  • Why is Costa Rica's forest system so strong? We took on the task of investigating and looking for one of the reasons why Costa Rica stands out in terms of conservation. Also, our Technical Director, Lynx Guimond and his team tells us about the progress of Ceiba's construction during this first semester. On the other side, the AstilleroVerde team explains the reforestation strategy used for this year and more!

Over fifty years ago as a young teenage boy I dreamed of the day sailing ships would once again rise to take their place amongst the worlds merchant fleet. Discussing the Idea with older friends in the sailing community I would often be laughed at and probably rightly so, at the time, there would have been a very limited niche for such ventures to compete economically against oil powered vessels . Whilst everyone knew the oil would run out one day, most thought it would be at least two to three hundred years into the future. How times have changed, containerization, fuel prices, rise of the Easts industrial output and the decline of the western industrial machine, climate change and politics, alongside a massive growth in international trade and populations. Resources due to mismanagement and greed sadly have much declined. So I find it heart warming to see efforts like sailcargo working to make a difference. Only time will tell if their ideas will work, but I wish them all the luck in the world.

    Great works. Sustainable cleaner future.
Wil have to re-watch after the subtitles get generated. My Spanish is limited.
To people complaining about sailing time over container vessels, there's a year backup waiting off of LA in California, so Ceiba would win is style.

Excellent video, the attention this project brings to the impact consumers have on our environment is crucial. We all have daily choices in what we consume and where it comes from. Support your local producers and be willing to support sustainable shipping of goods not available locally. Purchasing coffee from Costa Rica directly from local farmer co-ops shipped sustainability is well worth the cost. You get what you're willing to pay for.

A very interesting and informative video, as an ex seafarer I support the work entirely, but whilst having spent most of my working life in steam and motor vessels I have done a small amount of time in sailing vessels (sail was not considered viable in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's). I do find from memories that some things may end up becoming different to the modern ideas - look back occasionally please - Nature does not change and things where done that way many times because it was and still is the only way to do it!
Another thing I find is that having traded to and from Costa Rica in the 70's the idea of needing to renew the forrests of Costa Rica is hadr to believe but it does show how bad things have become!

I wonder if the logistics of docking on decks that are already set up with cranes and ramps design to receive the current cargo ships, will be able to accommodate and unload CEIBA and its cargo.

They may be able to use smaller SI palletised loaded container units....effectively sub divisions of the larger containers. The Smallest is about the size of a wheel barrow bucket but a regular shape for stacking and handling
      In warehouses.

Costarica, Brazil and other coastal forest rich communities should develope their own local and internationally recognised areas of boat and ship building and restoration excellence on a par with areas like Maine, San Francisco Brittany in France and Plymouth and the Solent in the UK...but in a greener way..
An early system was developed in the UK called the Bradford Hutt system .. clear felling areas is a disaster you know this.. teaching children to be foresters and how to grow food and harvest trees from the same land is vital to their future and everyone's benifit.
Using and integrating the protection of the Forest by selective mixed age, mixed species harvesting of individual trees within forested areas so that the forrest floor is constantly protected and regenerating supports more wildlife and constantly provides a range of foods, materials and the different types of timber required for the communities servicing the different trades and wider communities ..
Sustainable Forestry for sustainable communities centering on boat building and high quality repairs.👍🏼 💙⛵💙🧙‍♂️
Teach the children how to make small boats ..that they can lean the skills of building and sailing
    at an early age.
Encourage local young people to become involved and reach out to the old shipbuilders see if you can exchange experience and skills and ideas from these maritime global cultural heritage sites. They are by their very nature enthusiasts .... linked by their passion for boats and the wood.

love what you are for and think that sustainability needs to be part of everything we do. The sad truth is the industrialized world has far outpaced these types of ships. Giant freighters carrying massive amounts of goods is what the technology beast has fed upon and its apatite is far more than ships like these could sustain. For every pound a sustainable ship can carry, there are millions shipped with fossil fuel. I don't think these forests could support the mass number of ships it would require to make even a dent in the shipping load of the world.
