I saw the same farming practice of keeping Llama with sheep and lambs everywhere in Australia. It seemed cool seeing them living in harmony. And they actually guard them. God bless your livestock and land. Love from down under :)
The manure from the lama can be placed directly in the garden, also makes great "tea" for the plants as it does not burn the plants with the level of nitrogen in it
you weren't kidding! what an exciting day! I didn't really think about a Llama being a pretty viable option for a little added security! here's to a wonderful, plentiful spring.
Awe they are so cute!!! It's funny how you did sheep and llama. We have sheep and alpacas!! Awesome! Alpacas do no like their face touched either. Have fun with your new babies!!
So excited for you guys, Dan! How cool to have Penny the Llama to guard the sheep. I had my husband watch the video where you and Ashley built the brooder and it inspired him to build a brooder for the poultry we're due to get next week. I had purchased those laminated cardboard things from Premier 1 to make the brooder, but I wasn't happy with it. No top on it and it seems not substantial enough. So kudos to your recent brooder video... our brooder is made from salvaged closet doors and it cost $10. :))
wow! What a full house! :) And Penny was a surprise! Looks like someone is going to have to build a larger shelter hmmm? :) Grass-fed ranch is looking great. o.- ((oh how I love those black lambs!))
WOW DAN!! I'm playing catch up. That's a lot of sheep/lambs!! AND A LLAMA!! So the llama is on loan? How awesome is that! Oh my gosh those lambs are stinking cute. - Mike
Hello guys thanks for the update, nice weather, LOL. Just a heads up I called you guys out on that 30 random facts about yourself I also tagged you in my video. Thanks
That's for thinking of us! Pratt Family Homestead tagged us on that too. I hope to be able to make the video this weekend when Ashley is available. I'll head over to check out your video! Thanks for letting me know
ha ha ... that snow scared me 😨 "it because I'm a Florida guy" Sheep look great. Tess seems a very excellent sheep breeder and loves what she does! I noticed one of the rams mounting someone! So I gress you will soon separate them? I truly hope you can find the time to make tea from Lama stool ! I'm interested in seeing results. that's because I raise red wigglers solely to make tea for my kale adiction😊 . Oh! another great video!
After watching this vid a week ago, I've been looking for every Katahdin vid I can find. Might be my pasture revitalization crew, red meat producers and compost manure providers (for the chicken & rabbit powered compost factory) in a couple years.
How good is a llama against predators like coyotes, wolves and dogs? Nice to see your sheep... Will you be building a bigger shelter to lodge them all under the same roof? Love to see your homestead grow... :)
Llamas are pretty good. The are weird in the eyes of a predator and predators don't like different/weird so they tend to stay away. If they do advance, the llama will send out a loud alert which can scare the predator away. If that doesn't work, the llama will chase away the predator. More shelters are coming later this year. Stay tuned
Your breeder did a wonderful job weighting her sheep. Since you are a small homestead how are you going to weight them without owning an expensive scale?
I've always loved lama's from a distance. Although I love animals and they always take to me, lamas have never liked me. I don't know why, but something about me bothers lamas. They always get upset and start spitting. Weird, huh? ;-)
Hey there, it is I, the artist formerly known as Manchurian's Playplace. I am wondering, now that you have a llama, are you still planning on getting a livestock guardian dog? Do you have any predators bigger than coyotes in your area?
I would love to connect with Tess, I have a small flock of Katadhin and am looking for a totally unrelated Ewe. I am in Bend OR.. not too far from you guys I think.
Hi Dan I live in Barbados and I also have sheep but you need to separate the rams from the ewes as soon as they are done nursing because if he has everything working corectly down there he can produce semen as early as 3 weeks old
I thought she was going back when we got our dog but the owner said she didn't need Penny back right now. Penny will be sticking around for awhile. I like having her here

Thank you Ashish!

good to know! Thanks Michael!
Very nice. A loaner llama is awesome. As usual, its great learning something new from Tess, what a treasure she is.
indeed!
Wow what lovely looking group , love your videos thanks. For all the trouble you go threw to bring them to everybody. Have a great day
you weren't kidding! what an exciting day! I didn't really think about a Llama being a pretty viable option for a little added security! here's to a wonderful, plentiful spring.
Thank you!!
How exciting! I know you guys are thrilled to have your new family members home! I am so happy for you all! The Llama is very cool!
Thank you! Yes, were so happy to have them home!
Another great video. I learn so much from you and Tess. Thanks
You're welcome! :)
Wonderful! You all look so happy! Can't wait for future videos.
Awe they are so cute!!! It's funny how you did sheep and llama. We have sheep and alpacas!! Awesome! Alpacas do no like their face touched either. Have fun with your new babies!!
do alpacas ward off predators too?
Yes they do! They are so amazing to watch.
I was coming home this evening, and on the radio, there was a talk about how sheep tend to wander......thought of you! lol.
:)
so exciting! I'm glad you introduced each one.
I figured it would be easier for viewers to keep track of them that way
Snow!!!! Love snow and cold weather!!!
I love your videos
Congrats on getting the sheep! We're curious about Penny and how Llamas go about guarding... we know you'll keep us updated.
yes, I wil! :)
Love your new sheep/lambs!!! Also really like Penny!!! Should be interesting for the next few days! :)
Indeed!

