2019 Mercedes-AMG W10 w/ 2022 Pirelli 18-inch Prototype Tyres Testing at Imola!

- A couple of days after the GP weekend at Imola Circuit, Pirelli did a two-days test session to further develop their 18-inch tyres which will be introduced in 2022 with the upcoming new technical rules. Mercedes-AMG was the team chosed for this test (the 4th out of 10 test sessions, totalling 28 days, planned for 2021) and the victorious W10 EQ Power+ from 2019 was made available for this purpose. Of course the car was slightly modified to host the bigger sized wheels and featuring the 2021 livery of the W12 E Performance due to sponsors' contracts.
Honestly I wasn't bother to see them mounted on a current car, they didn't even seem that much oversized for this car's design. Maybe it was just because of the wheel's black colour which camouflages them a bit even if their dimensions and total heights are different compared to current tyres. Anyway remember that the new 18-inch tyres will be suitable for a total different car design.
Enjoy this video from the first day with Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel!

These videos always make you appreciate the V6 sounds so much more than when they're on TV
they are awful anyway
@@rekordea I like the sound still. V10s and 12s sounded better but this sounds fine too, for me at least.
yes, the cars from previous eras undoubtedly sound better, but these still arent too bad. Appreciate them while we have them, we'll have V4's before we know it lol
They’re bad compared to V8, V10, V12, but in their own regard they sound good
In person they are pretty clean. Of course it doesn't blow the ear drums off but it's actually pleasant to not have to go deaf when watching.
When a random dude on youtube can capture the speed of the cars better than professionals
different positions, places they’re allowed to broadcast cameras, signal strength and also the cameras themselves
Broadcast use static and usually focus on the car solely and close up for sponsors rather than the actual corner.
DSLR vs Static
@@oaz8 on the onboards mostly
It's insane how fast the corner in those cars, tv angles never reflect that, it's mind boggling that something can turn at those speeds and that a human is in it.
I believe the TV live footage is deliberately slown down by 0.05th of a second to make the actions easier to see
@@MainMite06 also they dont have that big of an fov to the camera which also contributes alot
the turn in is so fast it looks unnatural, they must all have necks of steel to do that for 50 or 60 laps with a massive helmet on
@@MainMite06 don’t think so, it’s just the camera angles they have
@@cathalfolan8441 its a core part of the workouts they do, focus solely on rigorous neck workouts
Why on earth don't the engines sound this good when all grouped together in a race broadcast on TV!?
Because sky has a filter on them, for whatever reason
@@tacitus5665 Its because Sky TV lowers the volume to allow the announcers to talk
They don’t sound good.
@@MainMite06 nope, an actual filter.
Try the opening MotoGP race on UK's ITV4, couldn't hear the bikes at all :(
Coverage this year is shocking.
They're so fast it almost looks like a cartoon
The way they change direction is insane
@@brandongao3675 yep, the downforce is insane

