Thanks! I just checked out a few of your videos. You aren't slouching on your videos either ;) It looks like you are shooting at a high frame rate. 60fps?
Yea, with G7X. Plan to sit down and watch some more of yours as well. So fun to see folks doing similar stuff. There are just not that many high quality perm/homesteading/family vlogs out there. Or I haven't found them yet.
Little Buddy, you also don't want the birds to sleep in the nest boxes because they poop when they sleep; keeping them out of the nest boxes at night will keep those beautiful eggs cleaner.
The roosting bars are not all on the same level. One is lower than the others. The highest one is pretty much the same level as the nesting boxes. I can't get the bars any higher due to ceiling clearance and the layout of the tractor. Another viewer has mentioned that, regarding the level of the boxes vs. the bars so you are probably correct. I'm still turning the nest boxes closed in the evening. It's not been a burden at this point.
Those milkcrate handles are large enough for a mink/mongoose/weasel to come in and kill all your pullets. They rip the guts out. I used a shock trap to kill it, then fenced up the holes. I would replace your 1x3 board door with a solid piece (looks like the walls are well ventilated) to prevent entry. And stop fighting with the chooks. Maybe they prefer the boxes because of warmth? Try putting crates on the ground, too; then you can pull them out to retrieve the eggs. If they lay on the ground, use a rake/hoe/stick/net to scrape the eggs over to where you can reach them. Or build a second floor for roosting. But you're just fighting against nature this way. Rinse off poop. Shit happens. haha
I've decided to raise chickens in my small backyard. With your setup, how many chickens and geese are you raising? It looks like 2 geese? Male or Female or both? Are the geese there for protection of the birds? I'm looking to build something similar. Thanks for sharing.
We have2 ducks, no geese as of yet. As for chickens, we have 1 rooster, 5 hens, and 4 pullets. We are getting 12 more pullets this winter. We might look into getting a guard goose next year. Do you have an HOA or neighbors that complain? The geese can be pretty loud.
The Grass-fed Homestead Okay, thanks for this information. The city I live in does NOT allow for livestock in the backyard, but, I'm doing it ANYWAY! I'm also gonna grow a garden in the front yard. I guess I am a REBEL WITH a cause. LOL! I do have neighbors nearby though, and I want to be respectful of them as well.
Awesome! If everyone started doing it the cities would have no choice but to accept it. Check out muscovie ducks - they are super quiet, have a superior quality meat yield, and will also provide you with some eggs.
I've raised three small backyard flocks of chickens. They had nest boxes in the coop, as well as roosts. The most dominant birds would occupy the nest boxes at night, while the others took their place on the roosts. We had no trouble getting eggs from them all. In my experience, a chicken that needs to lay is gonna lay, wherever and whenever it pleases. Can you explain the issue you are trying to resolve with all the nest box jiggering?
Maybe turn the crates so the openings face the middle (and the fake eggs won't get taken)? My ceramic eggs got taken, I only found 1 out of 6, 4 of my wooden ones got taken, but only a few feet away, and they got bite marks...hard bite marks (naughty raccoons and possums!). Now I have 2 broody hens, can't wait for mixed up, mutt chicks.(Rhode Island Red rooster and Ameracauna, Isa brown and leg horn hens, they ought to be cute!
I know this isnt going to be any help now but maybe someone will be helped. When building your coop make sure your nests are lower then the perches!!! The chickens want to be as highas possible overnight to stay safe.
Hi Eric. Yes, most of the folks who watch my videos know about my relationship with Justin Rhodes and how he got my channel started. This video is obviously a tip of my hat toward the ninja master. Thank you for watching
Wow way to be original. This guy is just doing everything justin rohdes does. If you want to see where this guy gets his information and ideas check out Justin.
If you've watched some of my other videos, you'll have noticed that I credit Justin a lot with information he has taught me. The chicken tractor, the chicken feed, dust bath, etc. Why wouldn't I do what Justin does? Justin has a lot of experience raising chickens. I've had chickens for just over a month. Wouldn't it make sense to follow the information he shares? I've referred to Justin as "the Apron Wearing Permaculture Chicken Ninja Master" in several of my videos and the title of this one is another tip of the hat to him. Thanks for watching Thomas.
I know how much work you all are putting into your videos. Very interesting content. Keep it up.

I think the soaking starts germination which increases the phytASE..the desired enzyme which disables the anti-nutrient phytates.
well said :)
LOL, apparently your chickens are ninja masters!!! :D
Nice tips. God bless your farm and family.
Are you roosts higher than your nest boxes? Maybe if you can raise them higher they will prefer the roost bars to the nests.

The Grass-fed Homestead I agree! Okay, thanks for your guidance. Stay Blessed. :-)
This is awesome. I subbed your channel.

They were using the boxes for sleeping and laying eggs on the ground where it was difficult for me to access. I wanted them to lay in the nest boxes
chickens don't go after the yellow jackets?
sadly, mine don't
ok, thank you. I've watched a few of your videos and you do good work. I have other questions but I'll save them for when I've caught up.
Thanks Daniel!
Nice job story telling!
Thanks Caleb
Where do you get your grain? I've been to north 40 and A.finch and I can't find whole grains;(
Hi Mindy, send me an email if you don't mind - dan at grassfedhomestead dot com
What USDA plant hardiness zone are you in?
6a
put your roost bar higher then the laying baskets
I can't in the tractor.
how come your not moving your chickens like Justin does? is this a future plan?
I moved them several times before they went to the chicken yard for the winter

Better idea! Thank you. Post pics of those chicks when they hatch! facebook.com/grassfedhomestead/

I think you cut the opening a bit too deep.
On the nest boxes? I think so, too. I noticed mine are wider than Justin's but I didn't think it would be an issue. Wrong!
or more egg ?
Kinda an uphill battle lol
Yes! They are making me work for my eggs
do you guys know he gets all these facts and chicken ideas from Justin Rhodes

Are you Justin's agent? If not, then who cares? He's giving credit, and he's got his own style. Go find another site to troll.
Thomas Eggers as long as someone gives credit where credit is due I don't see anything wrong with that. We learn from others. Do what works.
Justin would LOVE that people are copying him!!!!
