    If you are able to take an anatomy and physiology class somewhere, DO IT! It helps so much with retention of proportion and locations of major muscle and bones in the body. Comparative anatomy for animals (real of fantastical) just stretches those locations and proportions. Taxidermy is another great skill transfer. Keep at it Bill!!!

    so ... Monster clay can be re-used after molding ? I mean you don't really bake it like a normal clay and it's not really drying so ... when you've finished your mold you can juste destory your piece, keep the clay and using it again on another project ? Right ?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 лет назад +8

      That is correct! Since it's waxed based it will never dry out, only harden a bit. You can reheat it and get it back to a working or even completely liquid state, make something again, and destroy/reuse it again!

    • @Cullens_Workshop
      @Cullens_Workshop 5 лет назад +12

      Yep! I've known guys who've had the same clay for over 15 years.
      I do recommend covering any sculpt with a trash bag when you're not working on it. it helps keep the pet hair out!
      When all done with a sculpt I put all the caly into a crockpot on low then let it get to a liquid state and filter it through a wire strainer. This will help you filter out any stuff like silicone, plasti paste, fiberglass resin, or pet hair. Then I pour the liquid clay into different containers like silicone meatloaf, brownie trays and wrap the cooled clay in aluminum foil. that way i have a variety of chunks of clay ready for for all kinds of projects.

    Actually quite a few people (especially those near forests or highways) have collections of skulls and other bones. In America, quite a few are coyotes and small mammals, but hunters obviously can get their hands on things like deer and bear more easily.
    Not only are they great resources for anatomy and science, but the physical pieces can also be sources for aesthetic and inspiration.

    Is it possible to use a regular foam wig head or something similar to sculpt onto? Or would that definitly stick to the styrofoam while pulling the sculpt off..? Maybe there is something I could seal the styrofoam with so the clay and mold will come off?

    • @punishedprops

    put the staples in and take them off so that you can put real ones on the final object

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 лет назад +2

      That's certainly an option for you if you want to put the effort in! Bill decided to have the staples be part of the mold so that nothing would come through on the inside of the mask to cause discomfort. It's also going to be much simpler to reproduce the masks without having to manually add staples every time one is cast.

It's really excellent for long term sculpting projects, like full body applications that you see in the film industry!

      @@punishedprops do you think I can do a resin cast after molding and use that for future use too. Like a full resin cast filling the whole mold so I have something to have as backup. And I've been considering the apoxie route.

    Is Monster Clay reusable? Can't wait to see video of these being molded and cast :)

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  5 лет назад

      Yes it is! It's wax-based, so it won't ever dry out. It'll harden when cool (much like candle wax) and can be reheated and softened to be reused.

    So I’m just starting with sculpting/drawing different things, any tips to get better or make it look realistic?

    • @loganboomgaarden492
      @loganboomgaarden492 5 лет назад

      I’ve been drawing eyes for a while and I’ve gotten really good with them, but I am unfamiliar with pretty much all sculpting, and drawing different body types. Mostly I draw disproportionately and it just looks odd.

      It just takes practice. Drawing and sculpting from life will be your best teacher! Practice drawing or sculpting what you see, a little bit every day, and you will improve.

    So I have a few ideas.
    First is still the Roger Janitor character. I wanted to make a pull over head mask that you can pull down the skin from the top and be "blind". Also the arm mechanics.
    Second is a witch doctor mask, like a skull of a vulture or raven. If you guys have any tips or ideas, please let me know!!!

    Well, it seems my butt and my Bwonsamdi project was partially saved with this goodness (partially sadly 'cause I don't think I can afford all the materials and tools). Regardless, great video, and thank you sooo much for making it!

    • @punishedprops

      All you really need is the clay and your hands! You can make do with a cheap foam wig head that you layer tape and tin foil over to make it a more realistic proportion in lieu of an Ed Head! Sculpting tools can be bought cheap in small kits from stores like Michaels, and you can add nicer tools to your repertoire over time - no need to have it all right this second!

    I bought 5 lbs of Plastilina modeling clay from michaels because its super cheap. I love masks, I've had an ineterest in them for a very long time but have never really worked up the courage to make several for myself and so am nervous starting to try now. I'm thinking of trying the monster clay, as I hear its pretty popular for the few videos I've seen where its used but is pretty expensive. But is it really so different from the plastalina I've used? Because the stuff is fairly stiff after the few seconds of being heated, and I'm look to find something thats more like ceramic clay as that's something I'm really familiar with but cannot unfortunately make masks out of due to various reasons.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  5 лет назад

      It really just comes down to trying different clays and seeing what you like working with the best. While Monster clay might cost a little more than Plastalina in some cases, it's reusable and a single tub will last years, so it pays for itself.

    what about a hot plate? or a cup warmer if you don't have it.
    do elephant skull mask.

      The hot plate I own would burn the clay instantly. It's so damn hot. Anything warm will work, I usually prop the clay in front of my woodstove. But I LOVE that oven that guy made. I am going to copy cat him.

    How do remove the mask from the bust? Just peel it off?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 лет назад +1

      Once you're done sculpting you'll want to mold the mask while it's still on the bust. You'll see how Bill and Nick do this in the next video! After you've made your mold, simply lightly heat your Monster clay to make it soft and gouge it off the bust with your fingers. The clay can be put back into the container to be reused later!