@@Axel22250 you commented on my comment lololol

I’ll prob get crap for this - but the current gen of F1 cars sound...dare I say really good in person. Tv does not in any way do them justice. No they do not have the “hellish” frightening sound of the v10s but I’ve really come around. It’s ok to be nostalgic, sometimes things in the past really are better, but nostalgia can also be a disease
I agree. For me what makes a cars sound good is if it has distinct sound that sounds cool. Take the Merc w11 or 10 in the video. Idk how to explain the sound but it’s cool. Screening v10s sound amazing but we gotta appreciate all sounds of Motorsport.
tbh i prefer these cars over V8's especially when i went to silverstone 2019 it confirmed that
@@tanoooo finally, someone who shares my opinion
As somebody who never watched f1 until DTS, I can say(nostalgia free) that the v10s and v8s sounded much better than the v6s. The v6 albeit still really nice, just maybe not for fq
agree
Your footage looks and sounds better than the TV footage!
By far!
Definitely! People who say that they hate the V6 sounds NEED to look up vids like this on YT. This sounds way better than the TV broadcasts probably ever will.
@@bradysmith3871 that's because it a single car on an echoey track
Way better than tv coverage 👏
Bozzy manages to make this car look like a rocket ship and the f1 cameras look like the're on a sunday drive
Well, I mean... technically they are on a sunday drive.
They don't look "terrible" but I still prefer the current "fat" tires they have now. Perhaps this new look will fit better on the 2022 cars.
They will be covered with wheel covers unfortunately..
@@balintblazso6069 Really? I thought they would look similar to the F2 cars.
@@kyleb7435 no, the renders where confusing because they put a wheel spoke pattern on the aero disk. Kind of like the 2009 cars but bigger
@@JB22. Ahh gotcha didn't know. Thanks!
18s under wheel covers vs current fats? I take current fats. But I also understand why the shift in rules. Gotta keep shit fresh.
By the way, love your videos, listen to them all the time.
You got a fantastic knack for picking up the growls/whistles/ITB sounds.
Truly, doing gods work.
The audio here is so much better than the TV presentation. Really can hear the turbo going nuts in this video, never seem to hear it (over crofty screaming over Martin bundle here in the U.S.)
Id love to hear more of the cars like this video but during race weekends.
Yeah I miss speed channel’s coverage of f1. Hobbs, varsha, and matchett didn’t seem to be the screaming type lol.
I love the camera angles! You really get some perspective on just how quickly these cars can change direction! Amazing!
1:08 Entry speed level: 1000%
3 year old kids have less grip on their mum's hand on their first day at nursery 🤣
I would definitely say that they look a little strange on the current generation of cars. I think it will be a little bit like the halo where it will look odd at first and then in the end we'll readjust to them, not noticing them all that much.
If I'm not mistaken, the rims will be covered, right? Anyways, I agree. It'll look better on the 2022 cars
@@DanishAZ-mp7tm I'm not sure about that! We'll have to see when the new cars get launch at the start of next season.
@@DanishAZ-mp7tm yea the rims will be covered 🤮
@@DanishAZ-mp7tm Like 2009's?
3:28 these kind off shoots should be used in the f1 broadcasts.
Just like Nascar do
2:05
That's another one
F1 always used that one on turn 4 monza
Even though the PU sounds inferior to the past generations V8's, they do sound meaner when the wastegates on the turbo are fully deployed.
v6 turbo hybrid doesn't sound that bad
Much better than 2014..
but they are way more quiet than the v8/10s
@@fionn1206 I know
Well this v6 engine is a winning formula
Pun intended
They have came a long way. Much better than at the beginning.
Look at the way this W10 handles corners. It's incredible.
Like a efffffing Slot car...jeezus
the visuals and audio of this video are better than anything FOM puts out
2:58 A wild radar gun appears lol
I wonder how much the smaller sidewall will affect suspension design and tuning. I imagine the current tire's sidewall does a good amount of work in the overall suspension system.
Also, I love how this track is squeezed in amongst the houses. Must be great if you're a race fan, otherwise not so much lol
@1:16 This really reinforces how effing fast an F1 car is, especially the AMG W10 which drives like it's literally on rails that is bolted to the track along with industrial glue.
Your mic setup must be really good, this sounds exactly like I'm standing trackside in Montreal.
Hamilton is absolutely SENDING IT through the corners!!
Imola still rocking that old skool look. Love it.
the circuit is magnificent but aramco colours ruin the aesthetic
Still can’t get my head around those cornering speeds.
Imagine trying that in a hellcat or something😂
Because when you actually try it, your head wont be around anymore, it just... Popped of lol..

