id like to do this one day. Dont have the money to get the rest of the guns and all the leather at the moment but i just ordered a taylor and co SAA outlaw legacy black and blued with white grips in .357. Cant wait to get my hands on it in a few days. I love the cowboy guns and would love to get into this sport someday.
I hate these videos- so of course RUclips feeds them to me. I don't hate them because I'm anti-gun... I am a firearms advocate. I don't hate them because I dislike competition, I shot IDPA before most people knew that it existed. I don't hate it because I don't like the theme- I love the old west! I hate the videos because eventually they're going to cost me a boat load of money. I own several guns. But every single one of them is here because I believe it will help me keep myself and my family safe. I don't hunt, I don't collect. Guns exist to keep bad guys from doing bad things- at least in my life. And if course a 357 revolver and carbine and a 12 gauge can do that, there are better options. But dangit, this just looks like so much fun. Maybe I should start looking for good deals. If it is cheap enough I can claim it's an investment rather than a gun purchase!
Thanks for doing this. I'm just about to go to my local club now that I finally have my 4th gun and have made a holster. I made Shotshell holders for 6 shells because I only ever saw 4 shot in a match, and I wanted an extra. But I see that you're holds 8. Do I need to add on 2 more?
6 ought to serve you well. Every now and then we'd have a shotgun-only stage, and need like 10, so I'd just tuck two into my belt and grab those first. It won't come up very often.
Hey nice video, best intro to what equipment you need to get started that I have seen. Thanks for doing it! How about a Ruger Blackhawk, is that an allowable gun or is that like the Henry, close but not quite it?
Revolvers with adjustable sights such as the Ruger Blackhawk are SASS-Legal, assuming its not chambered in .30 Carbine which is not a legal cartridge. There are some categories that require a fixed sight revolver but the vast majority of shooters are in the "open age" category or in age-based categories where the Blackhawks would be welcome. Also the Henry Big Boy is, and has been for many years, a SASS-legal rifle. There is only one category in which it is not allowed. No club that follows SASS rules has a reason NOT to allow it.
@@abee.s.corpus2455 Sorry to bother you, but you seem to know the rules. Regarding Double barrel shotguns, can you use the type that ejects the shells upon breaking open the shotgun? I would assume not, I just happen to have a Browning already. Also is the use of Winchester 94's in pistol calibers allowed? Thanks for your time-Mike
@@sixdollarman1362 a double barrel shotgun may have extractors that lift the hulls from the chambers but not ejectors that throw the hulls out of the action. Many people don’t grasp the difference. A Winchester 1894 in a pistol caliber is legal. Winchester made those rifles for cowboy action. Sometimes they can be temperamental. The 1894 was designed for longer rifle cartridges. If you already own one, bring it.
It's a pretty steep initial investment. I started with the cheapest guns I could find, and it was still around 2k. I shot with guys who had an easy 8k in theirs. And yeah, there's no telling how much I dropped on costuming.😆
I've always wondered if there was a 'filthy casual' single-action shooting league/club/whatnot for people that want to engage in the sport, but less so the exacting equipment requirements and cosplay
We don’t really “cosplay”. Throw on some jeans and a long sleeve shirt and some sort of leather shoe or boot and you’ve met the costuming requirements. If you don’t have guns, show up with ammo.
@@calebnation6155 you are reading the requirements for one of the very restrictive “costume based categories”. Those rules don’t apply to the 90 percent of shooters who are in other categories.
@calebnation6155 Then I suggest you read the 2023 rule book. Athletic shoes and combat boots ARE banned no matter what material they are made from. But lace up leather shoes and boots without lug soles would be appropriate for some townspeople personas and are NOT banned.
Thanks for the info! Gonna be a few years before I can afford to get into the sport no doubt, and not sure how well I'll be able to manage that with a trucking career, but definitely good to know. Regarding shotguns, I know that some clubs accept Winchester 1887 reproductions, but that they're pretty rare to see. Is that just because of preference/affordability/availability, or is it that only some clubs are good with them?
so they probably wouldn't be super happy if you show up with a tactical lever gun a pair of magnum research bfr's and one of those stoger tacticool double barrels? dang, maybe you could get away with a doc brown looking lever gun like in back to the future 3
From what I've seen of shooting vids is you also need a broken back. The stance they have is all laid back slanted like they are having a spasm. No standing straight up firing with the winner who pulls first and fastest, it's all about welding the holster to your leg and just leveraging it. Why no clear draw and shoot?
Most clubs shoot six stages in a monthly match. Most stages are 10 rifle, 10 pistol and 4 shotgun so that's a total of 60 rifle, 60 pistol and 24 shotgun.
Yeah, they've added even more subcategories since I was active. Wild Bunch was brand new back then, and nobody was even sure exactly how it was supposed to work. 😆
Wild Bunch is a separate shooting discipline with its own rules on firearms. There are some other rule differences. Cowboy Action Shooting and Wild Bunch Action Shooting are both under the Single Action Shooting Society. Wild Bunch is not a "category" of cowboy action shooting. Some local clubs may approach it differently at monthly matches.
Great video, but... Huh. Lot's of Double Actions revolvers are period-correct.. Most of the gun-leather is 20th C. fantasy stuff. They allow Ruger Vaqueros which are only superficially similar to Colt 1873s. I mean, seriously they are doing 'Hollywood Western Cosplay,' excluding stuff that really existed and promoting the use of stuff that didn't. That being the case it's weird that they'd draw he line at Henry rifles.
Well, it's "Single Action Shooting Society", so... 😆 but yeah, it's kinda picked and chosen by the founders. Vaqueros are accepted because even though they have modern engineering they're still *mostly* patterned (visually) off of a SAA Colt. The modern production Henry rifle aren't. Also, up until recently they have the muzzle-end loading thing, which is a pain in the ass at the loading table. The 1860s do, too, but at least they're an actual reproduction.
The current American made Henry rifle ARE legal (per sass rules). What new shooters will find out (me included) find out that the modern Henry is not able to run as fast as the rifles we use, and cannot withstand the rigors of how we shoot. Great video otherwise!

The Henry Big Boy is specifically listed as allowed in the SASS Rulebook.

Are all the events "three gun"? Are there no pistol or rifle matches? That makes for a pretty steep initial investment with leather and costume.

Way heavier as well.
Just not a choice for many
Do you know what thickness of the leather is? I’m a holster maker and I like the thickness of the holsters it looks like make a 12-15 oz leather
Forgot to mention eye protection and hearing protection the club should have some but might not
I sorta figured that was a given, but you're right, I should have mentioned it. Especially since you need ear pro that works with a cowboy hat. 🤠

Can you use a Winchester model 1892 rifle?
Yes. The Brazilian replica of the '92 is the most affordable rifle.
Are ear muffs possible while wearing a stetson? What type of ear pro tends to get used in CAS?
Foamies, or the higher end molded active ears. Matches are all outside, and all pistol caliber, so they aren't too bad.
Actually, it does NOT have to be a “cowboy hat”; but, can NOT be a baseball cap!
Link or names of the equipment shown?
Belt is Galco, the holsters and shell holder were made by an older fella who passed away a few years ago. Check out Hellhound leather, though.
Can you use a Marlin 1894? Is 20 gauge ok in the coach gun?
Yes, and yes. 😁
How much ammo do you need
I usually brought 100 rounds rifle, 100 pistol, 50 shotgun for each match. You may not use it all, but it's always better to have a little extra.
