      For me I value flexibility the most, a zoom lens that goes from wide angle to super telephoto. You never know what you are going to come across while traveling and having that range of different focal lengths in one lens is amazing. With that sort of lens you never have to switch lenses also and are ready to film everything. Only downside of this sort of setup is that these lenses often have slower apertures (not a big deal if you are shooting full frame like yourself) so filming nighttime and lowlight can be challenging. I have the Panasonic GH5s which is pretty good at higher isos and the 12-100 Olympus F4 (24-200 full frame equivalent). That lens is amazing and even has very close, semi macro abilities. It has a constant aperture and the built in lens stabilization is clutch, 4.3 stops of stabilization in the lens (the camera has none). Basically the lens does everything and to call it a jack of all trades would be demeaning because it also has very good image quality at all focal lengths and no real optical flaws according to Lenstip. I will probably also take with me a go pro (mostly for some water or action shots) and a second prime lens with a fast aperture.

    Gear question:
    Hi, Im doing a thrue hike of the PCT next year walking/hiking from Mexico to Canada. It takes between 5-6 months.
    Im filming it. Will try to make my own documentary. I will have a friend at home that edites the videos. So, some gear below.
    I need to go as lightweight as possible, will intervju people on the way.
    So, this is the list right know (I haven't baught the camera yet, been borrowing friends and trying things out):
    Camera - Sony a7s M3
    Action camera/drone substitut - Insta360 ONE X2 with the invisible stick.
    Phone - Samsung s20
    Lenses - Sony FE 12-24mm F2.8 G Master Ultra Wide ( want to be able to capture the landscape but aslo do some astero filming/photo, all in one lens for nature).
    And the secund lens - Sony 40mm F2.5
    Light - Falcon Eyes F7 Mini
    Sound - Røde mic for the camera and a small bluetooth one to put on me giving me two mics. Haven't really narrowed it down fully.
    4 batteries for the Sony
    2 NITECORE 10k power bank (2 10k are lighter then 1 20k, that why. Will go some 8 days without civilisation at some points)
    Tripod... looking at the minimalist Pedco UlraPod 1 or 2. I can fix that to my trecking pole and put the camera on rocks and stuff.
    A bit Undecided on that one. But the nr1 are just 51g so extremly lightweight.
    Thats it, I need to get as mutch out of this as possible with the lowest possible weight...
    Best regards from Sweden
    Sorry for any spelling misstakes.

    I just wanted a small full frame camera with a 2.8 zoom lens. I use to travel with an APSC cam with f/1.4 primes and it was amazing, however after 1.5 years I found that I really liked zooms more so I switched to an apsc 2.8 zoom lens. Coming from 1.4 to 2.8 I really missed the low light and bokeh so I switched to a Sony a7C + Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 full frame which i'm in love with, Also it's smaller than my old APSC kit! Thanks for this - I've been going through the same process and come up with similar answers for myself & assistant (husband):
    A CAM = C70 (he's a 6' 3" gorilla and can carry it all day) with Speedbooster
    B CAM (& photo) - EOS R with straight and variable ND adaptors
    Lenses: Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS EF-S, 35mm IS f2, 50mm f1.4, (plus wildcard = 10-18mm f4-5.6)
    Mics: Rode Wireless Go II & Video Micro
    Lights: 2 x Aputure AL-F7
    Action: GoPro 10
    Tripod: BeFree Travel
    I'm soooooo want to take the 70-200mm f2.8L IS but it's a huge beast and we will mainly be travelling by bicycle up the east coast of Australia and then 3 months around Japan so it's a luxury that probably won't make the cut.

  • @Flugabenteuer
    @Flugabenteuer 3 года назад +2

    Hi Mark, finally a video which addresses traveling needs, great! Maybe you can give me an advice from your experience. As a hobby I make flight videos and shoot them in 4k mainly with GoPros because of the small size, weight and amazing stabilization. However sometimes I also make handheld landscape shots (+ photos) and vlogging at the destinations. So I am looking for a light weight camera which has the best possible stabilization (like with the GoPros) because in the aircraft it can be very shaky but I can’t use a gimbal in the cockpit because of the size and weight. Also a fast autofocus would be good.
    Up to now I used a Sony AX53 camcorder for filming and the iPhone 11pro for photos. But I am not happy with the quality I am obsessed with quality (I used to make photos with a full frame EOS 5D II but the cockpit is to small for 2 big cameras) so I want to replace the camcorder with a camera which can film and make better photos than the iPhone. What would you use when money is no object and what if the budget is medium? (like in your video the R5/GH5 or other like Sony...?) Sorry for the long explanation 🙈

    • @MarkHarrison4
      @MarkHarrison4  3 года назад +2

    • @ImaginetMedia
      @ImaginetMedia 3 года назад +1

      @@MarkHarrison4 I am looking forward to your next video. I am sure it will be much better. Shooting LOG is very difficult in poor lighting, which is compounded if the exposure is not spot on. Personally, I do not see any advantage to shoot LOG for this type of video. Your others are excellent as they are. Simplify things and shoot a Natural profile with a few weeks and you will greatly reduce your time in post and end up with a superior product.
