Hey Jimmy, I’m a boat builder on the Gold Coast in Oz, The little cracks in the back end of the leading edge cap are from differential flex between plywood skin and the leading each cap at the rabbit where the ply is glued and screwed. Not a big deal. We get the on yacht spars all the time, give it a little grind back with 36g resin disc, acetone wipe and reglass with 6oz E glass and West System epoxy, Peelply it, let it go off, rip the peelply off, sand it up and paint. Two hours work tops. Any questions Just ask, love your work by the way!

If you can boroscope the wing that may be the best way to inspect it. You may need to pull the fuel tanks out to inspect the spar and other wing structures. -Billy

Awesome little airplane! You should see if Garrett aka Cleetus might be interested in this plane. I think he said a P-51 is his dream plane, so this might be right up his alley.
If the wood wasn't sealed properly and was old, you'd have some concerns. I think it'll be pretty solid. Definitely get a detailed and thorough annual, fly it to Florida and decide after you fly it if you want to sell it.
All these negative comments about homebuilt aircraft and wood show a general ignorance and fear in the public which is why only a select few get to experience the thrill of playing in the clouds in something you built made from a natural material. Wood is a well proven and well respected material in aeronautics and can be tested, checked and maintained for many years in any climate. “Navy-on” that’s a first for me. I would say though wear a pilot pack when you maiden her…. Just in case - hope that gorgeous canopy can be jettisoned. Interestingly the Nah-vee-on is famously a descendant of the Mustang

Great videos as always Jimmy! Cool plane! My Grandpa had a PT-19 and 2 J-3's to instruct in. I think the Fairchild F24 also used that engine as well. He had to sell them all after a attack before I was old enough for him to teach me to fly. Hopefully I will learn before I'm too old. Can't shake that dream.
I used to work on wooden airframes, and that looks a solid build. I would have no problem flying that. Get an annual, as that will increase its value significantly if you did decide to sell it.
I couldn’t disagree with more than the previous commenter. Wood planes that have been stored indoors will remain as solid as the day it was built. All you need to do to check the planes wooden parts is to buy or borrow a digital moisture meter. If the wood is damaged or rotted, the moisture level will be high. I’ll bet that the meter tells you that the wood is solid and dry. The plane could use a paint job but otherwise it’s very cool Jimmy. I agree that you should sell it BUT, please get it going and take it for a spin first ok. Btw, I am a fan of wooden boats and have had several of them. Well maintained wooden boats last forever and that’s a hull that sits in the water for its entire life. Your wooden plane has maybe been rained on a few times but otherwise I’m 99% sure the wooden air frame is solid as a rock. Good luck either way my friend. 👍🇺🇸✌️
There is a miniature flying B17 too. Bally's Bomber. Really cool airplane, there are a bunch of videos of it around. Personally I have always wanted to build a miniature B-36 with 6 rotary engines to get the cowling shape correct. Have no idea when or if the mini B17 will ever be for sale, but how cool would that be to have both?
At 9:08 what are those metal tubes that join in a 6-way junction? Two of them are showing damage due to impact of some sort. There's lots of other planes out there and your great family needs you to stick around! Just my two cents for what it's worth.

