Especially with gloves on too, you're almost always better off using bare hands because you might feel the danger before it's too late. Gloves can catch in pulleys and drill presses, etc. and then your whole hand follows it in.

No surprise he made it as far as he did! The best vehicle I've ever had in the snow was my '06 STI with Blizzaks. It was truly unstoppable and would just plow through snow. I've never even come close to driving anything else through 2.5 feet of snow like I did in that Scoob. The only reason I got stuck was because I backed in my driveway and it jacked up the rear end and sat it up on the underbody. Man, I miss that freakin car! 🤣

To be fair to Fred, any small truck with a decent amount of power and good tires is going to out-do a one-ton dually in the snow. Duallies are notoriously bad in the snow since you have four fat tires in the back trying to plow through the deep stuff. Plus Fred probably weighs twice as much as Hillbilly's truck so it wants to sink in rather than float on top.
As to getting stuck: We always had two categories for this back in my off-roading days. You were either stuck or you were temporarily immobilized. Stuck is when you need to get outside assistance to get moving again. Temporarily immobilized is when you stop moving, but are able to get back on the trail without getting pulled out. You might have to dig or rock back and forth for a while but if you can get yourself out you're not stuck.

Tire chain tensioner or adjuster is what they've been called since I was a lad, whether they are made of springs, rubber bands or with them new fangled bungee cords you kids are accustomed to.
I always kept a full set of cleated cross bar chains in my service vehicle and spare tensioners as they have been known to go off with Clementine on occasion. Just like the song, Lost and Gone Forever.

If it is getting dark and you are stuck and don't know what to do call 911 and tell them you are stuck and it is getting dark. This is a life threatening situation, so like Robbie said call the experts. Also make sure you have at least warm clothing, and a blanket in your car in cold weather just in case you break down and have to wait for someone.

I miss my subaru. I had a 97 impeza turbo and a 00 forester turbo. Stiff coilovers, yokahoma neova grippy tyres and they both did not get close to stuck where I don't dare to drive a open diff 2wd. Casually drove through a muddy forest road, had so much mud in my wheel I could not go faster than 60mph before it started shaking itself apart. Got send out to get an idiot out that thought it was a good idea to park in wet muddy grass field with plenty of parking space right next to it. Wouldn't not have attempted it without my subaru. Also I pulled a stranded unimog that promptly shut off and blocking a busy lane onto the roundabout. Didn't need to go far to get him to the side of the road where he wasn't blocking rush-hour traffic. Honestly subaru fan for life.

I turned around and offered to help him in my XJ, he didn't want to be pulled out because my vehicle had GA tags. It was my rock crawler lifted, lockers and setup. My response was Merry Christmas and I turned around in front of his stuck car drove through the snow in the ditch and left, heading back to hospital where my mother was.

I drove my 1980 4-wheel drive hatchback Subaru through axel-deep snow for 20 miles and had no problems. In some situations I have gotten stuck in snow when the snow would pack up under the skid plate and take the load off the wheels resulting in no traction.😊

Attach ropes to through the wheel spokes and pull it out from there. I would keep a snow shovel on the truck instead of a regular garden shovel. Put together a snow environment kit and mount it on top of Fred's cab. 'Ready to go for snow recoveries. '

In Europe people drive in these kind of conditions with Subarus, Quattro, xdrives etc. Unless the snow is so deep it warrants an suv, awd sedan will easily make up hills like that. The snow honestly didn't seem too deep except for that one corner. The benefit of awd sedans is that they're a lot lighter than suvs so that helps.

Happy new year! So, the XJ are fairly valuable, as off roaders love to build them, (the make great rock crawlers), however, for living in, road trips.. I'd highly recommend a 1st gen Seqouia. 04-07, you can usually pickup a good one for around 5k. I can imagine you could get more than that for the XJ. Seqouia will go a million miles, Ive had a few, all equally reliable. I helped my 24 yr daughter build one, and its been flawless for her as well for past 3 years. Meaning, nothing but oil changes..
Anyway, highly recommend looking into it, I think you'll find how consistently reliable and capable they are.. not to mention, very comfortable for long trips, and very safe. I would consistently get 20 mpg on long trips with 33" tires as well. I've also had a 2000 XJ sport, so i get it, fun rig, but id never choose it over Seqouia.
