I got 7 Swedish Flower hens Breese Farms in Mississippi for 5$ per chick. Tolerated the recent 100 degree heat wave really well.

I picked up 2 chantecler roosters last year to mix some cold hardiness into my flock (they are a breed from Quebec). I don't breed pure bred chickens other than my silkies, but the chanteclers are nice because they also have a small comb. My original Rhode island red rooster also had some frostbite on his big comb in my first year with him. It's hard tho watch them deal with the crazy cold we sometimes get.

The lavendar orpington you are holding is a rooster it's comb is to big and red. He looks to be developing well though.

Cool find!! We were looking at the Icelandic land race chickens a while back because of their hardiness and diversity, but decided against them because they are such good fliers. The Swedish look like the same type of bird so you might have trouble keeping them contained without clipping their wings, can't wait to see those first eggs though....massive!!!

I'd also like to get some Icelandics as well. I didn't know about the flying. We'll have to see how the Swedish hens do

I would like to get chickens. But i live in a neighborhood. I can't have roosters I'm don't even think I'm supposed to have chickens. So they have to be quiet. Are hens in general pretty quiet?

the cluck and squock sometimes. I wouldn't label them as pretty quiet. Muscovie ducks are very quiet

If you get 2/3 bared rock hens. Aka " the checker board chicken " because they have a black and white pattern. you'll never know they are there until time to feed them. They are very good with kids, dogs and cats. Don't worry about the other animals. They can hold there own in a fight and the offender won't be coming back. Super quite and friendly. Some people give them to there kids as pets. Hope this helps and if you have any questions about chickens just send it to me and I'll try to get up with you as soon as I can. Later.
