    AMD is the other chip manufacturer on the market, not Radeon... Radeon is a product line like GeForce for Nvidia.

      This just means that Radeon is now a distinct unit within the AMD brand, with their own staff and budget... Radeon is still an AMD product line and AMD is still the manufacturer behind all this...

      @Против Глобал
      That's 100% wrong. AMD did buy ATI, Radeon originally was a trademark of ATI.

    • @ulriksonne5697
      @ulriksonne5697 7 лет назад +4

      I wouldn't fault you for saying radeon because AMD bought ATI 11 years ago and is now the radeon technologies group and is a separate subdivision of AMD, so saying the gpu chips are made by radeon is technicaly correct, although probably misinformed.

      You don't. That is just for 'Geforce Experience' - this is not required and is optional when installing the drivers. If you do want to use it, creating an NVidia account only requires an email address, so just create a 'burner' email if you're feeling that paranoid

    Hi Christopher, I'd like to join with all the other viewers complaining about this totally unecessary personal data collection. It's self defeating at any rate, if we can't avoid it - and thanks for showing me how to in this case - we'll just set up an unmonitored address and give them, err, poo for the personal details. Bob.

    The GT1030 is actually one of the best base model GPU's that has ever been released. It can competently do everything needed. While it's can't do 4k gaming, at can do 4k video playback without any problems. Additionally, I fully agree with you about the "Geforce Experience". Users can avoid installing it by selecting "Custom Install" during setup and deselecting it.

    Another great piece of Sunday night viewing and on something that isn't seen that often, passive cooled GFX cards, even tho I ordered one quite a few years back in error - an Nvidia 6600 GS instead of a 6600 GT.

      AMD farmed out the driver for my APU A10-6700 to some company that didn't do a good job such that it crashed the computer. I go to this company's site and while I tried to download the "improved" driver, these fools tried to load on to my computer some sort of massive program that functioned as crashware. I got so mad, I returned to Linux. I had planned to do that in time but I had reasons for desiring Windows. Away Linux and its drivers both open and not-open have been smooth sailing for me.

      I would strongly recommend AMD hardware in conjunction with Linux. You can use the open source driver (which performs exceptionally well these days) and you won't have to worry about driver compatibility down the line (which tends to be problem in the long run with nvidia on Linux). Generally speaking, nvidia has historically been very uncooperative with the Linux community, so while you CAN get proprietary drivers working right now, don't expect them to work with newer versions of the Linux kernel several years from now.

      I guess it depends if you are a gamer or not.
      As a gamer, I do need the latest drivers.
      The other reason is OpenGL. If you need OpenGL, Microsoft doesn't include the OpenGL driver that comes from nVidia, AMD, or whatever for some reason. They just delete it. I have never seen an official explanation from Microsoft for this.
      Probably the reason is that they don't like OpenGL. They prefer the market Direct3D.

    I suppose it's technically not "silent" due to coil whine. But it's considerably quieter than its fan cooled counterperts, at the expense of performance and longevity. It would however, be advantageous in a home theatre computer where low power consuption, low heat generation and low noise are favourable.

  • @ching-chenhuang8119

    Recently I bought a Gigabyte GT 1030 for my retro gaming PC, it was produced this January, and it didn't have a such big-ass heatsink installed, instead a moderate-size heatsink and a fan, easier to fit into a small form factor PC.

    You should never rely on Windows to offer the latest drivers. Go to Nvidia website;-www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/126903/en-us and get the latest version 388.31 dated 15.11.2017.
    Also, you should really run guru3d's 'Display Driver Uninstaller', especially when changing from a 900 series to a 1000 series card.

      i dont know if i want install software to uninstall a driver... just do it manualy and to use the windows update for GPU driver is totaly ok cause the source is Nvidia anyways... i guess if you clean the temp-folder so the old installers dont pile up there is no different

    • @vyns5896
      @vyns5896 7 лет назад

      I don't think the software actually installs. It just runs and allows you to cleanly remove all traces of the old driver so a fresh clean install can occur. Not usually needed if you are just updating a driver on the same Video Card, but 'almost' essential if you are changing from one generation of cards to another. And I would say, vital if you were to change from and AMD to an Nvidia or other way around.

    maybe not the point of the video but id stay away from sub XX50 nvidia cards since they are worse value than the more mid range ones
    the 1030 for example has *alot* less perfomance while having a similar price to a 1050

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 лет назад +12

      I take your point, and it really depends on what you need to do with the card, but the 1050 models are about double the price of the 1030s, and non are passively cooled.

    • @ukcroupier
      @ukcroupier 7 лет назад +7

      In UK the 1050 is considerably more expensive than a 1030 (1030 can be had for £60, the 1050 lowest I've seen is £108) plus, if you've seen any of his other rigs, he's a big believer in having stuff that does the job he needs it to do, not paying for power that's wasted.

    • @officer_baitlyn
      @officer_baitlyn 7 лет назад +2

      yeah noise wise the passive 1030 definetly outdoes any active 1050
      just wanted to mention that if someone is looking for value, the 1030 isnt the best option available.
      since alot of people tend to assosiate a lower price with better value

    Hey there, Mr Barnatt. I'm here to tell you that Your cpu cooler is looking in wrong derection. Air should be blown out towards exit cooler. Overheating psu with hot air from cpu sounds like a bad idea.

      This is a very interesting point -- I must investigate the airflow direction in the case.

      It looks as though it's mounted properly. The fan would blow upwards, not toward the video card.

    • @electronicsworkbench
      @electronicsworkbench 6 лет назад

      In my 40 years experience with computers from the IMSAI to current, the biggest issue is too little exhaust fan draw. Yes the PS will get hotter if it's the only thing exchanging the air. One single chassis fan (80mm or larger) at the back of the case will draw enough air in the keep temps down. You don't need high speed or high volume flow fans where a 1 Pound note or Dollar bill will flutter straight out. The shape of the blades makes most of the noise and movement of air. Sawtoothed leading edge blades are quieter than straight or most curved blades. Gelid fan's are curved but in such a way as to reduce noise and offer good air flow. Remember we are not trying to vent coal mines here. A little research and common sense will do more than any marketing hype ever will.

    Hi Christopher. Nice video as always.
    For me the GT 1030 has 3 plus points
    1) Low current draw max 30 watts of the bus , so no need for any extra power cables and a small capacity power supply as found in OEM machines handle this well.
    2) While you briefly showed the smaller half height card, this is a strong selling point for small factor machines i have a HP 8200 and Lenovo , both have limited 200-240wat power supply and small factor cases, I have the same passive cooled in the Lenovo and the stock with small fan in the HP - they both perform identicall
    3) Modern games love the 3D graphics, most games on the built in intel video chip ran 10 - 30 fps, more they run 50 - 180 fps , so overall each games sort of runs x3 to x5 times faster in fps
    The passive cooled unit does take up 2 slots, and it is about 1.5 inches longer than the standard fan cooled unit
    PS while i dont overclock any of my PC items, you can use as a utility tool and overclock software the MSI Afterburner program
    Regards
    George

    Just a heads up if it hasn't been brought up already, you can get DVI --> VGA cables for super cheap if you need a VGA input to your monitor. I used to use one for my old TV because VGA looked better than HDMI did out of that video card for some reason.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 лет назад

      Note that this card is DVI-D -- not DVI-I or DVI-A. It hence has no analogue output, so most DVI to VGA cables/adapters will not work. Granted, as others have noted here, you could use an active (powered) DVI or HDMI to VGA adapter, but these are more expensive and sometimes problematic.
