Payola$ - Eyes Of A Stranger

- When I was a little kid there was a fantastic TV show on one of the TV channels, entitled "Tropical Heat" aka "Sweating Bullets". It was a story of Nick Slaughter, a former policeman and now private investigator, who - along with his friends, Sylvie, Ian, Spider, Carillo and others solved the most puzzling criminal mysteries - all in a wonderful scenery of a fictious tropical town called Key Mariah.
The series had several trademarks. Among of them were Nick's ponytail, his jeep, passion for women, Sylvie's red hair and wit, Spider's charming foolishness and many other things - including a fantastic intro song "Anyway The Wind Blows" by Fred and Larry Molin.
Around 8 months ago I stumbled upon this song on youtube, here it is:
• Tropical Heat theme- A...
Reading the comments of guys saying "My childhood flashes before my eyes", I felt in a moment how many years have gone by and shall never return... I wanted to see what other people write about the song and series, and therefore started reading the comments. One of them was written by a person from Canada. I clicked on his profile and saw that among his favourites there was an enigmatic song "Eyes Of A Stranger" by Payola$. I had never heard it before, but the mysterious face of man with a lot of make-up on his face that featured the video made me curious... I went on to watch the video and listen to the song.
It was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have heard.
Then came the standard process of "googling", and soon I knew a lot about the band. They were a sort of another "one hit wonder", who lighted up like a candle and faded so fast that almost no one noticed... it didn't discourage me though. I got several mp3s of the band ("The Best Of The Payolas") and to be honest I didn't like them too much - they were nowhere near as good as "Eyes..."
As far as I remember, the video that the Canadian posted was watched around 200.000 times and had lots of comments, often including very wise remarks of people all over the world. Unfortunately, this amazing song was removed from youtube some time ago, along with hundreds of other great tunes. It makes me wonder - for whom is the music created? Who found anything bad in the fact that people came to this website every day, finding some joy in those beautiful songs and enlightning their sad, bleak lives?
Anyway, I wanted to do something to change the matter. With the help of my good friend (and by the way - one of the most intelligent and promising youngsters of the world - and I'm not exaggerating) Sz.G. I made this video. It doesn't show the actual teledisc, as it would probably be treated as exceeding copyright laws and therefore deleted within a few days. It just shows the photo of the wonderful group of people, who became famous in the 80's with their great hit, "Eyes Of A Stranger". The rest, as they say, was history...
Here's the lyrics to the song:
Can I touch you to see if you're real?
Is it nothing this something I feel?
Can my heart take the strain?
Or will it break down again?
In your lips I sense a danger
You've got the eyes of a stranger
Have I been sleeping for all these years?
Is it magic that makes you appear?
When you walked in the room I felt my heart race
But you acted rude and I looked in your face
In your lips I sense a danger
You've got the eyes of a stranger
In your lips I see a danger
You've got the eyes of a stranger
In your lips I sense a danger
You've got the eyes of a stranger
In your lips I see a danger
You've got the eyes of a stranger...
=============================
I've got two small requests my friends. If you found the text above helpful in any way, could you please:
1) try to help me with the "???" in the lyrics? I'm not able to figure out what was sung there... I'm not a native English speaker, but I'm sure that some of you are and would be able to hear those few words. I'd be very grateful.
EDIT 6th May 2007: thanks for submitting the correct lyrics Liskacz! Now everything is OK.
2) If you enjoyed this song, try this one... the band is from Britain, and that's the only major difference - they also released one big hit and later faded from the music scene, they were the members of the New Wave... Their biggest song is beautiful, touching and the type of the ones that you'll never forget. After hearing about the flowers screaming their joy in summer light you'll too find that no matter how sad and bad is everything around us - there's still beauty, charm and happiness that is within the reach of our hands... it's just our task to find it and never let it go.
Follow this link, you won't regret it.

One of the best and most underrated songs of the 80s
As soon as an American artist covers the song it'll get a billion views. Same thing that always happens. Canadian artists don't get any radio play in the US. The stations shut them out.
