The thing I always liked about this episode is that it really helped cement that Bullock is a good cop, just not a particularly great guy. There are times in the series before this point where you sometimes question if he's crooked or not, but they go out of their way to show that even if he's an asshole and a rulebreaker, he's still on the right side. There's something to be said for the fact that they took the time to flesh out and deepen a side character like this.

Many comics confirm it showing that Bullock is one of the few cops in gotham that is not on payrole. Yes, he is an asshole but his job is nervewrecking and Batman in his eyes doent ease it, but make it worse will all those crazy lunatics of supervillains. So you can understand and somewhat relate to his asshole demeanor.

One thing I've always disliked about Bullock is that more often than not he seems to be there simply as a foil for Batman, and his only purpose is to be wrong about everything so that Batman will - of course - always be right. The problem with this characterization is that the stories themselves adopt different ideological positions, so Bullock acts "out of character" depending on the comic's or episode's ideological slant. Most of the time, he's supposed to be the type of old-school conservative (though that makes him a liberal by Gotham City's standards) who insists that the letter of the law be upheld at all times and that vigilantism never be tolerated. But in stories that depict the GCPD just as sympathetically as Batman, he suddenly abandons his principles and becomes a "bad cop" - someone who wants to bully, maim, or even kill criminals. Adding to the confusion, even in the '90s he was not always depicted as being anti-Batman, or at least not as anti-Batman as some of the other cops. So in the end we have nothing more than a plainclothes detective who makes wisecracks and loves donuts and cigars - something more like a stereotype we would have gotten in the '50s or '60s comics.
It's a shame that what I believe to be the most consistent characterization of Bullock is in DC Black Label's "White Knight" miniseries, which is set outside the overall continuity of Batman stories and thus doesn't count. There we get the most nuanced and yet the most coherent characterization of Harvey; he's a principled centrist who on the one hand calls out Commissioner Gordon for standing by and allowing Batman to nearly kill the Joker, and then on the other hand is loyal to the GCPD's code to such an extent that he takes a hard line against anti-police protesters, especially when those protesters are "traitor" ex-cops.

Lets not sugarcoat it, he's an asshole. He is like House, in that he is a jerk but ultimately just wants to help and save people, and is willing to break rules to do so, except he isn't a genius detective or anything, better than average but no genius. His real positive points, beyond being fundamentally on the side of the angels, are his good investigative instincts (he found the joker in the laughing fish before batman, while acting on a hunch) decent abilities in a scrap, and his ironclad loyalty to Gordon.
His flaws are an abrasive personality, very slovenly behavior and living space, and how his bending of the rules is completely unapologetic, he has lines he will never cross but is far from polite about the ones he will. This all boils down to another House comparison, he has few friends, none outside of work where they have the job, and a shared dedication to build a relationship off of, and is generally alone, because few can STAND him.
He's the guy you can trust with your life when confronting criminal scum, but who is grating when going out for drinks afterwards, and unbearable if you had to be neighbors, much less roommates. I love how lost he is when finding out who was trying to kill him, criminals make sense to him, but the idea that an ordinary person could hate him so much as to try and kill him, was a shocking eye opener. Its too bad we never get a followup showing if he changed but that is probably for the best, either he wouldn't and failed to learn, or he did but either fell back into bad habits/was changed back for no reason with the soft reboot/redesign, or he changes and the writers don't do the change justice or make him less interesting. Hinting at a realization and then never going into his personal life again worked, because we can imagine any of the possible scenarios, and just move on, with the bits of his character we see, where he is still abrasive but entertainingly so in small doses.

Bullock has always been an interesting character in the series. While he could seemingly come off as a corrupt cop, he still sticks to his guns for being one of the good guys. And in this episode, it does show that he wouldn’t want to put the pressure on anyone on the force for whoever was trying to kill him and instead ask the one man who probably would want nothing to do with for help.

Oh, yes! One of my favorite episodes of the series! I love the noir style detective elements and it's always nice to see Batman take on some "regular" organized crime gangster once in awhile.
I also like the fleshing out of Bullock's character, getting a sense of his (not so) ordinary life. His obnoxiousness towards everyone around him, his less than healthy food habits and not very tidy apartment. The episode somehow manages to not make him sympathetic or tragic either. He lives alone and doesn't seem to have many friends but plenty of enemies but he's kinda earned it. I especially like the exchange between him and Montoya at the precinct.
"Hey Bullock. What are you doing for New Years?"
"The same thing I did for Christmas, my laundry!"
It could easily have come across as sad, but you get the feeling that Bullock is content with it. He doesn't seem to bother much with holidays or other social traditions. He has his own daily routine and rituals and likes it that way, wether the people around him are bothered by it or not. He doesn't care.
But I like how behind all the rough exterior he's an honest cop to the bone. It's easy to assume he could be crooked but you can tell he's downright offended by the suggestion when Batman asks about it. He doesn't do things by the book but he's fiercely loyal to the badge! Which ads to the noir detective vibe. And he has put away several criminals since he's not short on people who could potentially be out to get him.
Which is why it's funny that despite all that it's his everyday brutishness and bad demeanor that has driven his landlord to homicidal rage and finally a complete mental breakdown. Batman puts it best at the end where Bullock tells him he owes him one.
"Forget it Bullock! You got enough problems!"

