    I thought him one of the gods then and, as the years move on, even more so now.
    I cannot listen to these memories without getting a bit choked up.
    That voice, the technique, the musicality, YES, THE MUSICALITY! the diction, the passion, the quality of soul,
    and then to have it encased with his great good looks and stage animal presence....
    what else is there?

    My first Corelli opera was Fanciulla. At the end of this aria the Sherriff knocked him down and the audience was horrified. Of course, I got his autograph. And he was so appreciative of us teen girls he tenderly touched my friend's tears wet cheek saying to her sobbing comment, "I can see."

    You’d be surprised how much negative criticism Corelli got even in his prime years. The established writers on music (yes, we used to have such people) remembered Bjoerling and often called Corelli vulgar and tasteless, and objected strongly to his scooping. Callas had even more vicious press in her early career. Given the total collapse of vocal art today seems incredible.

Thus the worship around singers like Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau.

      No one is perfect and Björling had virtues which Corelli lacked, but despite his shortcomings Corelli had an exciting and awe inspiring vocal quality and a world class technique. It's late, nevertheless not to late, perhaps, to recognize who was the best tenor in the second half of XX century. Not Pavarotti, please, but Franco Corelli.

    Is this not at A=440? It’s slightly lower than my clavinova’s pitches and I can’t figure out why

    • @abcdefgh-db1to
      @abcdefgh-db1to 3 года назад

      It's possible that it's 432, the Verdi tuning ( don't think Puccini used it though ) or it might be because of the transfer

      del Monaco was only good in Otello, Samson, Canio-and even there he always is more melodramatic than tragic. In this role as in many others, where is the poetry?

  • @sugarbist
    @sugarbist 6 лет назад +8

    I love Corelli’s voice, but I find it annoying when people say the best ever about any tenor, except for Caruso. Even though Caruso was the benchmark tenor for every singer that followed, he too was not the best in every aria or selection.imo, I recognize Caruso as the greatest tenor ever even though he is not my favorite. Enjoy

      I agree with you. Although, I was quite moved by Corelli's version here, no one voice is for every aria or role.

      I agree that it is annoying when people say, on this level, he is the best tenor-although he is my favorite Italian tenor-but then you go on and say "except for Caruso, etc. How can that be, without at all diminishing the historical importance of Caruso?

      @@labienus9968 Sorry, I don't believe seeing your statement earlier, but I will try to answer appropriately. Yes, I say except for Caruso, who I think was the original interpreter of arias and songs, and the foundation for every tenor that followed. Caruso's voice also transcended from lyric, to lyric spinto and then finally to a full spinto tenor with some dramatic impact when needed. I also believe that Caruso went through these transitions without losing his beautiful quality of voice. Let me also state that even if I enjoy some other tenor voices rather than Caruso's, I still think he was the best tenor in history. Enjoy