@@taekwondotime They played this on KROQ in Los Angeles a pretty good amount plus it was played in the movie Valley Girl for a long scene. That said, epic song and still underrated.
@@jonesjones7057 also in a Miami Vice episode season 4 badge of dishonor
I would have to agree. And I was a metalhead through the 80's.
@@taekwondotime this band got radio play quite a bit in San Diego California back in the early 80's when it was put out...the video was on MTV regularly
1982. Sophomore year of high school. Killer tune. What a great time to come of age. No internet, no smart phones, no iPods. Just cassettes and great music. I feel sorry for the youngsters today.
I totally get your vibe....
feel you.
I graduated high school in 1986 and I couldn’t agree more , my 20 year daughter says she’s jealous of my generation !
I was born in 2000 and wholeheartedly agree. We weren't made to work with technology the way we do.
No kid should have the option to sit inside playing geometry dash instead of enjoying their childhood and making memories that go beyond a little dopamine kick.
I was born in 1964 and I can't get enough of this song. They should of picked a different name for their group.
Seriously, this song escaped the 80's, 90's and all the 2000's without it's due... Just an amazing song!
I know right?
it was on an episode of Miami Vice, so that speaks to how good it is.
One of the best songs of the 80s. Period
Opps with the down thumb. Perfect Fucking Song! Lllooovvveee it!!!
It's been sleeping all of those years
Still jamming in 2024!
I graduated HS in '83. My Spanish teacher, Mr. Mal Parker(SMHS/Santa Barbara), instantly gravitated to this song with the rest of us.
Great music transcends everything!
How was this NOT a worldwide hit is beyond me???? Every bit on par with the most classic of the 80's hits like Aha's Take on Me or Hall & Oates Out of Touch, etc.
My Dad was blaring this, while we were driving around town one night this past Summer. Ah, good times...
the 1980s will never die
This was my mom's favorite song on Vally Girl dam i was only 3 now im 38 still jammin,RIP MOM LOVE YOU ALWAYS AND NEVER GUNNA STOP
Rest in peace Mom 💗
Fransisco,
Your mom had impeccable taste. I'm sorry she's gone but this is a song I've cherished since 1983 and maybe we are onto something with something like that. Go figure.
Fransisco,
This is the best song I've ever encountered.
I first heard this sassy cut, on Miami Vice back then, my high school years...your mom had great taste! God bless her soul.
I woke up this morning & that movie was on a channel called "this", that scene was on with that song playing...awesome.
I'm putting together a massive compilation of 80s music, this was the first song on my list.
me to
80 infinite
it's been 4 years , care to share playlist ?
add Passenger by iggy pop. cool sounds of that era. Then add the fanatic. Late night MTV fondest memories. I wasted the decade, but still remember it
We know a women, with the Eye of Chupacabra...run my friends..run. Or your bones will become furniture. Lol!! Love the song.
I think this song is too perfect.
Still get goose bumbs from that chorus
40 years ago I was 17 and a Junior in high school when this song came out, wheeew where has the time gone? I had completely forgotten about the Payola$ until I stumbled across Valley Girl on Tubi. I had a horrible time when I was a kid. Music like this made my life just bearable enough to get up in the morning and get out of my parents house every day.
I would love to go back into a time machine please. The 1980s rule forever.
ignorance is bliss.
Bit Funk, but being bitter because some1 disagrees with you isn’t.

Just heard this on the radio in the background.
Immediately came back as a song I loved in the 80's.
Came home searched for it and now I have it saved in my You tube library.
Still grabs me like it originally did.
You know it's a good song when Valley Girl & Miami Vice both used it!
Miami Vice was where I first heard this superb track, Michael Mann had an ear for great music in that series. Brought in a lot of top Canadian talent that U S ex wankers never got to hear unless we were close enough to the CanAm border to get stations like Hits Fm out of St Catherines and the mighty Q-107 out of Toronto back when they were decent stations, now they just mostly suck.
