First of, love your reviews...The price is just way too much for a saloon car at near on £60K...I am just stunned at how prices of cars have ballooned to such heights, and I know that inflation and other factors are hitting us, but deep down I just get the feeling we are being screwed/crushed at every turn from simple household shopping, energy like gas and electric all the way through to larger cost items like cars.. Sorry about the rant...

I'm sure this is down to consumers' increasing acceptance of the ever popular PCP / leasing / financing options. People are happily fooled into thinking they're able to afford purchasing a shiny new car when they're effectively renting them. And the financing companies / car manufacturers are happy to cash upon this new revenue stream.

They're massively more expensive than they need to be - just look at the criminal prices of headlamps now. Just why? The simple bulb lamps in my old Fiat light the road just as well (possibly better) than the fancy LED ones in my Jaguar which are like an overly focused torch and have zero 'peripheral vision' in the light. Bulb cost to replace: £4, lamp unit in Jag: £1500+

I sat in an ID.7 on Wednesday. Unfortunately I didn’t get to drive it, but I did play with the infotainment. Completely agree it is night and day better than the early cars, materials are so much nicer, and it finally(!) has battery preconditioning.
The launch edition is still too expensive, but it will clearly get discounted thanks to the ZEV mandate. A Pro S estate will be the one to have IMHO.

It may do 300 or 400 miles in summer just with the driver and a steady motorway speed below the legal limit but add a couple of passenger, luggage and the long trip for say a holiday down the motorway may eat into that range figure significantly. Add on the country roads with start, stops, braking and accelerating and the range gets hit again. So it would be interesting to see a real life test of that!

The generation with solid state batteries, stuff that will charge in 10 minutes and hold a range of 400+ miles, or less and be lighter / cheaper. It'll be an interesting space from 2025 thru 2030 for sure. Personally for me my eNiro (with it's built in heat pump) is more than enough for everything I do, but I appreciate there's the odd person who wants more and everybody wants a lower screen-price. btw - an aside, eNiros like mine can be had second hand for £16k now - a total steal for a very rounded car. OK, with regards to the charging network being in the satnav. You know that's already part of all ID cars? I have a MY22 ID3 with v3.2 software, and am able to plot a route to the South of France if need be and not have to touch ZapMap or ABRP. Have none of the motoring journalists actually seen the current V3.2+ software on the ID models? While the interface is slightly different and admittedly not as quick, my MY22 ID3 is able to do everything with regards to routing as is seen in this video. I'm able to see all chargers in the satnav with live updates. I'm able to only choose chargers with more than x stalls if need be. I'm able to filter by 50Kw or more if need be. I'm also able to see all charger statuses within the map area even if I'm not navigating anywhere
I recently drove from Macclesfield to Ilford. After 30 mins of driving the satnav announced I could make the journey with no charging (thank you Pennines!) after initially thinking I'd need to charge, so removed charging from the route. Automatically.
Conversely, on the reverse journey, the weather was atrocious. The satnav automatically sensed I was using more energy and started routing me to closer chargers.
My point is, this already happens in ID cars and it's frustrating to see journos missing this.
By the way, excellent video as always. I really want an ID7 but I'm happy with my ID3 :-)

As they advise you should only charge the battery up to 80% I think they should also advise the range accordingly. In other words whatever they say first knock off that 20% and then another 10% for lights, wipers, air-con etc and even that will depend on the weather as the battery will lose charge if it is too cold or too hot.

It's the same old problem with charging. It's not a case of having to wait 15 minutes to charge to 80% or less, the anxiety comes with not being able to GUARANTEE the charging station is not only working but able to charge at the fullest rate and the other thing is guaranteeing that it's actually working when you get there and not broken or the payment system is down or needs a specific phone app etc etc. That's why hybrid cars are currently the only option right now. Another good balanced video Ped, however for me another big miss from VW I’m afraid. £60k is an outrageous cost for an EV with options including £7k for a sunroof and a bit of stying is obscene! A heat pump should be standard and not a £1k option. I can’t see who is going to pay list for this and after the launch hype it will be heavily discounted by dealers. You can get a year old Model Y LR for £36k - £40k which still is in my opinion a far superior car to this with (looks aside), better tech, practicality and range. Given past EV products from the VW group, I suspect the ID7 won’t get anywhere near it’s quoted range. Being generous, the ID7 will be a £32k car after a year, which may present a better proposition. It’s good to see the incorporation of charging stations in the sat nav but the new HMI looks like a stuck on cheap ipad. It will look dated very quickly. I think with more competition in the market now from BYD and others VW really do need to price their vehicles much more competitively. Cost of living crisis aside, the public are much better informed and are not cash cow fools and will not fall for the hype around this and other similarly specced priced EV,s. With Tesla missing it’s last earnings forecast and BYD having a lot of scope to reduce prices due to low manufacturing costs and the general poor uptake of new EV,s by the non company car driving public I can see VW,s competitors reducing list prices again this year. This will be a good thing for the consumer and hopefully a bit of a wake up call for VW!
