This is amazing! i've been looking for a kiwi flight reviewer as a Kiwi Aviation Enthusiast, I used to fly a lot when i was younger but mostly just Auckland-Wellington, Auckland-Queenstown, Wellington-Christurch etc, so i was never able to fly on a Q-300 only once which i dont remember. so it's nice that i can finally see what traveling truly domestic is like as we would most drive around NZ, keep making these they're great!
Thank you so much, that's very kind of you. Yes, when I was young we always drove as well, but now I fortunate that I get to fly quite a bit - although it's slowed up a lot since Covid, I was somewhere most weeks before the pandemic, now I'm only flying about once a month. But given how long it take me to make these, that's probably enough to keep me busy making reviews! I'm so glad you enjoyed watching this one - I have about 30-40 reviews out now, hopefully you'll enjoy some of the others as well (that's my cheap plug to try and get you to help boost my view stats, haha).
These are all great videos. If anyone from overseas didn't know what "kiwi deadpan" was - this is it! Please keep them coming, from a frequent flyer from ChCh.
Awesome, thanks! Those info boxes take yonks to get the data for - checking tail numbers, looking up flight histories, double checking routes - and I wasn’t sure anyone noticed or cared until now! But now that I know I’ll make sure I keep on doing it. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment, and double thanks for the sub, I really appreciate it!
Yay!!! You got my old town of Temuka. Where did you go skiing? Dobson?? The prep call for landing way back up at Kaikoura? Very advance notice lol. Pity it was a crap day for flying….great routing for amazing views on a fine day. 7/10 for water is an improvement. Maybe ask for diet water on your next trip and see how that goes ;) Keep ‘em coming!!
Hutt. I broke my leg on the first day, then I caught covid - not my best holiday, haha. Nah, the landing announcement was 20 minutes out, but I didn’t have enough approach footage to have over it so I distorted reality just a teeny bit. People are pretty good at picking up when I get stuff a little bit out, it’s pretty awesome to have subscribers who are that engaged.
Fun fact. Timaru is the home of British pavements, the original name of Fulton Hogan. Even funner fact: Timaru and Kaitaia were the last two regional airports to be sealed. The Timaru airport waiting/checkin area has the name of every peak xas you look out the window etched on them. Great idea
That is all very interesting - I've seen the mountain overlay on the windows, now I feel like I should have captured it and put it in the video! Very interesting about the Timaru and Kaitaia runways - thanks for sharing, and thanks for watching!
Hahaha - that's why my watch time stats have been looking so great - it's you rewatching everything! Well, thanks, I really appreciate it! I keep promising myself that I'll get more videos out, but the process just takes time, and I think I get a better quality video when I take the time to futz with them for a while.
Thanks so much! I was a bit bouncy, but not white knuckles, and we got into TIU, so it all ended well! Happy New Year to you as well, I hope it delivers something approaching a 'normal' year!
Awesome, thank you! Fair warning, I feel like my process has evolved over time, and my videos are getting better as I go - so if you're watching in reverse order they might feel like they're getting worse and worse!
Hahaha - We have family near Timaru so go to Hutt from there, sometimes Dobson. The dog swishes the double blacks better than me and shreds up a storm on the halfpipe. I gave the water a 7 - I know, why? - it's almost like I make it all up as I go along, haha. Thanks so much for watching, and for taking the time to leave a comment, and bonus points for giving me a chuckle while reading through the comments!
PMR can get windy when the sea breeze rolls across the plain - at least you get off the ground faster and climb quicker when it's windy! Thanks again for watching my videos!
@@zf5167 Oh, sweet. I did my written a few decades ago when I lived in the US, and did a few flights with an instructor, but couldn’t afford to get my hours.
Yes. I can only review what I get, and for quite a while it’s been a biscuit. I had one flight around September 2022 that had a bag of popcorn - that seemed slightly more substantial, but I wasn’t filming that day so couldn’t review it :( I mean, it’s only an hour, so it’s manageable with just a cup of tea and a biscuit, although there’s not a lot of food options near Timaru airport. The dilemma becomes more complex the more I think about it…
Always awesome to be able to watch your flight reviews, of all your travels!., thank goodness for Jetstar being around on some flight routes around NZ. To help keep air fare's down otherwise we'd be paying alot more on Air New Zealand say from ChcAuckland. Keep up the good work there dude✈👍 Do you know how much it co$t to re-seal the main runway at Timaru Airport??
Hi! Thanks for another positive comment, I really appreciate it. I don’t know what the resealing cost, but the Alexandra airport 1200x30m runway resealing cost $930,000 - www.codc.govt.nz/your-council/news?item=id:2mcjuyebq17q9s02a55n and the Timaru runway is 1130x90m, so I guess somewhere between $2.5m and $3m?
Yes, it was a bumpy one! The image stabilisation in the cameras makes it look much smoother that it actually was, but you can see the wing tip moving around a bit. It was one of those days when everything was running late due to weather, but we got there, which was a great outcome.
You are correct. There’s a risk that if you’re fiddling with a device that either you’ll be distracted and leave the designated path, or worse will drop it and the lithium battery with split and ignite (which is also why if you drop your phone onboard you shouldn’t adjust your seat and should ask the crew to get it out for you). You haven’t said, but are you referring to my footage from the tarmac while walking to and from the plane? I’m not actively filming, the camera is clipped to my belt and running blind, which is why it’s so heavily edited - most of the footage is terrible! And on some regional flights there’s no boarding or disembarking shots as it completely fails to work. In my mind this is the same as using a boarding pass on your phone - the phone is on, and in your hand, but you’re not using it. You’ve got me wondering now though, I’ll check the regulations and see if there’s anything more specific
Just following up, the only more detailed wording on this is on the Air New Zealand site: “If you're walking across the tarmac, your devices may remain powered on but must not be used. It's a potentially hazardous area and we need your full attention.” (From www.airnewzealand.com.au/electronic-equipment), which is in line with what I’m doing. If you have more information I’d really like to know, as I put a lot of effort into my videos and I would hate to do anything that wasn’t allowed.
Oh, I am usually super pedantic about that, making sure I have an external shot of the aircraft, and double checking on Flightera. But maybe this was NEU??? How did I get that wrong???
I just had a frustrating bag drop on a WF flight. When they work they’re amazing, but when they don’t there often aren’t enough agent to manage, and suddenly it’s chaos! Chaos makes excellent reviews, but it isn’t great for the blood pressure! There’s a good kiosk malfunction moment in the Air NZ MEL-WGN review as well. Thanks for watching, hope you’re enjoying the channel.
I’m always so worried that I’m rambling and making reviews that are too long - being told that one is too short is hard to believe! I’m 100% taking that compliment, thanks!

Electronic devices should not be used on the tarmac. There is terminal signage and PA's made both in the terminal and on board stating this.