Miami Vice was a stylistic masterpiece. Aesthetically, there was nothing better.
Awsome i noticed it in valley girls 40 yrs later
Vaporwave Papi it came out in 84 with valley girl. I was a freshman ha!
Miami Vice episode : "Badge Of Dishonor"
Brings back memories when I was in high school. Great song!
I heard this today on the radio and searched it up as soon as I could when I got home. And I love it it's such an amazing song. :)
I woke up with the lyric of this song on my head this morning. I don't know why, it has been 30 years or so since first time I heard it, it has bring good memories since high school. When I used to have a huge crush in a green eyes girl. I must of have listen over and over again. YOu got the eyes of the strangarrrrrrrrrrrrrr :)
canadian rock at its finest !
+NIZZY NICK it maybe a Canadian band ,but the lead singer is British. paul hyde came to Canada when he was a teenager.
Bob Rock is Canadian
@@saphireroze001 And Bob Hope was born in England, try convincing anyone he was a Brit.
So underrated. Haha LOVE IT been listening to this song since the 90’s as a kid
This was in that movie Valley Girl back in the day
+Robert Lukacs Yes! That's where I first heard it- loved this song ever since
That soundtrack is how I got here
The one with logan paul is better
Why can't I like this song more than once?
First time I heard this song on the radio, I thought it was some lost Police track, lolz.
Yeah a lost police track, but the radio somehow plays it. lol okay.
Are you talking about The Police band, the guys that sang songs like 'Walking on the Moon', 'Message in a Bottle', 'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic', songs like that? If so, then same for me :D First time I heard it on the radio, I also thought this was by The Police!
FastCarsNoRules220 Yes.
yes i know what you mean! it did come out while the Police were still recording. it was very similar, til you hear the voice!!
@@FastCarsNoRules220 yeah they have a similar sound
Man I'm lucky I found this, I had the chorus in my head. Good thing the title is the chorus. Nice song. 80s sound reminds me of my childhood.
This is the 1st time I’ve heard this song and I grew up in the 80s! Fantastic song, I love it! 👍
I want this song played at my funeral.
Great music stands the test of time.
Do you remember David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars? Do you remember the incredible guitar playing, singing, string arrangements of Mick Ronson, lead guitar for the Spiders? Mick produced this song, and the LP that is was on. Great track. RIP, Mick Ronson. PS: This song won "Single of the Year" in Canada. The Payolas later had to change their name to Rock and Hyde. Another great track, "Where is this Love?"
My favorite song from R n H was dirty water. Still is my 2 best songs from them.
Payolas guitarist goes on to become Bob Rock. World famous record producer as well.
I remember wanting this album just for this song and being determined not to buy it new for that reason. I looked for it every time I went to various used record stores. No luck. One day I went up to Melrose Ave. in Hollywood and was just flipping through 'em and there it was, $0.29 what a bargain with the plastic still on it! Great bass and use of echo.
Still a banger in 2024!
This intro strongly reminds me of The Police 'Walking on the Moon'
I wonder how much influence The Police was on this tune. A lot of characteristics.
+txowl Agreed. The whole song really. It's got a dreamy, mystical quality to it. Sounds like Walking On The Moon / Wrapped Around Your Finger.
+txowl I thought this was Sting until recently, forgive me i'm a 90's kid who doesn't listen to this style often.
i actually thought it was by the police until 2018 lol...
Did you think the same for "somebody I used to know"? wouldnt blame you if you did it was such a rip-off
I love this song. First heard it in Valley Girl.
same
I'd never heard this song in my life till about 5 years ago... and it, despite being so plain in its nature as to how I came across this song, never strayed from my mind. Easily one of the best songs EVER conceived by man. I would love to see someone try and tackle a cover to this song. 21st century! HOP TO IT!
wasn't well received in the us,ofa cause of the name ... regarding the "payola scandal"
This song was from Valley Girl with Nick Cage. Great song and loved the part where the guys gets thrown out of the party and driving away says fuck it we're going back- Gotta love the 80's.
