Don't you just love a kid who knows where his priorities are?! What a great episode! I loved the yak breeder. I loved everything about this episode. I was smiling the whole time! I suspect he is former military/DoD contractor, like me, and it just gave me warm fuzzies to see him living a life that gives him so much pleasure. :) In fact, it made me so happy, I am going to watch this whole episode again!
YAK! That ride was awesome :) And, the yak in the house... oh my word. Any chance we can go ride a yak when we come visit you on the Great American Farm Tour?
When I was in Nepal, we used yaks to carry our gear. I loved being around them (but didn't get to ride). Ate yak cheese (best cheese ever) and yak butter in tea for super charged energy!!!
Yak down has to be separated from the coarse hair, but it is possible to do it by hand, or you can buy the down already cleaned and ready to spin. It is definitely a very soft and warm fiber and makes luxurious garments.
I was watching older Bobblehead Homestead videos and he sent me over to your channel. New subscriber. What a fun video. I'll have to catch up on your videos. I'm watching 10/26/2019. Yak in the house - awesome. Wonderful story about the yak.
Just found this video after hearing about Yak's milk and was curious to see what one actually looked like, needless to say, i've found my new favorite animal, look at these lovable big bois, and I'll eventually try a Yak burger since the way he made it sound just seems tantalizing
Found your channel through Top Ten Best Homestead Videos .. Awesome video! I smiled all the way through. Makes me want to bring three or four Yaks onto my camp/homestead. However, I rescue horses and currently my pastures are at maximum for grazing. Definitely will be checking out more of your content. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Keet! Yeah, there aren't many Yaks in the US. In fact, Mr. Taylor (the yak rancher in the video) has the largest yak ranch in the northwest and he only has about 40 head.
I used to work summers at Mesa Verde National Park in SW Colorado. One of the farms at the foot of the mesa had yaks. First time I saw them, I almost ran my car off the road.
Lol... Hello from Joseph Oregon!. I just went past there yesterday! He's a neighbor of mine! Sweet heart! And Those yak are loving this 5 degree Artic temps. Really a fantastic animal for this part of the country. We have short hot summers in the Wallowas and 7 months of winter mountain weather. It's a stunning little town. Nickname Little Switzerland. More suitable animal for this climate and region then for sure. He really does love his animals. I'm vegetarian mostly but I did try the yak burger at T.G. and it was very, very good.
Thank you Lauren. Most of the yaks were not friendly. Some of them were, but Mackloud was exceptionally friendly because of the bottle-feeding and bond he formed with Mr. Taylor. Mackloud is the only yak that gives rides like that.
You heard it Dan, your son wants an ATV! My grandson wants a Yak now, lol. Show your son a tractor with all the attachments, bucket loader, back hoe, etc. I want one of those! Speaking about Little Buddy, we wish Ashley a Happy Mother's Day!
I was screaming Oh No! when the yak started into the house, it took me a second to realize it was on purpose!!! Too funny!! Great video. I learned a lot too. 👍
what a wonderful experience for your son, that was a fun day, i hope your able to get one, just think, you could have a good size yak in a few years, how many acres do you have, i imagine you have to have a certain amount per head.
I have 10 but only about 2 are usable right now. I suspect the average stocking density is 2 head per 3 acres. Yes, it was a wonderful experience! Thanks for watching Robert
I love yaks! If I had one, I'd take him hiking and camping. And he'd help out with the gardening. And I'd let him in the house when it was too hot outside.
Now that was a unique visit! :) how fun. When I lived in Seattle we saw Yak on menus. o.- They look very beautiful, but wow did you see those horns when they were headbutting? Little Buddy is a modern guy Dan...if it has a motor he will ride it! o.-
:) Yes! He's quite taken with the ATV. Regarding the horns - Mr. Taylor told me he is surprised that none of the yaks have ever lost an eye with all those horns flying about during their horn locking.
Big Mac and little mac ride the yak!! Enjoyed the interesting information about the life of a yak. . . wonder if they would cross with an American type beef cow?? Thanks for posting! South Carolina
One thing I will say about ATVs. My niece, my brother, brother-in-law and sister, have all had VERY serious (separate) accidents. I'm talking hospitalization, broken pelvis, broken arms, ghastly contusions, permanent neck damage, concussion, and etc. They can flip. Just saying. Do we still ride them around our ranches? Yes, but after the latest accident right after Christmas, we are hopefully a lot more careful for a lot longer this time. :(
So as I understand it....you getting an ATV? LOL to funny!! Great video! Yaks really interest me. But 4 yrs? Ouch! But really cool video! The Yak ride and the Yak going in the house was really cool!!! - MIke
Hahaha! Little Buddy HOPES we are getting an ATV (I'd really like one, too but $$). I know, 4 years is a long time! I like the idea of a pet yak, though. If you put it next to your horse on the pet expense list it makes it easier to swallow. ;)
Found you on 10 best homesteads. I was smiling the whole time. So much fun. The yak breeder was impressive. But those horns were scary. One wrong turn of the head and ouch :)
lol, that is crazy! However, I have seen pics of Chinese farmers riding Yaks. He has an interesting story though. It is neat to raise some unique livestock. I was looking up on what restrictions there were with U.S. Customs but found nothing against importing animals for livestock....the CDC was only concerned with strange animals like monkeys because of disease. I need to check state laws though as I know you can't raise caribou in Idaho north of the Salmon river, I believe (due to the woodland caribou up there). Really interesting stuff....any highland cattle ranchers up there?
YAK in the house? I don't know about that... I think that's pushing it a bit... Thanks for sharing this vid... very informative. People need this type of info to help them make a better choice in the type of animals they want or would like to raise.
Maybe, we'll talk about that later - translation = Yes, I really want an ATV too, but we have to convince mom that it's something we need to buy lol. Shouldn't be too hard to sell her on it, it's just the price of them that is hard to choke down if you buy new. Something tells me you guys will decide it's a good investment sooner rather than later. Loved this video, I don't think I've ever seen a yak before. Thank you
still trying to sort out if you feed a yak less in the longrun than cow. i get that yak is more expensive, but is that expense from management and land or is it in food? if they are less to graze than a cow i think they would make a good animal on our farm.
The hay cost will be greater with a yak. It requires more hay to raise a yak for 4 years than it does a steer for 2 years (approximate time to finish a steer on grass). Assuming a yak and a steer will eat hay for 6 months out of the year - a yak will eat approximately 5 tons in 4 years. A steer will eat 4 tons in 2 years. You come out a little ahead with beef and you get a quicker cashflow. But this is assuming you are raising it for market. The upside is it is an "exotic" animal that does not require USDA inspection for selling. Also, it is a novelty niche.
Thanks for the great answer! Years ago we ran a herd of 5 or so Highland cattle on this land, but my grandparents also borrowed an extra 10 or more acres of land that another neighbor now has horses on unfortunately destroying his land in the process. Time to go research llamas I suppose. Goats are "Too Loud and annoying" for my mum.
The Grass-fed Homestead they are on my list of want to try again, but they tend to be a lot of work. learning about the llamas, they tend to be less prone to diseases/pests, very easy to manage/ intelligent and they can pack ap tk around 100 pounds and pull carts. I suppose the main thing is that the main cook in the house doesnt like the taste of the meat much, so it is hard to get it eaten.
That was cool would have loved to see them. My interest has always been toward Buffalo. A lot of that due to my Native American heritage & also health wise. Are there any farms in your area or close raising Buffalo? Tell Lil Buddy I said hi, reminds me of my Grand Kids lol.
The Grass-fed Homestead Thank you for your reply. Will you possibly be doing any visits to the Buffalo ranches in your area? Would love to see them & their ranch management.
Hi Mindy! We are across from Spokane on the Idaho side of the border. Practically neighbors! That's awesome you're getting started homesteading! I know a good source of sheep if you want some ;)
We're definitely having a meet up of some kind when Justin Rhodes comes to visit on the farm tour. Stay in touch! There are a few other folks in Spokane that watch our videos. We might be able to organize a get together.
I think you have found your niche.....journalist ala farmer. I really enjoy your interviews and I like how I can hear the person talking, and see their face.

