@TheWiseMonkey8888 Totally agree. And Giacomini was in his mid 50's when he sang this . The power and stunning resonance of his voice in this piece is just wonderful.
An added comment: Giacomini was 54 years old here, which is an age when most tenors consider retirement, or at least cutting out challenging arias. He was still at his peak!
Unbelievable. Sung beautifully, every note with sensitivity. You would suspect that with such a rich lower register, like a baritone, he is going to struggle with the highs...but no! They are as good as can be, effortlessly delivered with stunning clarity and power. A tenor who deserves more fame. I can't stop listening to this.

Giacomini was a great dramatic tenor in his prime, although at times somewhat inconsistent. However, on this night in Modena in 1994, magic happened. During this concert, Giacomini's singing trancended the common, and must be termed a masterpiece. Truly stunning.
I heard him sing la Boheme when he was 70. I was very close to the stage, he looked old and sounded like a god in his 30's. Such a fabulous voice then at 70. He should have been much more famous and much more recorded. He truly deserved it. Bravo maestro! Mille Grazie.
@@michaelrorer362 actually Kaufmann sings with a dark, covered sound which has some similarity to how Giacomini sang. Kaufmann's sound is artificial and weak though. If he looked like an accountant ( as Giacomini did) he would have no career
I like Giacomini's sound, but he is the forerunner to someone like Kaufmann, he artificially darkened his voice. Compare Giacomini to his predecessors such Del Monaco and Corelli. They had voices that were 2 - 3 times bigger than Giacomini without the extra darkness and weight. That was the problem for Giacomini, he came from a time just after Del Monaco and Corelli, that was the dramatic blueprint that people were used to hearing. OF course he would be a huge star today, at least he still had nice squillo. Kaufmann is a light lyric tenor far over darkening his voice into a muffled mess. Over darkening the voice makes it smaller.
I have found this tenor, today, for the first time. I had never heard of him and I don’t know why. He’s simply magnificent, one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. This is unbelievable. Just that metallic and full sound that he has, it's piercing. His placement seems so on point. I'm just in awe. It's effortless. This is true art.
Interestingly enough he was taught the Melocchi-like low larynx. In that school the voice isn't placed. It's all about opening the throat and using appogio.
I think it does requite a propper placing of the voice, as much as appogio by diaphragm. That's why squillo is as powerful as it sounds. I think THIS is the best and healthiest technique for singing verismo properly.
Alex Orozco there are definitely some singers that place the sound and get squillo, but from what I know (which def. doesn't make me the end all, be all) Melocchi influenced singers don't place the voice. I feel like my judgement must be impaired because every time I listen to him sing this, it seems better than I remembered it! It's by far the best rendition. It's how dark it seems, how strong.
Someone pass me my jaw? It's on the floor. Literally. I know you don't tackle this piece unless you CAN do it... but this was SO full-bodied it left me speechless.
Che meraviglioso ! Giacomini's huge voice is well controlled here and his legato and phrasing are flawless. And those ringing B flats give me goosebumps. Che peccato that he was not more appreciated here in the USA.Nowadays, with what we have,he would have been king of all the dramatic tenor roles at the Met for instance.Bravissimo Maestro Giacomini ! Tante grazie, tante grazie.

I'm actually not familiar with Giuseppe Giacomini, and I clicked on this video out of curiosity, and I am Impressed! A full, rich tenor, and solid in the highest notes! He compares favorably to the biggest names in opera. For this aria I would prefer Giacomini over Pavarotti, whose voice has brilliance but not as much body.