Memories of 7th grade and the crush of my life. :). So glad I grew up and partied during the 80s. Kids these days don't know how much they missed out on!
i just love the meloncholy feel of this song.
Lovely complex reggae-clockwork sound, well done. Their band was named after the "Payola" scandal in the 1950's America, where music producers bribed radio jockeys to give songs more play.
Quite possibly the best Canadian band in the 1980s. I was never a huge fan, somehow never really checking them out, but in retrospect they don't strike a single false note. Just solid rock music!
Bob Rock !
Turn up the volume ! It's the 1980s again ! I was 28 when this came out ! Born and raised in New York City.
A long Lost Classic Great Song and Beat ..Some Info About Re This Cool Band.
The Payolas (or Payola$) were part of Vancouver's new wave of bands and active in the Canadian music scene for a decade from the late 1970s, recording several albums and singles that were Canadian chart hits. They disbanded in 1988, but reformed again from 2003 to 2008, issuing a new EP in 2007.
The band's name is a reference to the payola scandal in the United States in the early 1960s.
I remember KROQ radio station in SoCal 80's. Living in Hollywood and going to night clubs of LA. Like it back then love it now compared to current popular music.
Yep...same here. I lived in the valley back then. I listened to Rodney on the ROQ. (Rod Bingenheimer) He's now on SiriusXM and still spinning good tunes.
My God......i miss these times....
Needs more playtime on the radio.
Hell yes it does!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK!!!!!!!!!!!
This song was one of my favorites from the 80's and I went looking for it on iTunes and Amazon, not there! So, glad to find it here, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heard this on Sirius XM and blasted it. The 80's were great. Music had this yearning quality to it. Miss that.
Heard it while watching Valley Girl. Had to look it up
That movie had a great soundtrack.
puts me at the beach in the 80's!
this song is everything to me.
Can I touch you to see if you're real...classic..miss the 80's
i feel high while listening to the song
try P.O.D's cover of this song. That feeling is real.
Thanks for posting. Love this tune, one of the '80s tracks I totally forgot about.
when it hit u again did u get chills?
+I spent 6 hours trying to figure out my username -- Actually, yes.
T.A. James good. good. let the transition flow through you.
5 stars and favourited! this is a good song, reminds me of my buddy who passed, its been two long years... great song...
Heard this today for the very first time. Banging tune.
Still a fab 80's hit in 2018! THX!
Classic track ! Brings me back to Victoria BC, Memorial Arena watching the Cougars play JR hockey. This song was played to welcome all opposing teams. I love this track !
Great song. Saw these guys open for Rush in 1982 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.
Im 13 again, hanging out in the kitchen after everybody went to bed. smoking cigarettes and listening to Kroq 106.7 sometimes I would be watching this little black and white tv too.
Cigs at 13? Well to each their own
1983
Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed reading your story of discovering this song. I think of this song whenever I read comments about New Wave being simply the slick mass marketing of punk. I disagree heartily. New Wave made no secret of its affinity for the synthesizer and was more atmospheric than a lot of punk. It also openly blended all genres of music. Thanks again for sharing...
This song brings back memories of my teen years in the 80's and my alma mater, Council Rock North! Thanks for sharing!
" Love My Way" another 80s goodie from this turbular movie!
1987 graduate hs. This song just popped into my head today as I was eating pizza at the New York New York hotel in Las Vegas.
I like to call the random playing of songs in our heads from decades ago "psychic radio".
(We will all have this senior moment eventually ;-))
Love this. Grew up in LA. 18 yrs old when this was in "Valley Girl" (along with all the other greats: Plimsouls, Furs, Modern E....)
Miami vice brought me here, alot of good music in that serious.
this is one of my favorite 80's songs that nobody knows about...Love it!! thepayolas -eyes of a stranger!!!
I almost forgot this song from a deep part of my childhood. Thanks for uploading it for us all.
When music was music.