D: Bozzy on the scene. Great footage
5:29 If I wanted to convince someone that the V6 sounds good, I'd show them this clip
awesome camera view at 2:02
Nah
You mean 2:05, right?
Imagine the AMG one sounding like this uff, it would be top 3 best sounding production cars.
5:52 this is my favourite part of the video.
Another great Bozzy footage which helps to get over this useless „no spectator“ time which hopefully comes to an end soon!
They actually sound so much better than what I thought.
Brilliant as per usual Bozzy 🙏👍
That Merc sounds so epic!
That Merc V6 sounds sooo much better than the rest of the current f1 engines
I hope the rear tyre get larger abit to match the looks of the 70-80s cars
They already are, if you look at pictures from the top, they look good and large
I strongly hope that we will never witness this inhuman horror
@@MrAsetgraffiti that’s just your personal taste, not the undeniable truth.
Ah hahahaha this will not happen
@@ceboz I never claimed this to be an undeniable truth. It’s still an atrocity to the human eye though..
I want to see w10 with it's original livery plus those wheels, it'll look absolutely mad
I have a tip for those who dont have earphones .....put it at max volume and next to your ear....im not even kidding...it sounded scary ...these types of engines are underrated, everyone says they sound bad but when you do this method....they sound almost as good as the old v10s and v12s.......no joke like im serious...
Bozzy, the best. Thank you again
Those tires are looking lit
Best channel i found on RUclips 💯
These v6 sounds so much better in person
2:35 is one of the coolest shots I’ve seen in a while. Gorgeous as always Bozzy!
Nem é pq sou fã da Mercedes, mas é o ronco mais cabuloso da F1 sem sombra de dúvidas. Arrepia até os cabelo do @! é o fuguetão da Mercedes, pretão com essa borra prata, insano demais.
Epic catch as usual.
Great job by you. This almost looks like the official tv feed
looks way better
The current v6 sound better than the 80s v6 change my mind
Change your hearing aid batteries
More aggressive love the snarls and growls
I prefer these to the V8s honestly. They have more characters imo
It sounds as good as when I went to the 2019 Spanish Grand Prix :)

Imola circuit is so beautiful
F1 can learn a thing or two about recording audio, holy hell!
I love the difference in sound as they go over the kerbs.
and i really like the look. only took me minutes to go from "huh those tires look really tall." to "yeah this looks right!"
The tall tires does however make it look as though they are about to tip over.
Great engine sounds
Next year the cars will look the sexiest
Look soo much better without the hubcaps, I really hope F1 will get rid of them ughhh
Those wheels definitely don't look as good as the current ones, but they honestly don't look that bad. Interested to see what the new cars next year look like
Important to remember that the aero on the W10 isn't build to handle the tyre squirt from the new 18-inch tyres.
Nice save at 5:40
They look lit. 🔥
The grip is monstruous !
Pass It! - 0:07
Pass It Pt.2 - 5:23
They look weird on these cars to me. I reckon they will look better on 2022 cars.
Looks awesome in my opinion! Looks like it's a really stiff ride but that to be expected when the car wasn't built with these wheels in mind.
Sounds Great 👌
I really REALLY like those new wheels
They sound pretty good. Especially off throttle when the exhaust growls almost animalistic
Is it me or does this video really show how insanely fast they’re going through the corners. Something you can’t really grasp on the regular footages.
Great sound and images! As usual! Grazie mille!
Yep 2021 i miss you
We want the classics!
The wheels like this look so much better than with wheel covers. I get that they want better aero, but how much would a wheel cover really affect performance?

pause at 5:13 what a beauty!
I know it's a 2019 Mercedes - i.e., a quick car at the best of times - but that looks FAST.
I thought it might look goofy but it's fine. It seems similar to an indycar sidewall. I'll forget after the third race of the season.
So beautiful
Grande Ste! Sei andato giù a Imola? 😍
Thats strange...I like it!
...Huh. That looks pretty good. Sold.
looks great
IDK why they got rid of the separate waste gate ports, These pre-22 cars sounded awesome.
I think it's telling just how big these cars have got that those 18 inch wheels don't even look disproportionate.
Tracks limits is still a thing here!
larger wheel, more alloy surface area to aid tire cooling
Finally, beautiful wheels on F1
You can say what you want, but I think current F1 cars look way better with the 18-inch tyres. Maybe it's because the tyres actually look like tyres and not small toy things with the car dimensions.
Thanks for adding the drivers name. Always like to know.
Now I see why F1 Drivers have lean bodies and thick necks. The speed in the corners are mind boggling…,.Good lord ! 😱
I would like to know how i6 engines would sound like in f1, 14k+ rpm and turbo sound. damn that would be great
Not gonna happen PartiBoi :)