:) It made my day to read your comment. Thank you
YAK! That ride was awesome :) And, the yak in the house... oh my word. Any chance we can go ride a yak when we come visit you on the Great American Farm Tour?
It's so funny you ask that...When we were there yesterday I was thinking... "Justin's chidlers would LOVE this!". -- Absolutely! I'll make it happen.
The Grass-fed Homestead can't wait to see that video
Yes yes yes!!!
I've wanted to raise yaks since seeing them on an episode of Dirty Jobs several years ago! They seem like such wonderful creatures.
I missed that one! Did Mike ride a yak?
Love every bit of it.
:) It was fun!
When I was in Nepal, we used yaks to carry our gear. I loved being around them (but didn't get to ride). Ate yak cheese (best cheese ever) and yak butter in tea for super charged energy!!!
That's awesome! The only yak product I've had is yak burger.
You had me at Yak. Totally jealous. Not sure i would let him in the house though but you never know... if he wants in...
yeah, I'm with you. One of our house rules...no livestock in the house
If they have to turn their head to get through the door... then no.
exactly
Forget the yaks dad, we need an ATV. Great video.
yeah, that's pretty much how it went :)
Where are we going? I don't know it's up to him....😂😂😂
:)
another great video Dan, top content with the Yak man and McCloud. made me smile all through. 😀😀
:) Thank you Pippa. This one was particularly fun to make. I'm glad you liked it