I have been trying to think ofthis song for such a long time. It was one of those songs that was always stuck in the corner of your mind, and whenever you would try to hum it or remember a few lines the song would get misconstrude and turned into the melody of another song.
I always knew that it kinda sounded like the police, but after scowering through all their songs...It became almost hopeless.
And here i go and stumble acrossed it by accident. Thanks for posting this...GREAT TUNE!
Totally underrated songs of the 1980''sat least I thought so.. Especially with the Police and Katrina and the waves, Blondie and Adam and the Ants... In nutshell just a badass song
I love the description the guy put for the song. I love hearing little stories about how someone stumbled upon a song, very cute :)
Classic Canuck!!!!! Always loved the drums. The first time I ever saw Rachel Weisz was in an episode of Sweating Bulllets!
Don't forget that the guitar player was who wrote this song and the demo ended up being the real recording because it was so good that the producer said it can't get better than that... back when the guitarrist was working at little mountain studio so they recorded it for free during the nights...to this day this guitar player who wrote and recorded this song is one of the best rock producers in the world, non other than BOB ROCK.
Heard this song on the radio today and loved it. Sick as hell!
Great song! I spent much time in Canada in the late 70's and most of the 80's. There were SO many great bands in the Great White North! Not to mention the beautiful ladies, eh?
Miami Vice Ep: Badge of Dishonor (3/18/88) brought me here.
Yep! The memories!
Sierra Milano I'm totally looking forward to watching that episode now that I have the entire series of Miami Vice on Blu-ray
Vice for life
Saw that episode on the first run. Threw a VHS tape into the VCR
In my city we got jack fm where it’s 70 80 90 music and came across this. Good song. I’m still young wet behind the ears
My first concert in the early 80's I had ever been to in Victoria , B.C. at the Royal Theatre a memory never forgotten to this day. An amazing performance that was bursting with talent at its best and to think from my B.H.S. that I graduated from in 1984. Rock On !!!
was so magical back in the day..being stoned an listening to tunes like this one ! ya mun !
First heard it in the movie Valley Girl.
Scott Cushing This is the best comment I've read
Best soundtrack to a movie
Yeah this song is very hard to find. I heard it the other day on a station that plays really random songs sometimes and this was one of them. Top notch...I couldn't believe I never heard it before.
Such an under-rated and unkown band. Thanks for sharing.
Real music.
I just watched Valley Girl again the other night. It's been years. I had forgotten about this song. Amazing.
Wonderful time and song!!! Thanks for the upload!!
This song came in to my mind yesterday. I remember it well from childhood...think I was 17 when it came out. I'm a proud Canadian. Thank you for your writing and your post.
Great song! Good Canadian kids! Great drumming towards the end of the song - from 4:00 onward. Fond memories of 'air drumming' to this.
What a jam
I saw this video in 1983 just a few times, but the song has remained in my head all these years. I want to add it to my iPod library, but they don't sell it through that site! I wonder why?
Was watching the movie valley girl on cable and heard this for the first time. Had to look it up on yt
91X had this on heavy rotation in the 80’s.
Such a great song. Why hasn’t it been played on radio?? Or was it??
I may be young but ik so much better music in the 80s then now! Classics will go down in ages...the music now can just go down the tolet
I discovered this song on my own. No reference to any movie or show. Love it!
I remember this one from the 1983 movie Valley Girl...
This song came out in Valley Girl with Nick Cage in 84 when I was a freshman. The album no stranger to danger came out in 1982.
So many good times, and memories from this decade...
"ENIGMATIC" as quoted from AMG! I agree! I was lucky enough to have seen this band perform live in the early-mid eighties on more than one occasion ......both in TORONTO Ont, and in BUFFALO Ny!!!!
This is my first time hearing this band I do believe , I thank a friend for posting on the book. Thanks Dan this is the way-o
I wish I could look into the eyes of a stranger rather than the eyes of people I wish I'd never met - Guess I have something to look forward to
Vancouver represent. Lived in Vancouver most of my life.. Driven around numerous times listening to this song.. Just found out they were from Vancouver. Crazy.