What a marvellous tenor. Not like the ghastly second rate singers we have to listen to nowadays. ClassicFM please note. Thank you so much for posting this.
I am so surprised to 'discover' this tenor ..fuck, what a voice from such a strange outside package ! He looks like a guy you'd see sitting opposite you on a train, a bland non uninteresting dweeb....and I've been listening to tenors for 35 years or more..so glad I've heard him sing..gotta love youtube still
This is at the absolute prime of his voice. THIS concert. There are plenty of early recordings of his from the early 80s that don't compare (although plenty of good ones). Anecdotally from several sources, he was considered the greatest tenor on the planet (singing at the MET) when he was "on." No one could touch him on a good day. Unfortunately for him, and some other great tenors of his age like Salvatore Fisichella who is equally as good in his own rep, those "three other guys" cast a pretty large shadow over the tenors of the late 80s and early 90s unless you were "in the know."
In an Aida chorus rehearsal. This dude shows up, looks like he should be teaching math. Then he opens his mouth. Truly shocking, how amazing the voice is that emanates from this little man. Next rehearsal, one of the other tenors in the chorus brings plumbing school brochures for the section.
Legato that stratches from here to heaven,, propelled by glorious ringing high notes! This was thrillling singing made better by the seasoning of the gift!
Yes, operatic singing perfection is indeed possible! This is it! Impeccable vocal technique within the scope of the Italian School, excellent Appoggio, excellent breath control, excellent aperto ma copero, excellent fiado, excellent phrasing and diction and what smooth cantabile. This is truly it folks: everything in one package! And a “manly” dramatic tenor voice! All the elements of perfection. Grazie infinite Maestro! Veramente bravissimo!
Concordo assolutamente che Bepi is the BEST in questa aria.
Unfortunately I’ve never gotten too invested in opera but I think that’s going to change. I do not exaggerate when I say that the last high note made me shed tears and gave me goosebumps. Not to mention the emotions it made me feel. Just incredible

Someone pass me my jaw? It's on the floor. Literally. I know you don't tackle this piece unless you CAN do it... but this was SO full-bodied it left me speechless.
Ouvindo pela enésima vez. É de chorar. Jesus, quanta beleza cabe numa voz! Perfeito.
This made me weep, wow, so amazing!! He was born to sing this!!
My favorite rendition of this aria, bravo Maestro!
magnifico.
Such a voice , such a human being. Farewell Maestro Giacomini.
Solo brividi… meraviglia pura
Bruno Prevedi

