Land Rover Series 3 Restoration - Wing Repairs & Installing Hazard Lights Pt. 34

  • In this episode I fix the wings to the body for the last time. But first, I have to repair the corroded brackets which connect the new mud shields to the underside of the wings. Once that is done I move onto the electrics; I have to install a set of hazard lights to comply with the German road test certificate (TUV).
It's worth mentioning that the hazard switch I bought on ebay.co.uk (which is clearly marketed as a hazard light switch) is not actually designed correctly for the job. I had to modify it by soldering an additional terminal to the back, but even then the light within the fitting flashes when I use the turn signals. So, beware if you are doing the same thing to your car!
As ever, I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for your support.

That hole in the binnacle where you mounted the switch is the low-fuel warning light on my 1983 S3. I was stunned to discover I had that luxury feature, but its in the Haynes manual so must have been standard. No idea if it works though, its never been lit in ten years...

Barry Rowlingson now that is interesting. I will check the wiring loom. Would be useful.

@@My911 I just had a thought... When a diesel runs out of fuel you have to go through the messy business of re-priming the pump, whereas an empty petrol engine can sort itself out from empty. So maybe no need to have a low fuel warning light on a petrol model - just keep an eye on the gauge? Some chatter on the internet seems to confirm that petrol S3 LRs didn't have a low fuel warning light - only diesels did. Mine's a diesel.

Barry Rowlingson OK, thanks. That seems logical.

@@BarryRowlingsonBaz Yeah only diesels had the warning light, for reason you thought.

@@thejamesieboy Got mine back from the mechanics the other day and the fuel gauge wasn't working at all. Looked under the seat and I've got a "petrol model" sender with only one output terminal, and the garage had only connected the low fuel light cable, leaving the other wire hanging! Its going back to that mechanic for them to fixup some other more serious mistakes soon...

In germany we don't say hazard lights, we say "Parkberechtigungsleuchte" and I think that's beautiful ;)

Haven't fitted my sh mudshields yet but heard a good tip. Put bolts through foot wells with nuts outside then fitshields over these " studs" then hold shields on with another nut. So there's a gap between the two metal plates which a rot trap. Seems like a good idea.

Yes, I modified the attachment of the mudshields to have 10mm thick plastic spacers between the footwell and the mudshield. As the bulkhead is a well known rust-trap, it will hopefully stop the accumulation of all sorts of leaves/ mud / water from above causing instant rust! LR designers obviously built in obsolescence.....

Hi, thank you. I know what you mean. I wish I had never sold my 205 GTi...
BUT, it’s never too late. There are some great projects out there to be had. Just need the time and some money. If I can get hold of one for reasonable money, I would do a 109 project next. I have always wanted one. They drive so differently to the 88. And of course more practical. You should try and track yours down to see if you could buy it back.

Hi, I just checked the reg against the DVLA website and it is still out there but hasn’t been taxed since November 2006. Blue 2.25 diesel. A new log book was issued in the same month, just two weeks after the Road Tax ran out.

I think Paddock's need to check some of their tooling, or sack the quality control inspector, where not talking boeing air craft quality here but there's room for improvement.