He's sloppy, crass, isn't well-liked, and has no qualms about taking bribes or screwing with his landlord, yet I could still tell he has a code of ethics and genuinely cares about his job. I felt the Gotham show had a more interesting take as him being part of a corrupt police department who regularly turns a blind eye to organized crime and sometimes takes odd jobs from them, yet he takes an honest cop like Gordon under his wing and protects him from retaliation. In retrospect, what I remember most about this episode is a short exchange between Bullock and Renee Montoya, with him telling her that once she gets older, she'll be just like him. Flash forward 27 years later, and we got BIRDS OF PREY, which cast Rosie Perez as a middle-aged Montoya and jettisoned the youthful, idealistic characterization of the character we had seen up to that point for a far more jaded and Bullock-like character. Montoya even wears a T-shirt reading "I SHAVED MY BALLS FOR THIS?" - almost implying that she's no longer even a woman!

Episodes like this are why Batman the Animated Series is so beloved. Not every episode needed a super villain, simple crime stories involving other characters besides Batman really do make this series work. I just wish the last season had stuck to this format and art style.

Harvey Bullock is such underrated character in the Batman mythos. He’s a short temper, load mouth, obnoxious cop that doesn’t take crap from anyone. Despite how incompetent he can be at time, he does have strong sense of justice. Even though he looks just as shady as the criminals he puts away. Bullock his one of the few good cops Gotham has. He’s not my favorite character by any means, but I always found him to be an interesting one. Bullock has actually vendetta against Batman. Their kind polar opposite when comes to the law and they approach it. And have a very interesting dynamic that’s not really explored often in the lore. He’s kind like the J Jonah Jameson to Batman. It’s a shame that writers keep ignoring this character. When he has so much potential for stories. Either they just keep forgetting about him or they just reinvent him when they literally got a right in this animated series. Bullock needs more appreciation.

Bullock had always been the "Bad Cop" to Gordon's "Good Cop" especially in their dealings with Batman being that Bullock was very vocal about not liking the vigilante. It's weird, I remember this being a much better episode because Bullock's situation kind of forced him to co-operate with Batman. The thing that kind of kills it for me though is the reveal at the end because it's basically just a random guy. I would of loved for it to be one of the many recurring villains of the series especially seeing as how Bullock believes Batman is no better than the villains at Arkham, it would be nice to see this as a turning point where he starts to see Batman as an ally rather than an enemy.
Also it's weird for this to be the first episode featuring the Batman and Robin theme considering Robin isn't even in this episode. But yeah the opening theme here feels cheap compared to how great it was previously. I don't even remember them changing the theme song, that original theme is so iconic the only other theme I remember is the New Adventures of Batman and Superman theme.

"A Bullet For Bullock" is definitely one of the most interesting episodes considering the content and is among those that stood out to me the most, and still do.
"Like I said, I don't play the game. If they start looking into my past they may find something I don't want found".
This was exactly why he couldn't go to Commissioner Gordon with his problem. What kind of situations had he gotten himself into and what had he been forced to do to get back out of them? Seeing as how this is Harvey Bullock that we are talking about, I think it's best that we don't know. The odd couple dynamic between him and Batman was also interesting and kind of funny, not the team up I would have expected. Luckily for Bullock, Batman is always willing to help people no matter who they are, how much they may hate him or how annoying they may be. In the end everything seemed to work out and the true assailant was unmasked and captured, the only remaining, and unresolved, problem being that Bullock was going to have to find a new place to live. On a side note, I had found out at one point that some episodes were based on issues of the comic books but until now I didn't realize that this was one of them. Very cool! 👍

Now this is a classic! When i first watched this episode i didn’t like it, but when i rewatched i loved it. I recently rewatched it with my grandparents once and we enjoyed it, i also consider this to be one of the funniest episodes in the show because of bullock’s dopey-ness the music is perfect in my book makes me almost wish the show used jazz music in all the episodes. Fun Fact on the DCAU wiki it says the person who voice Vinnie The Shark was Gregg Berger Aka Grimlock from the transformers cartoon.

My favourite thing about Harvey Bullock is his competence. He's a jerk, but he's damn good at what he does, and the audience can respect that. I especially enjoy how he's good in a scuffle despite (or perhaps because of) his weight, as most shows would've made him useless and cowardly.
Y'know, someone who's all talk and no action with 0 redeeming qualities, because OBVIOUSLY anyone who dislikes the hero MUST be nothing but terrible.

Good companion piece to Vendetta. 'The Improbable Duo' sounds about right. It's interesting how even someone emotionally disciplined as Batman can find his buttons being pushed by someone who gives off strong warning signs of being the kind of bent cop he despises. Vendetta showed he could look past appearances and admit to being wrong, but that doesn't make Bullock any easier to work with. The new 'Adventures of Batman and Robin' season suggests a reversion to more kid-friendly material with an increased focus on Robin mandated by the network, but here he's nowhere to be found and we get a classic Noir mystery with guns and gangsters galore.

Interesting bit about this ep: There are two or three Christmas-based episodes of this overall, more if you count JL/U and the tie-in-comics, but this one appears to occur either between Christmas and New Year's or so close after New Years that decorations are still up. That's a bit unusual for any show, to cover that period.

I always liked Harvey Bullock in the 90s Animated Series. Even as a kid I knew that he was always a good Cop. He's Just not a good guy. And I think people could not tell one from the other throughout the Series. He's not somebody you would want to hang out with, but he's definitely a Detective you would want handling your Case or a case for a loved one. I haven't watched the Series in some time now, but I do remember that episode

I think TAS's depiction of Bullock was a great homage to the classic Noir protagonist of the 30s and 40s, just like Eddie Valiant in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". Bullock is brooding, dirty, gruff, and is also an underdog to a younger and more skillful detective. He also has a chip on his shoulder and tends to be an asshole. Even still, he has his principles and his own sense of justice. It's kind of sad to see how Bullock's last line in the entire DCAU was "What did Robin do to his hair?" when Batman was teaming up with Vergil "Static" Hawkins.