Thanks, Donna!
This is one of my favorite videos. Love Mackloud and Mr. Taylor is cool.
what fun! love Mr Taylor's smile & passion for his yaks, thanks for sharing
:) You're welcome. He is a nice fellow and we really enjoyed the visit
Haaaa ! Little Buddy made me laugh out loud. Took him exactly no time to tell you he wanted a ATV!
:) I know, he was like....riding a yak - whatever --- riding an ATV (we got to drive one while we were there) -- awesome!
Just found this video after hearing about Yak's milk and was curious to see what one actually looked like, needless to say, i've found my new favorite animal, look at these lovable big bois, and I'll eventually try a Yak burger since the way he made it sound just seems tantalizing
What a great guy to show you around and give so much info!
Absolutely! He was awesome

However, I rescue horses and currently my pastures are at maximum for grazing. Definitely will be checking out more of your content. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Karen! We really enjoyed the yak ride. :)
Those yaks are awesome...I would love to have a couple of them!
ditto! 👍
The yak is probably the most versatile domestic mammal behind the dog. It produces wool, milk, meat and can be used for traction and ridding.
Wow! I didn't even know there were yaks in the US! So very much to learn! Thank you, thank you!!! Found you from Justin Rhodes' and I'm subbing.
Thanks so much Keet! Yeah, there aren't many Yaks in the US. In fact, Mr. Taylor (the yak rancher in the video) has the largest yak ranch in the northwest and he only has about 40 head.

Hi, Moe! Thanks for watching and sharing about Joseph. It sounds like a nice place to visit.
Simply wonderful! I had no Idea yaks were so people friendly. As always, wonderful content!!
Thank you Lauren. Most of the yaks were not friendly. Some of them were, but Mackloud was exceptionally friendly because of the bottle-feeding and bond he formed with Mr. Taylor. Mackloud is the only yak that gives rides like that.

8:40 "Where are we going?" "I don't know, it's up to him." Perfect. No big deal, just going for a ride on a yak today. Marvelous.
Hahaha! The spice of life
Saw snippets of your Yak video on Justin Rhodes' channel so I had to see the video. THAT WAS AWESOME!
Thanks Kevin! I'm glad you liked it! We had so much fun riding the yak and making that video :)
That was fun. Thanks for sharing it with us.
It was a lot of fun to make this video :) Thank you for watching
Dan, What a fun watch that was! That's great you and your boy got to have a Yak ride. :) 2 thumbs up!
Thank you Tracy! (you are Tracy, right? name change?) We had a blast!
The Grass-fed Homestead ☺ Yes it's Tracy I just decided to change my yt channel to my farm name. I think it makes sense so people can find me easier.
I was screaming Oh No! when the yak started into the house, it took me a second to realize it was on purpose!!! Too funny!! Great video. I learned a lot too. 👍
:) hahaha! Yes, Mr. Taylor said - "Dan, go in the house and wait inside with the camera on." It was quite a site :)
Fascinating! 4 years is a long time to wait to get to market, but man, the two people you've had on sure make the case for a pet yak! 🤔
Yes! I like the pet concept. As a meat enterprise...not so much
what a wonderful experience for your son, that was a fun day, i hope your able to get one, just think, you could have a good size yak in a few years, how many acres do you have, i imagine you have to have a certain amount per head.