He's just too fucking good. Deserved to be 1000% more renowned than he is.
Makes my ears and heart do a happy dance every 10 billion times I hear this.
Bellissimo, incredibile voce, una grande sorpresa. Uno splendore! Grande Giacomini!
Grandissimo, voce meravigliosa, forse dimenticato meritavi tanto, ora riposa in pace,
Such a sad news. One of the last great tenors. Rip Maestro
A very special voice: dark, more like a baritone. The high notes are brilliant, with very much unexpected "squillo".
Listen to bjorling and you have two perfect performanced. Bjorlings squillo is to die for
He is a tenor
Barone Vitellio Scarpia or baritone with high notes:D
Barone Vitellio Scarpia well all baritones dont jave to sound the same bruh
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia My voice teacher used to say that Thomas Hampson was a tenor with no balls.
Ch'ella mi creda libero e lontano
Sopra una nuova via di redenzione
Aspetterà ch'io torni
E passeranno i giorni
E passeranno i giorni
Ed io non tornerò
Ed io non tornerò
Minnie, della mia vita mio solo fiore
Minnie, che m'hai voluto tanto bene
Tanto bene
Ah, tu della mia vita mio solo fior
Great and wonderful voice!!!!
BRAVO!!!!!
+John Schofield In english, please.
+Hildegerd Haugen Thanks for your answer;I was saying that when I made my debut in 1999 as w tenor,my singing intention was inspired in maestro Giacomini's vocal approach. Then after an illness due to my diabetes (2004), my physical vocal approach changed (lost 40 kgs;was a muscular 140kgs in my 6.5ft. tall and ow only100kg).Never could find again the eassy way to follow his vocal path, until now.In my daily vocal workout finded again my vocal path...wat hing ma.Giacomini has helped me again onstage as well in my rehearsals.Thank you very much for shari g this great film material with all us (never meet maestro Giacomini in person, but sure I am big fan!!!).Best rega4ds.John Schofield
+John Schofield Ok, the weightloss made it difficult for you to sustained the fat sound you had before 2004.
+Hildegerd Haugen Yes!!!,all my muscles where weak. Then,in a desperate effort, squeezed the sound too much. After trying even Rigoletto and Don Pascquale (sanged those in 2010 and 2012),returned to I Pagliacci ,Tosca,Cavalleria, etc .eventhough not yet full recovered, restarted my stage activities...guess that still need some training...watchi f great tenors as maestro Giacomini, help and inspire me a lot.Best regards to you (I speak and write fluidly in 3 leanguages;spanish, english and italian. This all due to my family roots;english greatgrandfather, italian grandmother and spanish and german grandparents from my mom's side...guess that german is a little weak for me,ha,ha,ha!!!)
+John Schofield I speak russian, english and german together with my native norwegian. Regret not learning italian since I love Florence.
Giuseppe Giacomini, molto bravo, grande tecnica e grande imposto della voce. Vanto Italiano
E' morto ieri, aveva 80anni.
He's amazing !!!
1:02 - this note blew me away
Simplemente espectacular… bravissimo el señor Giacomini
Totally insane. Incredible.
Commuove! Spacca il cuore.. Mitico 😔
Without a doubt my favorite performance of this aria. :)
the Best performance of thisAria, amazing, amazing!!!!!!!
What a god among men. There are no voices like this anymore.
Has to be the best rendition of this aria! Corelli with a close 2nd but this man's voice is so fascinatingly brilliant, to have that depth and colour and still have huge ringing notes at the top end! It really is a one in a million voice! Brilliant orchestration also!! A day rarely goes by without this being played at least 10 times. I can only hope that people start to appreciate this largely unnoticed voice!!
listen to Del Monaco 1954 - he is the best on that aria
@user-bd9hx8zi2r maybe, but in general I think GG was a better tenor than MdM. His artistry was more complete, his voice more polished
Try Jan Peerce also - another great version.
@@marksmith3947 His voice might sound huge, but his voice was actually 3 times smaller than Corelli and Del Monaco's voices. He artificially darkened his voice.
Thank you RUclips. This one of my favorite arias but I never heard of Giacomini before last week. Preserving this performance is increduble.
This is exactly what it is ! PERFECT This is unbelievable. Just that metallic and full sound that he has, it's piercing. His placement seems so on point. I'm just in awe. It's effortless. This is true art.

That evening in Modena... one of the best recitals ever recorded.
You were there?

@@eugeniogentili1048 Moldoveanu is very underrated, like Giacomini. Both should be more famous than the three tenors.
Incredible, what a voice!
Dam, that was beautiful!
Baritonal timbre in the middle range with a thrilling top. Absolutely great performance. Bravissimo
This guy has performed this aria better than anyone else and I've listened to them all.
I totally agree
BRAVO!!
My God! This is perfect! Sublime! What a master Giacomini is!
Magnificent!!! The Bestever!!! Thanks!
What a marvellous tenor. Not like the ghastly second rate singers we have to listen to nowadays. ClassicFM please note.
Thank you so much for posting this.
I am so surprised to 'discover' this tenor ..fuck, what a voice from such a strange outside package ! He looks like a guy you'd see sitting opposite you on a train, a bland non uninteresting dweeb....and I've been listening to tenors for 35 years or more..so glad I've heard him sing..gotta love youtube still
+Ray Hughes He is absolutely amazing.
It's the eye glasses!! Such a joy to hear the word "dweeb". You must be between 50 and 55 yo!!!
Fuck is Domongo-Terfel-Caballe e cetera-mafia, that sells their record and puts great singers in darkness
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIUSEPPE GIACOMINI BORN ON THIS DAY (SEPT. 7, 1940). YOURS IS THE GREAT VOICE OF THE CENTURY. H-B & MANY MORE.
Concordo assolutamente che Bepi is the BEST in questa aria.
Che meraviglia, trasmette tantissimo ,emoziona e incanta.
Unfortunately I’ve never gotten too invested in opera but I think that’s going to change. I do not exaggerate when I say that the last high note made me shed tears and gave me goosebumps. Not to mention the emotions it made me feel. Just incredible