I'd be very wary about homebuilt aircraft being made of wood, with too many questions, especially in the humid climate of Florida. I'd look hard at the Cessna 150 or the Navion. Keep up the good content
Hughes plane was made of (Duramold)a birch base lamination process. It did fly, but only a few hundred feet on a test taxi run But that's it. It was poorly under powered.(FYI) keep up the good work. 👍
Damn that's a BEAUTY =D Would have preferred if it was aluminum and maybe a bit more power. I bet it's solid though. Aircraft quality like marine quality wood. Have to fit certain standards.
Man Jimmy, I think you should get someone who knows about wooden airplanes and hopefully fly it home. This thing is seriously cool and I would really like to see more.
It’s really sad how many old airplanes are rotting like that Beechcraft and Cherokee. They’re just so expensive to maintain and fly, and triply so if you don’t stay on top of them. Once it sits for a year or two it becomes even more expensive to get it back in annual. Once I get my ppl I think I’ll stick to renting or a flying club until I’m independently wealthy lol.
In reality, if you purchase a Cessna 150 or Cherokee 140, you can get your PPL in those and then after building a bit of time, sell it and come out with money in your pocket above the original purchase price. Prices are increasing every day.
Don’t know much about history… don’t know much about geology…. But I do know that you love planes and what a wonderful Jimmy’s World it must be! 3:30 😂
12:38 you’re not going to like this idea, but it is an idea. You can get that plane on a trailer but you’re going to have to Lift the entire plane by the nose. Take off the propellers and anchor it by the engine. Custom trailer but it would work.
If you fly it home take a parachute with you with a homing beacon. We'd hate to lose you Jimmy. I don't trust it I know it flew but how long did it fly and Texas to Florida is a long time for a piece of furniture to be in the air.
Wood is great if stored and maintained correctly. Kermit Weeks' Mosquito Bomber, on display at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, has to be restored because the wood dried out from being in a too dry environment.
Back when we built our Glasair we knew of a couple guys who built all aluminum 3/4 scale P-51 mustangs.. this was back in the 90s.. i was never a fan of the smaller mustang myself as i didn't fit in it that well.. you little guys fit a lot better. i'd like to see you get it flying and back to florida.. grab you a handheld radio and go.. arrange a chase plane with similar performance so you have company and someone with you incase you have to set her down somewhere off field..
Jimmy, 🤔... The wings don't come off, However I'm sure the nose comes off along with the engine and the rudder... How long would it be if those came off? Would it be short enough if those were removed to stand it up vertical front side down on a low boy semi trailer? 😉... Oh, it's just a thought, even though it's a crazy one... Maybe just crazy enough to work... 🤪
Jimmy what you can do with the wings is hire a professional drummer that knows their Octaves and have them tap the wings for sound it'll find bad spots ,I've heard that drummers listen to the sound of cymbals and skin tones for the best sounds And they get hired to tap boats for wood rot Just a idea to try they can tell different forms of sound if the wings are solid ,Cool plane though
If only first flown in 2017 you can be fairly certain the wood very good it would have all be properly treated and will probably be still good in 50yrs Get an inspector to look it over / service fit a simple radio and fly it home you start messing about fitting panels and lights it will just be another excuse not to fly it, You don't fancy it then get someone else to fly it back for you. Lot a pilots out there would love to own that aeroplane
I wouldn’t worry too much about much about the wood. You’re in dry Texas and it looks like it’s hanger kept. A good going over with a good A&P mechanic and she would be fine.
The problem is if he does fly it back to Florida, then it's in a humid environment and how long will the wooden structure last before it becomes a sponge?
As an experimental he had to keep a builders log with photos to show to the FAA inspector. It should show every step ofnrhe build including wings before they were closed in. You should get that log with the plane.
If the wings don't come off then someone else buying it will have the same issue. Best to make it flyable for someone to buy, oh and hire a test pilot.
Do you know what sort of glue was used in the construction of the ply? It might have implications for any repairs you try to do. Personally I would sell it on to a wood worker.
I think you should trade with the jr dude and drive away into the sunset. Enjoy your content since you began. What could possibly go wrong? Live long and prosper.
That looks like a leading edge impact on the starboard wing. Glue joints could be broken. Very sketchy, definitely needs a expert to take a look. I'd drill a few holes to see how deep the damage is. Doesn't look good, the lead edge could be fractured. Other then that Its a cool model Plane!
Jimmy is this plane still in Texas? I thought when I watched your video you were somewhere down in the Medina Texas area... I used to live in Vanderpool I'm very familiar with wood airplanes if it's still here in Texas I could probably help you out.
Personally, enjoy your Lancaire and 310 content....and similar types of planes. Stuff like this is such a "one off" that it has very little appeal for me. As far as the Elvis jet......it is certainly entertaining....but I'll never really understand the plan there. I can't imagine that converted RV ever being safe and roadworthy.

