The carburettor, jet and fuel feed pipes of a two-stroke engine which has not been run for some time will need cleaning thoroughly. And then it should run well.

Those are Squadron or Loehle (who took over the company in the 90s) biplanes. They were made out of Columbus Ohio starting in 1982. I used to work for the company. This one has been converted from the original design to a Jenny. They sold the SE-5, the Spad and the Fokker D7. Thanks.

Couple notes on the Jenny, the v-shaped piece is probably to deflect hot engine air away from the fuel tank. Also, motorcycle type carbs usually need the float bowl and jets cleaned if they have been sitting for a long time.

And not forgetting its a two stroke, so yes unless its run not very long ago the carbs are filled with tar.
Remove carbs take them apart and soak pieces in a gallon of parts cleaner for a few days.

SCREW DRIVER in your back pocket when you got in the airplane would cost you your job at most FBOs. My first employer as an A&P that was rule #1. He had a former employee that sat in a 6 place twin with custom leather interior. The screw driver in the back pocket put a hole in the seat. The leather could not be matched. The shop had to pay for down time and replacement of the whole interior with matching hides. $$$$$$$$
If you need to get out in a hurry, the screw driver stuck in the seat back could make it hard.

My aviation love began with a flight in an open cockpit “Waco” at the Paul Mantz air museum in the 1960’s. My mother always wanted to be a pilot so, she paid for a flight for me and my brother to do so. I came back (landed) with a love of aviation ever since. The was over sixty years ago and many license’s in aviation in the meantime.

You are doing great. I’m a private pilot undergoing instrument training right now. You’re so brave showing you’re process including all of the nerves. I firmly believe that your openness is giving strength to a lot of pilots in training. The strength that they need to keep going and pushing through the nerves. A CFI told me that I should expect to be nervous until I have about 300 hours. He told me that I would be stupid not to be. That helped me feel better about my process and better about myself and that alone brought me a lot of calmness in my current training. I have about 175 hours currently so only 125 to go before I’m not nervous. Lol😂. Keep the videos coming. I love them.

Jimmy, you were marveling at the short amount of time from Orville and Wilber's Wright Flyer's first flight to the Me 262... now take a quick look at the Avionics. I started flying in UH1's Huey's in 1988 with "Steam Gauges" and my most accurate Nav was a VOR and if we were lucky we'd have an ILS or Localizer
on board... When did the first GPS come out that was used in aircraft? and how fast that progressed. I can't imagine flying now without my Avidyne 540 and Aspen 2000Max to get me from A to Z with stops for that $100 Hamburger in between while looking for the best Fuel Price.

May want to clean pilot and main jet, clean out idle air jet, and check if fuel enrichment valve is properly functioning. If sitting for some time the fuel will evaporate leaving the 2 stroke oil that can gum up the carb. They are a simple design and easily rebuild able.
Looks like the Jenny would be exciting and scary at the same time to fly. Best wishes.

I am excited to hear you bought the Quickie. Couple years back, I we didn't know what was wrong with me, was having issues with my health. I have built and flown several model RC planes and quad drones. I took an Interest back then on the Quickie. I revisited my interest when I became sick, we wasn't sure what was wrong with me, and my design interests turned to a full sized home built plane. So I went over old plane designs, and home built designs. The Quickie had my interest because is was small, compact and fast for it's day. It was sold as a kit plane back in the 80's. They have a good top speed and from all accounts very stable. Something about the bi-wing design. The upper wing has a slight dihedral and the lowers was an inverted dihedral. Would love to go flying in one some day, but my dreams of ever becoming a pilot have been dashed. My health issues turned out to be bone marrow cancer, it causes me to be anemic, and the risk of hypoxia at higher altitudes, well let's say FAA and flight surgeons will never pass me for a license. So I my home built designs have stopped and my dream of a pilots license have been dashed. But I am glad to hear it started first time and hope you can fly her if she is air worthy, make a video so I can see one in air!

Carburetor reminds me of Kehin on a Honda I had decades ago. Don't try starting with the slide out. Uncontrolled RPM happens.

A small amount of oil in any fuel won't harm any other engine, usually when I start an engine that had not been run in years I put two stroke fuel in it to get oil on the cylinders and Rings instantly, won't hurt a regular engine at all

I'm just wondering why you don't use ether. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching you pull them over till the engine is warmed up. Tiny little plane, Have fun!

I like the pull string for starting. That's far safer than spinning the prop.