I feel the same way!
There is a short RUclips video of mother yak protecting her baby from a snow leopard.
lovely day out for you both - what a lovely farmer too x
Oh my! My favorite video! How awesome!
that was so funny when the yak went into the living room to eat milkbones!
I know, right. Unbelievable.
Now that was a unique visit! :) how fun. When I lived in Seattle we saw Yak on menus. o.- They look very beautiful, but wow did you see those horns when they were headbutting? Little Buddy is a modern guy Dan...if it has a motor he will ride it! o.-

Thanks Julie :) I agree - they are awesome!
Wow that was so much fun! Instead of bull in the China shop now we have Yak in the living room :)
:) I really enjoyed this one. Thanks for watching Amy
Big Mac and little mac ride the yak!! Enjoyed the interesting information about the life of a yak. . . wonder if they would cross with an American type beef cow?? Thanks for posting! South Carolina
Good question! My wife asked the same thing. I'll ask Mr. Taylor next time I speak with him
We have some "homesteading friends" near us that just got some yaks. So interesting!
Awesome! Maybe you can go for a ride ;)
I will definitely be looking into it😉
That video was so much fun. That owner was very informative. Thank you for the video.
Can you tell me what the breed of you roster Tales? Thanks
You're welcome :) Tails is a blue orpington
Thank you for your reply.

That was really very interesting. Thanks!

Found you on 10 best homesteads. I was smiling the whole time. So much fun. The yak breeder was impressive. But those horns were scary. One wrong turn of the head and ouch :)

I’ve got one in east coast US! She doesn’t live at my house but at a farm near it. She is legally my animal though. It’s possible

I do want one but it is low on the priority list. One of these days...
Could anyone advise me on where to buy weaned yak calves for a starter herd?
still trying to sort out if you feed a yak less in the longrun than cow. i get that yak is more expensive, but is that expense from management and land or is it in food? if they are less to graze than a cow i think they would make a good animal on our farm.

ah, well if the cook doesn't like lamb then that won't work.
That was cool would have loved to see them.
My interest has always been toward Buffalo. A lot of that due to my Native American heritage & also health wise.
Are there any farms in your area or close raising Buffalo?
Tell Lil Buddy I said hi, reminds me of my Grand Kids lol.
There are a few bison ranches in our area - I will tell Little Buddy :)
The Grass-fed Homestead
Thank you for your reply. Will you possibly be doing any visits to the Buffalo ranches in your area? Would love to see them & their ranch management.
UGH, this Yak would have me wrapped around his finger 3 fold. I'd spend all day brushing his fur. I could imagine teaching him fetch.
they would probably make great jerky too
Yak to the future herd of your farm now?
best video on the net!!!
haha! I'm flattered! Thank you!
Hey it's look like little buddy is getting along with yak!! compared to Dexter cows!
yes! He was much less intimated by the yak (which is odd because the yaks have much bigger horns)
"Yakety yak; don't talk back."
Haha! "take out the paper and the trash..." :) classic
Darn! You stole my line, lol.
Yak fiber would be interesting....I know musk ox fiber has some value too....any musk ox ranches, lol?
I found you through Justin R! Where are you guys located? We are in Spokane and starting our homestead journey!!
We should come visit!!!
Hi Mindy! We are across from Spokane on the Idaho side of the border. Practically neighbors! That's awesome you're getting started homesteading! I know a good source of sheep if you want some ;)

The Grass-fed Homestead yes I want to come!!!! Please keep me posted!
That was fun! and I agree with your son. You guys need an ATV!
I would like to get one someday
Does the Himalayan Yaks and American Yaks belongs to the same category or they are different?
I don't know
great vid
Thank you! :)
So.....when are you going to announce that you all will be raising yak on your homestead?#YakAttack

Fun video today.

Doesn't he sell the yak fiber to spinners? Extra income there.
He doesn't but he said he knows others that do
super cool!!!
👍
Very nice guy
Yes, he is great
I want a Yak!
Same here. We're going back in the spring when they calve. I'm not sure I'll be able to resist buying one

Thanks David :)
Can you ride a yak
Like a Bantha!

I think you have found your niche.....journalist ala farmer. I really enjoy your interviews and I like how I can hear the person talking, and see their face.
@9:19 I love it!! Great music and happy yak.
Thank you :) I really enjoy doing these style videos