Needs a 4 blade to look somewhat authentic....all good Jimmy
It’s really sad how many old airplanes are rotting like that Beechcraft and Cherokee. They’re just so expensive to maintain and fly, and triply so if you don’t stay on top of them. Once it sits for a year or two it becomes even more expensive to get it back in annual. Once I get my ppl I think I’ll stick to renting or a flying club until I’m independently wealthy lol.
Go for mechanic class too
In reality, if you purchase a Cessna 150 or Cherokee 140, you can get your PPL in those and then after building a bit of time, sell it and come out with money in your pocket above the original purchase price.
Haha, that’s pretty good.
@@goodnightmr5892 Height restriction would probalby be exceeded.
If you fly it home take a parachute with you with a homing beacon. We'd hate to lose you Jimmy. I don't trust it I know it flew but how long did it fly and Texas to Florida is a long time for a piece of furniture to be in the air.
agree with comments below that the Elvis thing is a diversion, we prefer you in real airplanes. Like this one!
Wooden planes are great - look at DH Mosquito - looking forward to seeing the P51 in the air
Wood is great if stored and maintained correctly. Kermit Weeks' Mosquito Bomber, on display at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, has to be restored because the wood dried out from being in a too dry environment.
Pro Investing Tip: You can never loose money taking a PROFIT. Toooooo many projects, sell it (if you can clear a profit)! !! !!!
I just bought a hummel ultracruiser today, and it's all broken too I know the feeling
This would be a good plane for Trever Jacob on the other hand.
Jimmy, if you paid over scrap price for the wooden replica P-51, you just lost money. There is no redemption.
I’d love seeing this plane fly. I hope you can find a way to keep it and make it work.
I thought you already had one of these??
Jimmy what you can do with the wings is hire a professional drummer that knows their Octaves and have them tap the wings for sound it'll find bad spots ,I've heard that drummers listen to the sound of cymbals and skin tones for the best sounds And they get hired to tap boats for wood rot Just a idea to try they can tell different forms of sound if the wings are solid ,Cool plane though
If only first flown in 2017 you can be fairly certain the wood very good it would have all be properly treated and will probably be still good in 50yrs
Get an inspector to look it over / service fit a simple radio and fly it home you start messing about fitting panels and lights it will just be another excuse not to fly it,
You don't fancy it then get someone else to fly it back for you. Lot a pilots out there would love to own that aeroplane
28:13 is JIMMY GETTIN A BARON ???
BARON JIMMY ???? woah... lol hahahahaha
It's just so cool. Jimmy
Thank you Jimmy for the video.
Buyer beware good luck with this plane great video thanks Jimmy
As an experimental he had to keep a builders log with photos to show to the FAA inspector. It should show every step ofnrhe build including wings before they were closed in.
You should get that log with the plane.
The same construction is used on Bellanca super viking don't think its an issue
Note; Aluminum aircraft can have extensive structurally compromising corrosion. Same for steel framed fuselages. .
It’s wood, inspect with a sound. Stronger than steel for the materials attached to the time.
Jimmy, I rarely comment on your channel but I've had a nasty feeling about that plane from beginning to end. Please sell it. Please sell it.
Jimmy great project airplane but if I it my plane I would sale and work on my other project.
Love to see that fly....make it happen....hi from the uk
If the wings don't come off then someone else buying it will have the same issue. Best to make it flyable for someone to buy, oh and hire a test pilot.
Those wooden wings with little way to inspect is a "just say no" moment .
Termite inspection?
😂😂😂
That looks like a leading edge impact on the starboard wing. Glue joints could be broken. Very sketchy, definitely needs a expert to take a look. I'd drill a few holes to see how deep the damage is. Doesn't look good, the lead edge could be fractured. Other then that Its a cool model Plane!
Hi Jimmy; I think you should concentrate on the ElvisMoBile and sell this one. Or skin the wings with alum. sheet or ??
Jimmy is this plane still in Texas? I thought when I watched your video you were somewhere down in the Medina Texas area... I used to live in Vanderpool I'm very familiar with wood airplanes if it's still here in Texas I could probably help you out.
Personally, enjoy your Lancaire and 310 content....and similar types of planes. Stuff like this is such a "one off" that it has very little appeal for me. As far as the Elvis jet......it is certainly entertaining....but I'll never really understand the plan there. I can't imagine that converted RV ever being safe and roadworthy.
Be careful! Those spiderwebs can pull you into the fuselage thru the smallest of spaces and you can never get out!