Oh wow! $10! That's awesome! I wish I could say the same about ours. Thanks Joyce!

Yay! Sheep back on the homestead!!! Congrats!
Thank you guys!!
Nice looking sheep!
New to the channel. Found you while researching Katahdin sheep. I'm hoping to get some myself soon!
Thank you! I love our katahdins and can't recommend them enough! Let me know if you need any help.
Glad they are working out for you!
Thank you, I am sure I will have questions as this will be my first time owning sheep.
Thanks ladies so cool
cool! congrats on the addition to the homestead
thank you!
Yeaa! The sheep are here!!! And a llama! I want a llama. I love the temp shelter
I really really like the llama! You should get one :)
It's nice to see Tess again
She will be in some more upcoming videos ;)
How cute the are.
WOW DAN!! I'm playing catch up. That's a lot of sheep/lambs!! AND A LLAMA!! So the llama is on loan? How awesome is that! Oh my gosh those lambs are stinking cute. - Mike
yes, a loaner llama! She is great and will be sticking around for awhile
Oh my, I thought you just bought 4 ewes, I was surprised to see all the babies. How in world would you change Penny's halter? They are all beautiful.
Those lambs are so darling ❤️
they are!

Thanks trebor! I will separate the boys from the girls at around 4-4.5 months old. They have awhile to go before they are mature.

Awesome! I think they'll give you what you're looking for
I was a little jealous till the llama came out. :-)
you don't like llamas?
lol. Llamas are fine. They have huge personalities. They can be persnickety on occasion, though. Usually when you really don't want them to be.
I already love Penny the guard Llama... :)
me too :)
Veronica's lambs are very attractive but my favorite is Connie's ram lamb!
yes, he is a great looking ram.
love the black and white lambs! what kind of predators do you get there? starry hilder has wolves yikes!
we have a lot of coyotes. There are wolves nearby too but I've yet to experience that. Starry doesn't live too far from us
We do too even in the Central Valley of California. They are the reason I stopped free ranging my chickens-killed my best layer right outside my house

Thanks Dan I didn't know this...
Do you have a shotgun or rifle to help protect the herd?
Your breeder did a wonderful job weighting her sheep. Since you are a small homestead how are you going to weight them without owning an expensive scale?
I will keep an eye out on craig's list for one
The Grass-fed Homestead I was hoping you were going to come up with a cheaper way to weight.
Great video
thank you
WTG impressed by your progress. Keep it up. Do you have a patron account?
I don't but I've been asked by a couple other folks so I'm considering it
Will you ear or sale the bucklings?
What are you thoughts about the guardian Llama after a year? Very interesting Thank You
They are a good part of the protection team
@@TheGrassfedHomestead I appreciate your feedback, Thank You
I've always loved lama's from a distance. Although I love animals and they always take to me, lamas have never liked me. I don't know why, but something about me bothers lamas. They always get upset and start spitting. Weird, huh? ;-)
odd indeed!
So nice to see sheep back on your property. What kind of predator pressure have you been having? Are the chickens ok?
Chickens are ok - we have large packs of coyote really close.
i like the lama is it working out?
well i guess i should have commented after watching yhe video lol
Hey there, it is I, the artist formerly known as Manchurian's Playplace. I am wondering, now that you have a llama, are you still planning on getting a livestock guardian dog? Do you have any predators bigger than coyotes in your area?
Hey! You finally changed your name! Yes, we are still getting a LGD. We have wolves and mountain lions in the hills surrounding our valley.
I would love to connect with Tess, I have a small flock of Katadhin and am looking for a totally unrelated Ewe. I am in Bend OR.. not too far from you guys I think.
Not too far at all! I can get you in touch if you send me an email: dan at grassfedhomestead dot com
what breed of livestock Guardian dogs do you plan on getting
Akbash
So Tess didn't talk you into leaving the brown ram.
not a chance!
Hi Dan I live in Barbados and I also have sheep but you need to separate the rams from the ewes as soon as they are done nursing because if he has everything working corectly down there he can produce semen as early as 3 weeks old
Alex Phillips ha ha you saw that ram too I'm guessing..
Thanks Alex. Our sheep are not ready to reproduce until around 5 months old.
how many acres of land do you have?
They have 10 acres, I believe.
correct
Did you loan the sheeps and the llama or did you buy them
The llama was on loan but I bought the sheep
Is Penny staying for good? you did say that she was loaned to you by the owner?
I thought she was going back when we got our dog but the owner said she didn't need Penny back right now. Penny will be sticking around for awhile. I like having her here
Oh, well i hope she stay's there forever. She really adds life in the homestead
And i hope Blue is OK he seems kinda sick.
If the llama doesn't like her face and neck being touched and grabbed, then why are you doing it ?
Are you going to keep the lama? or are you returning it once you get your dog?
The llama is on loan from Tess. She is a delight and I wouldn't mind keeping her but I don't think she is available
I'm glad you guys have someone like Tess around, she is an amazing woman.
What is your predictor pressure?
coyotes mainly but we also have wolves, mountain lions, and bears
I see sheep and llama I click
Awesome! I'd do the same thing. Thank you

Thank you :)
