touch. Thank you for giving Non-Computer Techs, the information and confidence to make changes on our own. You're providing a great service. I put in the Nvidia Quadro K4000... fantastic boost to my editing workflow!
nanosarge1 In my case, running Windows 7 64 bit, when I installed the card "using express install" it did indeed detect other graphics drivers and removed them when proceeding with the new drivers. Trouble free... still working fabulous by the way.
Yes, I am still pleased with my Core2Quad. An i7 would be more powerful, but still not **that much** more powerful. So I will run the chip and its 775 motherboard into the ground. When one or the other goes, I'll more to an i7 (and do a video of the upgrade!).
Personally in this situation I would remove the old card and insert the new one, and then try booting in safe mode, doing the uninstall, and then booting normally and installing the new drivers. You may get away with things just fitting the new card, booting normally straight away and installing the new drivers. But on my own machine I would not risk it. Good luck! :)
Watching this video I thought that it has held up pretty well as the process done while changing the graphics card is still the same as it is now with the interface used is still PCI Express but newer versions. Parts that didn't hold up for me are the driver uninstall process as its more recommended now to use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove the previous graphics drivers and the Windows Experience Index which doesn't exist in modern versions of Windows like Windows 10. But honestly this comment doesn't matter as this video is 9 years old and there are other guides that are more recent done by both you and other channels.
Rendering animation in LightWave -- like in the many of the videos here, and especially on my ExplainingTheFuture channel. Look at something like my recent "Top Ten New Future Jobs" video on that channel. I've done some shots at 1080p for TV shows this year that ran c.40 mins a frame! :O
It is now March 12, 2018, and this process still applies. I just used an older eVGA GEForce GTX 750ti 2GB card in a new Windows 10 8th gen i7 8700K build. The card cost me about $110 two years ago since it is old tech. But I use it for three monitors and video editing, not gaming.
Yes, and I agonized over it! But the 650 Ti uses twice the power, and hence generates twice as much heat, both of which are a big consideration for me in a machine that often renders 24/7. And ultimately the 650 now allows me to edit HD without rendering previews, so will save a lot of time. :)
cuda is a proprietary nvidia platform for general purpose processing, opencl was releaased by krhonos group for the same purpose. opengl was a platform for developing graphics code.
My apologies, I will take your advice. I was going to say "mid range". :) Already here people have criticised the card for its low power. But I think it is a rather good card! :)
I have problems upgrading drivers for my GTX 560, even the GeForce experience would not recognize the card or software. I will try with the steps you took and hope I can avoid a clean install of windows. Virus attack left me without windows restore or the ability to upgrade my graphic's card drivers.
Thank you for this video I was in search of a video like this someone who explained almost everything and in detail. I tried downloading the driver sweeper to remove old drivers little did I know it was one big malware ridden mess. So thanks for showing me the way of uninstalling drivers without that horrible software. Great Vid;)
A couple years ago my friend bought this GPU as an upgrade from the integrated graphics which came from his computer. About half a year in using it he noticed a slight clicking noise in the computer, as well as some graphics glitches. Once we took the side off his PC we saw the fan shroud scattered all over the case with parts of it being melted. To this day we have no idea how the GPU got so hot, especially since it was never overclocked.
I have to wonder why you run your desktop in the classic interface. I understand it may look nicer to some, but it is in fact entirely cpu driven. The Aero interface uses the gpu and the cpu to render windows. If you dislike the transparency you can always turn it off, but I do recommend you use the Aero interface. Especially with a video card like the GTX 650. Nice video though! :)
That's some pre-XP stuff there to uninstall drivers in safe mode. It's specially rare to have any problems in Win7 and beoynd after swapping graphics cards. :)
There could be an issue or two with your situation. Nvidia sometimes doesn't support graphics chips in laptops and all-in-ones since they are not a standard spec. Also, Nvidia is rolling out the "GeForce Experience" which in bundled with one of the driver updates but is NOT compatible with XP or older Windows OS's. There is a way around downloading the bundle if you manually select XP as your OS and search the driver list that way.
