An awful lot of armchair tenors leaving comments about Mr. Kaufmann's technique. I am Franco Corelli's biggest fan, but he isn't coming back, folks. Sit at home and listen to his La Scala recording, or see Mr. Kaufmann - well, I don't know of another tenor today that could meet the demands of this role vocally, scenically, and dramatically, which he achieved superbly. I'm extremely grateful to the Met for giving me the very great pleasure of watching three superb acting singers put across my beloved Fanciulla. For me, it truly was a miraculous production that left me in tears at the beauty of the music and acting.
Jonas was fantastic I was at the Met during this performance and his voice filled all the auditorium of 3,800 people, I was at the Balcony. His sound is harmonious, wide and dark not shrill or forced or pushed. The top note was great, a real open throat sound, like a baritone that can open up on a top tenor note. I have heard bigger voices at the met and lyrical tenors with a "prettier" sound and perhaps he is not the loudest helden tenor in history but on Saturday he gave a note perfect reading of a role that suits him perfectly. Bravo Jonas.
This was an absolutely glorious opera! I loved every minute of it! So different than all the other Puccini operas. It now ranks as my favorite Puccini opera!
It was, as you describe, absolutely glorious, but musically, it’s actually not so different from other Puccini operas. The costumes, setting, etc.: of course, they are all very different, but the exquisite orchestration and the passion in the music is very, very much like Puccini, I think. There’s a lot of La Bohème and of Tosca in La Fanciulla; perfected, perhaps but still the same style of beauty. The particular awesomeness of today was the monumental interpretation.
I do agree it is a great quite underated opera. The production setting reminded me of "La Boheme" for its darkness, but the love triangle is quite the same as in Tosca, except of course for the happy ending.
What an incredible experience! SO different from Puccini's other operas. A whole new Puccini for me. This gentleman was extraordinary ... what a gorgeous voice, what wonderfully nuanced singing, what a charismatic performer. Yes, I'm raving. Primo tenore, BRAVO!

I was there!! Terrible weather in New York on Saturday, but worth the effort to see this outstanding performance. Kaufmann, Westbroek, and Lucic were excellent.
Kaufmann is an excellent actor, and while he isn’t Corelli (no one is) he is the best tenor we have at the moment… so you can either complain or listen.
The vocal production is as throaty as it's guttural, with distinctive register breaks. Notes off the stave are squeezed out without any build-up and in many sequence smudged. Legato is as abundant as rainfall in Sahara. Stylistically, he's all over the place in addition to the fact that he is channeling his inner Renee Fleming in that every word, every sentence is fussed and tweaked to the extent that any sense of spontaneity is lost. Those comparison to the legendary Jon Vickers by certain so-called critics is simply preposterous. The Canadian's voice is naturally produced and is employed with the greatest artistry, whereas the voice of "the most gorgeous thing on the lyric stage today" (so claimed by thousands and thousands of queens around the globe) is weirdly produced, sounding synthetic and grating.
There were moments a Kaufmann did not sound well especially in high register. He’s great in the middle. Why everyone talks about his good look? He acts very well, but the look? I guess everyone preference.
I do like kaufman but maybe not so much in Italian opera,I’m not saying he isn’t good I just am not a fan of the heavy cloudy sound verging on baritonal, for me he lacks the ring and thrill of a Corelli or del monaco but that’s just personal choice
This aria was excellent, but the ending of Act II was incredibly dramatic, the most intense experience I've had at a Met broadcast. This is why people go to the opera. I need to delve further into La Fanciulla. BTW, a chorus of boos to the naysayers. They sound like some Frank Rich screed, with complete failure turning on some arcane distinction.
whoopsala I totally agree and can never see what all the hype is about, sure he has a big baritone voice but it lacks excitement has no clarion ring to it,it’s dull in my opinion

R Arnold 0:44 and 1:43. The vibrato is getting wider and the voice is getting tired. He anchors the voice to get his top as well which is what Jose Cura did and it's not pretty. This rep is far to heavy for him so he sounds pushed and bland. You realise this because he's constantly sharp on top as well.
Manrica Ajo oh so because he's the "best tenor today" means he's great? Means his technique is flawless and he has no strain? Btw he's not the best tenor today.
How utterly stupid it was of this director to have the fat sheriff approach Kaufmann in the middle of an essential final phrase. Yes, the foolish director interrupted the music and seriously destroyed the emotional effect of this moving aria.
Man I love Jonas Kaufmann, but this role imo doesn't suit his voice. It sounds a bit pushed and forced. Plus, when he goes to the top note (Bflat) it 's sounds stuck and the vibrato is a bit irregular.
He will make a fine baritone some day sounds like he has sinus issues sounds all blocked up try del Monaco In fact any other tenor would sound better than this, maybe he was having an off night

My only issue with this staging is the set! Only the scenery in Act 2 matches the grand beauty of the music.

This is a pretty average performance for him. He isn’t considered the best tenor performing at the moment for nothing.
