Just in case nobody has mentioned it yet, the term "hair metal" is a term which was coined after the era had passed, and was intended to be derogatory. Back at the time this genre was popular it was referred to as "glam metal". It is something that evolved over time and drew from a lot of early influences, but I think the 3 bands that basically perfected it first and hit it really big were Motley Crue, Poison, and Ratt. They were of course followed by a lot of other bands they made contributions to the genre, but in terms of the first to define and had the most influence I'd say it was those 3.

As someone who grew up in during this time, this description is pretty much spot on, with the exception that we didn't really call it glam metal, just glam (or poser metal as a derogatory term). There were lots of 70s influences to the genre - Alice Cooper, KISS, New York Dolls, David Bowie, and Gary Glitter, to name a few. Because of the plethora of bands on the Sunset Strip and around LA at the time they needed a way to set themselves apart, and dressing up in wild costumes, using makeup, and having outrageous sets was the way they did it.

The problem with the question is the hair metal has never had a proper definition. It was just a label that music snobs and rock critics (but it repeat myself) used to deride music they didn't like without having to support their arguments that it wasn't good music. Some have suggested hair metal as putting more priority into the look of the band than the music. Ok, well, what about New York Dolls, then? Why isn't NYD a hair metal band instead of a punk band? If hair metal is just bands with long hair then why aren't the Beatles a hair band? The truth is that hair metal is a meaningless fucking term that we use a lot because others use it and really no one knows what it means.

GIrls Girls Girls tour: Did a 360 rotation like you saw in the video
Dr. Feelgood Tour: Lee went to a separate kit that went above the audience
Then there were the stunts that he did in latter tours
2011-2012 (or so): Kit was on a loop that went upside down, and Lee would even have a fan join him
2014-2015: The "Roller coaster" kit that went on a track over the audience, rotating. Just insane.

You could argue that Motley Crue was the first and most successful "hair metal" band, but the "Glam Rock" bands came before them which paved the way for this style. Robert Boyer
I know what you mean. I always thought that I would get killed in my 1971 Trans Am. That was the fastest car I ever had it had a 455 with a four speed transmission in it. The engine was bored out and had a big cam two and a half inch headers going into six inch collectors then the stock mufflers so it wasn't loud unless you punched it and the tires broke loose and started screaming even though it had 60 series tires on all four wheels. The speedometer went to 165 mph and once I had it close to being pegged but had to let off it because the front end of the car got really light and it felt almost like it was floating. It ended up getting hit by an older woman (66 years old) that ran a stop sign and hit me at my passenger side back wheel and twisted the body so bad that on the drivers side rear roof piller was wrinkled up. I was unhurt but by neck felt like maybe my neck muscles got a bit stretched a bit so I spent the night in the hospital for observation. That was the only time I was in a hospital until about three weeks ago when I spent 13 days in the hospital for spine fusion surgery and a tumor removed as much as they could because the tumor was wrapped around all those nerves that come around your tailbone. Unfortunately the tumor turned out to be stage 4 metastatic renal cell carcinoma both my kidneys have tumors as does my right lung and what is left on my lower spine. At least since my surgery I don't have the part of the tumor that was pressing against my sciatic nerve. For a little over three months I had the worst pain I've ever felt in my life staring in my tailbone then it would go over to my right butt cheek and down my hamstring. My back is healing well now. I probably don't have very many years left but I'm 63 years old and have had a good life and had a lot of good times. If fact there are a lot of my memories from the 70s and 80s that are a bit fuzzy if you know what I mean. Lol. So I'm just going live the rest of my life to the fullest. And not worry about things that I have no control over. The 70s and 80s rocked!

Touching on your thoughts of being there in the 80s, on the Sunset Strip... you're right. The sheer amount of talent in the room at any given time was phenomenal. And it was a party every night. Living in LA, you hear all the stories and get to relive a bit of it when you hit up some of the venues that made that time period what it was. Myself, I am also 40 going on 41. So I have seen my share of shows from alot of these bands. Motley Crue I have seen about 10 times. Best was 2011 at the famous Sunset Strip Music Festival. They literally shutdown a couple block section of the Strip for the show. Motley Crue came on right after Bush. Sun was setting. Flanked by legendary bars & venues: Rainbow Bar and Grill, The Roxy, The Whiskey, The Viper Room, The Key Club (at the time). Right down the street from the Crue's old apartment. It was a surreal moment. Almost like the ghosts of that decade of decadence came back to life to witness Motley Crue rock the Strip. A night I will never forget. And afterward, it was a madhouse. You had members of some of those bands partying with people, lines of people up and down the Strip waiting to get into places. Music everywhere. Tommy was in The Whiskey raising hell. It was a wild night. I remember running into this guy that said he hasn't seen the Strip that alive since 1989. Pretty cool. They were basically the most notorious band on the Strip at that time. If you get a chance, watch a video on here called "When Metal Ruled the World". It was an old VH1 documentary that talked about the debauchery of these bands during that time. Very interesting.

Ahh the 80's! Went to a lot of concerts, partied with the musicians. I didn't do heavy drugs but did my fair share of pot smoking and drinking and for a few years I lived life on the wild side! When you hung out with music makers back then you got sucked into all of it. It was a wild and crazy time. Would I do it again? Yes I would! I had so much fun. Once a headbanger, Always a headbanger!

I saw Mötley Crüe twice on the Shout At the Devil tour. Once with Ozzy and then on their own. Great show.
In regards to who started hair metal in Los Angeles it started with Van Halen in the mid to late 70's then they influenced Quiet Riot in the 70's and early 80's and Mötley Crüe in 80,81.
When Mötley came out in 81 no one was like them. You had Quiet Riot, Dokken, W.A.S.P. but everyone knew Mötley because at that time in L.A. no one looked like them- it was punk, glam/ hair metal, early speed metal and thrash as well as new wave all at the same time.
So Mötley Crüe didn't invent it but they were one of the first and they were more theatrical when they started with the leather, studs, chains and pyro. Borrowing from KISS, Aerosmith, New York Dolls, Alice Cooper and The Sex Pistols.
Ratt was more glam and poofy hair.
As far as how people " partied" in the 80's you are correct it was 24/7 365 dude. It wasn't just in L.A. where people "partied" it was everywhere. Very decadent indeed.

I helped set up the stage in 1987 and Gubs and Rose's opening. But would not test the drum set. Shocked they are all still alive . They did this song at sound check

I was 21, living in LA when this album came out. It was wild! Part of that was just being young but LA was :Rock Clubs, Strip Clubs, Concerts, Fast Cars and some drugs and alcohol. Damn, what a party!