Would i have to do anything before hand for instance: Touching metal? or connecting myself to something that will reduce my electric charge? if so how?
I really recommend putting your computer into safe mode when removing your drivers. I didn't do it and my windows became unbootable and my cd didn't repair it. Good chance all my important files are on a secondary drive!
I recommend the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 ti oc. more power at a VERY reasonable price it has given me no grief so far and is quite powerful when paired with an i3-3220. :) the build i made recently came out in the $600ish range and is very quick and includes the 650 ti oc.
hey i have a delloptiplex 745 sff i have uprgraded the cpu to a q6600 quad core it works and i now want this card i also have bought a 500 w psu supply but im wondering that this card may not fit in my case
0:53 These days for Nvidia, you no longer have to uninstall the old drivers prior to installing new drivers.... You can, but installing new Nvidia drivers will automatically remove and replace necessary driver files with no problems or conflicts. It even gives you an option to do to a "clean install" that will wipe away everything of the old drivers, and reset any preferences and custom options you set to default. GeForce Experience comes highly recommended too.
How are you getting your information on the performance test you run? Is that built into Windows or do you go to a web site to run these test. I know how to find the Windows experience rating, was talking about the red and green lined test. Thank you! Moonpie
I love how most of the comments on here are just pathetic, you spent £34 on a case & it has better airflow? That's great to know, just unfortunate that no one gives a fuck. Don't like what he did and/or does? Stop watching his videos.
hello i have a problem with this card, it says windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (code 43). any suggestions howto repair it?
SharpGamingHD Wow, nobody has ever liked my settings before! :) I usually get slated for keepings them! The theme is based on the Windows Classic theme which is the first listed under "Basic and High Contrast Themes" in Windows 7. Having selected this I then changed a lot of font settings, which can be accessed via entering "change window colors and metrics" in the control panel search box. Here, for example, my menu font is Tamoha 10 bold in black, and selected items are the same with a bright yellow background, which for me makes the menus really easy to use. My advice is to change things incrementally and to keep saving the theme under different names as you experiment. Good Luck! :) PS: Note that I have ClearType deeply turned off (via a registry hack).
ExplainingComputers thanks! and yeah, i use it for performance mostly, and i already knew about the windows classic theme, just wondering what the other things you had going like the font and stuff. thank you.
***** Aero themes have transitions, and transparency, + more detail. the classics themes have no transitions, no transparency, and little detail. Thus, improving performance.
charlie It is a very old tower from SuperMicro (c.1999 I think). I don't have a model number I'm afraid. The front has also been altered by myself -- there used to be a few little holes where now there is the rectangular cutout and DIY mesh! :)
A good thought, and I like your thinking here, but probably not so in my case. Last year I saved over 1 megawatt of power writing on the Atom PC, also keeping a lot of wear off the video editing PC. You are absolutely correct -- the drives are a long way from the motherboard (the case is 71cm tall), and even with long cables they are pretty tight.
I take your point about CPU/GPU, but I don't like the look of Aero, and more fundamentally I cannot stand Cleartype (or as I think it ought to be termed "Blurrytype". You should remove the power plug before touching anything inside.
removing power plug should be common sense or doing anything with cover off the cpu box.. A lot ppl don't do it though.
no, you really dont. i work on computers all the time with the power on.

Good Luck! :)
PS: Note that I have ClearType deeply turned off (via a registry hack).
Hi Chris I watch your vids I would like to know what case was that on your editing computer the big floor one
charlie It is a very old tower from SuperMicro (c.1999 I think). I don't have a model number I'm afraid. The front has also been altered by myself -- there used to be a few little holes where now there is the rectangular cutout and DIY mesh! :)

I had the same thought. Why not uninstall the driver properly then shutdown the computer. Then change the graphics card and install the new driver.
